Just wondering...which processor is better (single processor):

AMD Athlon 64 FX-53
AMD Athlon 64 3400+ -- what I have
AMD Opteron (1.7GHZ? -- I cannot remember the clock speed)

I've never used anything but celeron. Except in the earlier times when floppy disks were actually floppy. I have no idea what that was. Although I could have gone with an Athlon when I replaced my malfunctioning 'puter recently, but the PC I was looking at didn't even have a damn floppy drive. WTF was up with that?

had the same problem with my system...I bought a FDD and put it in for $19 (USD)

Depends on what type of applications your computer runs the most, you might want to google for some computer specific forums, theyd have more knowledge of the latest hardware.

Look on the AMD site for benchmark results (Intel site has them too, but for it's own processors).

This is written on a PC using an AMD 350 Mhz ... slow compared to my 1.7 Ghz P4 (mobile).

see...I know the benchmark results...I just wanted to know what people thought

yeah take a look at www.tomshardware.com

It really all depends on your uses

Things like the opteron are focused on server/network operations

I would say the athlon 64 is your best "rounded out" processor ... kind of the jack of all trades :)

One little question...my Athlon64 3200+ runs a little hot (45-51 C) is this too high?

AMD Opteron, Intel Xeon, and Intel Itanium are really designed for server/workstations (Doesn't stop me from getting a 'personal computer' *cough* basically server for PC*cough* with Quad Xeon Processors and 2 120 gb RAID hard drives and of course dual nVidia 6800 Ultras.. - Don't bitch to me, I ain't payin for it shiet.)

Probably not. Modern processors run so fast they emit far more heat then their prececessors. I never actually put my P4 laptop in my lap, the bottom of the laptops really heats up!

Stick the P4 or Athlon for gaming I say. I'd really like a quad P4 ...

No problem for that processor .... I would say as a rough rule 50 c is getting warm 60 is unto the unhealthy and I would watch 70 +

But down into the 40's np

Agreed (I use a quad amd mp system here) but really ... all it does is format and run a defrag fast :-P games are not optimized for much more then one (some two but they are rare)

Besides that for gaming it is just throwing your money at it

Right now the quad is my server/gaming machine lol … yeah I know … but I have to have something that is stable for now while I get my BSD box secured :)

I was worried because my parent's athlon 3000+ (not 64 bit) runs around 36-42 C

That's cooler than my Athlon XP2800+ runs (stock cooling): You're fine.

I modded the heatsink....a 40CFM 80mm fan (happy!)
The reason I was worried was that this was cooler than my 64bit machine (I was worried about my 64bit one)
