What determines a threads rating? For instance, there are two threads on the first page with 4 out of 5 stars, but there doesn't seem to be anything in particular that is special about them.

the posters rate them. It's at the top right of the page.

From what I can best tell, it's just your way of saying "Yeah, this thread is worth reading!" or "No, this thread blows; don't waste your time". Well, maybe not *exactly* like that. In any event, it's just an indicator of how decent you think the topic is, as reference for others.

Yes, it can be an excellent post, but if one disagrees with it they will no doubt mark it as "terrible" despite the quality of the post. Or, likewise the post can actually be terrible, but if it's self serving to some, they will rank it "excellent" , so, I have concluded, the ranking system is pretty much worthless... :eek:
