What is car theory? Is that like the theory of the flying DeLorean from "Back to the Future"?

No. It's a theory test that you have to take, in the UK, if you are learning to drive...and you have to have passed it in order to be able to take your practical driving test.

A written/electronic test of laws, procedures, basic car maintainence questions, and (maybe) courteous driving practice?
That'd be like our written test here for our learners permit.
(Which has never made much sense to me. Shouldn't you be tested in actually driving before they let you drive with a professional's/adult's supervision, then have a test of what they're supposed to be watching over you for once you watch it? I mean, since everyone starts driving two or three years before they legally can, they're gonna know how to do it by the time you test 'em...)
