didn't someone try and sue Judas Priest or someone because their son killed himself, and listened to their music, and they thought the music had secret messages in it that said "do it"?

Heh, they're funny, but Stairway to Heaven doesnt feel like it's being played backwards. I'll try it out myself later...but i think they're fake.

Edit- heh, I found this on the guy's site:

"Let me just finish by saying that anyone who believes this whole Stairway to Heaven backmasking thing is anything more than a neat coincidence is not the sharpest crayon in the box. Sorry guys, I know its fun and everything but let's get real. For example, I had a different person recently thank me in an email and tell me about how she was throwing her old albums away because of it...

Dear Jeff,
Thanks for your Stairway to Heaven (and other songs) backwards! I'm putting my old Led Zeppelin albums from the 70's in the trash straight away!

Much appreciated!
Rita

I can hardly believe it. Next time you or anybody you know, wants to throw out collectors items including their old Stairway to Heaven vinyls, please send them to me instead."

LOL.

No, it was Black Sabbath with their song "Suicide Solution," which was about beer, and used solution in the scientific context. It said to get the gun, and why try when you can die.

Different case: Judas Priest were indeed taken to court over the alleged backmasked subliminals on their LP "Stained Class". Interestingly enough one of the key debating points was whether they were audible and understandable when played forwards - IIRC if they were they were then covered by US legislation concerning free speech, if they weren't then the case would be thrown out of court. It was something of a no-win situation for those prosecuting them. Eventually when it came to court Judas Priest not only pointed out that yes, certain sections of a song did seem to say "Do it!", but also found other locations on the LP where the words "It's so fishy I think I'll buy one" were discernable when reversed.

They were found not guilty.

As for simply phonologically, the Britney Spears, Queen, and Beatles ones work close enough.

The Stairway To Heaven backwards seems to also need certain tone to get it backwards and is too complicated to attempt without a copy of the song to play backwards- and using one on the internet just means it could be tampered with. :\

The only one I can see is "If there's" = "[n]I(f) th(ere)[a?]'s= s[a?]htin", but that's a stretch.

[Where [] is implied by the song, and () is for a number of reasons "invisible" in the reverse, such as very low stress.]

"If backmasking worked, every song would have 'BUY THIS RECORD!' backwards." ~ Robert Plant.

IIRC, Stairway was written in about an hour at Headley Grange, ergo the backwards "lyrics" are complete nonsense in my opinion.

i believe in the judas priest trial, the defense proved that you can find random phrases in any lyrical music played backwards.

Ah yes, but remember that three out of the four members of the band had (allegedly) sold their souls to Satan, and so he may have been lending them a helping hand.

(Points if you name the one who supposedly didn't sell his soul).

Correct. I guess the one advantage of being the dorkiest member of a band is that you do not have to endure an eternity of fire and brimstone in the afterlife.

I don't believe that there is subliminal messaging in hard rock, I mean, why would you need it, you can get away with making the message straight forward. Now I am concerned, what if the latest Britney Spears album has backwards messages saying 'Keep buying this awful shit' over and over and over again?

If she does, it seems to be working. Otherwise, why would a single album ever sell? :\

Heh, that was a funny site, personally I don't believe in the devil or that these people did it on purpose. I couldn't understand the lyrics very well anyway and wouldn't have ever picked up on it without the lyrics printed right in front of me.

"It's fun to smoke marijuana" lol...

I once taught myself to say "nacho" backwards (osh-tan) just so I could record it, reverse it, and play it back. Really, I did. Stop staring at me like that.

Cradle of Filth's "Dinner at Deviant's Palace" has the Lord's Prayer backmasked into it, in case there's anyone here that hasn't heard of that one yet. Freaks me out every time I listen to it.

For what it's worth, I don't believe that backmasking has any kind of power to influence anyone subliminally. I don't believe in Satan, either. There. I said it.

Personally, I dont think the Satanic message thing holds any weight, but it is also worth noting that the mansion of Headley Grange was the home of some Satanist dude whos name escapes my mind right now.

Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn - an occult fellowship which was most prominent in the early half of the last century. It drews its influences from the usually places - alchemy, medievalism, freemasonry, and wasn't afraid to make up history from fresh cloth. Arthur Machen & William Butler Yeats were other members of note.

Irrelevant note: if the HOGB had been a hacker/cracker group it would have been called something like tEh HeRmEtIk OrDeR oV tEh GoLdEn DaWn.

Freeze dry forward- "The End of Death"
Played backwards there is an entirely different song muted and underlaced beneath the regular song. Some people say the title of the song is Beat me Sane but I'm sure that's a lie. Oh yeah there is also the song "Regular Psychopaths". When played backwards you can hear the pledge of alligence in german. It's hilarious to me...except when it's creepy.

Motorhead deliberately backmasked messages on Nightmare/The Dreamtime off the 1916 album. The message was "tea and cakes with Judas Priest" or something equally as silly...

The introduction to Slayer's Hell Awaits has the backmasked message "join us" repeated over and over.
