Greatest video game villain...

The Land of the Enemy
21-07-2004, 21:46
My nerdy friends and I have been having a debate lately about who the greatest video game villain of all time. The majority of the group chose Sephiroth of FF VII as the greatest. Other leading contenders in the group were Bowser from the Super Mario series and Ganon of the Legend of Zelda series.

I have not yet made up my mind on this matter, but I am thus far leaning towards Sephiroth. I do like the idea of a villain as a guy who just wants to blow up the world out of spite and the quest for power. Not to mention he's got an awsome ginormous sword.

I'd like to hear from you out there on who you think should be titled the greatest.

How about that organization that you find out about in the ending credits of MGS2? I haven't played it in a while so I forget what they're called..."The Patriots" maybe? Anyway, I think they take the cake. (I'm not talking about the in-game villians, I'm talking about the storyline villians that you don't hear about until the game is over...)

Yeah they're called the Patriots, though you do hear about them beforehand - they crop up throughout the game in conversations.

I considered mentioning the Patriots, but didn't because the game implies them as the sort of Skull and Bones Scociety and Illuminate, which are part of the real world, so they don't really count as true video game villains, but are an interesting evil force of the story.

But Helios wasn't evil, its intentions were for the good of mankind, at least in DX1 (weren't they?).

I was referring to the Tracer Tong ending in the first game, but you're right, the Omar ending in DX 2 was rather amazing.

I didn't like any of the DX2 endings really - you were forced to choose between deceiving the entire human race (Illuminati), siding with the psycho close-to-Nazi Templars, letting JC/Helios violate everyone's minds (if you talk to him/it for ages in Antarctica, Alex asks something like "But what if people don't want to be merged with Helios?" and he/it replies along the lines of "It's for their own good", a principle which I really don't like in government), or you're responsible for World War 3 (or is it 4? was the Collapse 3?).

That's why the party ending is best.

But in all honesty, that sucks too.

PS. I don't think that the collapse counts as a war.

I agree. It was a choice between extremes that just were not interesting enough. I maintain my stance that plunging the world into a new dark age by destroying communication is the coolest ending to any game, and the quotations at the end DX 1 were a nice touch. The Helios ending was really good too, though.

DXIW really was a serious letdown. Damn the XBoxers, who had it console-ised, and those who complained that the first game was too long and complex!

Let's not forget Kerrigan and Arthas. Good guys gone bad make some of the best villians, and they were both sooooooo eeeeeeeviiiiiiiiil. Just look at how Kerrigan ruthlessly slaughters (don't get onto me about spoilers, the game's been out for years) Fenix and Duke, and let's not forget the ending to "The Frozen Throne."

The main villian in Fallout was really cool, too, especially if you get the negotiator's ending.

Damn!!! I was just going to say Shodan>Helios even though i'm only halfway through the game :D

Love SS2...but they don't have any human interaction (at least in no.2, haven't played the first)and its kinda annoying being stuck on a ship all alone...well, not quite all alone *checks behind and panics at seeing mutant with wrench* At least...I don't *think* they have human interaction, i'm only halfway or so...maybe someone is still alive. Then again, you really do feel something from the crew members logs, and eventually tracking down and finding their dead bodies for that elusive engineering passcode...

I loved DX as well, but the only game that gets 50% of the scare factor of SS2 was Aliens vs Predator, playing as marine.
