In yet another example of corporate facism in corporate-occupied America Whoopi Goldberg was fired from Slimfast for speaking truth to power at an expression event in radio city music hall. Anyone who values free speech and democracy must boycott Slimfast until it gives Whoopi reparations for this hate firing based on discrimination against her political orientation--we must do this in remembrance of all the other oppressed celebrities who suffered a similar fate in speaking out against the war last year as well

She spent...I dunno how long. But the whole thing was a tired of her simply insult Bush. Not giving facts against him, not debating in an educated manner...just her ripping on him for-wait, was it ten minutes? I think it was a straight ten minutes of her cursing and just plaing hating him.

Since when has Whoopi Goldberg been a spokesperson for Slim-Fast?

Well I have not heard of the situation but this is my view:

She was hired to be a spokeswoman for the company.

If she was at an event to which she was supposed to represent slimfast and went off on a tangent, then the company has the right to fire her if they so desire.

It would be the same as firing a christian for evangilising while on a company trip.

Now if she was on her own time, that is a different matter.

Ahhhh.

Well it also depends on the contract she signed.

Some companies have rules you agree to follow when being hired to speak, act, what not.

Basically a "Morality" clause.

Don't know.....

As usual, TRA has overstated the case and is making Goldberg look like some sort of martyr.

She did a raunchy bit at a Democratic fundraiser where she repeatedly riffed on Bush's name and pointed to her genitalia. By all accounts, it wasn't very funny, which is no surprise coming from Whoopi. Slimfast decided to can her, as was their right.

That said, those who disagree with Slimfast's decision also have rights--to boycott the product and to protest Slimfast's treatment of Ms. Goldberg, and if they feel strongly enough, I recommend they do just that. But in no way is Slimfast restricting Goldberg's free speech rights--it's not like she was getting paid by Slimfast to make political statements. She was being paid to endorse a product. You didn't see Slimfast commercials pushing Kerry for President, after all. They were pushing Slimfast.

since republicans were boycotting slimfast to get them to fire Whoppi then dems must boycott slimfast for firing her--also dems must boycott Urban Outfitters for funding republican treason too

i find it fairly disingenuous for slimfast to act all offended by whoopis remarks. did they no know who they were hiring when they took her on? did they think they were buying her whole existance?

it reminds me of msnbc hiring michael savage then firing him for saying something anti-gay. they had NO idea of what kind of man he is?

it was only a matter of time until whoopie said something "political" its disgusting that they should pretend to be shocked by her opinions.

Especially when they are a representative of the corporation, possibly under contract not to compare Bush to a woman's nether regions (which is someone no one should do anyways, unless someone can do the same to Kerry).

Now, for my own bashing.

"John Kerry voted in the Senate."

You see, this is proof Johny boy here paid for a clone of himself to fly a plane that crashed into the WTC! Kerry must be Osama's best friend! *insert more bullshit making fun of copy-paste threads*

If slimfast wants to fire her simply because they want to even without reason they should be able to. Or even just because she is black, I support freedom and that includes freedom of business. She has the right to dissent and she did and thats fine but slimfast should be allowed to do what it did, tough

How are remarks made at a nationally televised event private? They aren't, but irrelevant factors never got in the way of TRA making a bogus point.

For the record, though, I support complaining to the Slimfast management, and if you use their crappy little product, then stopping as a matter of protest if this bothers you. I don't use Slimfast, so it's no sweat off their asses if I tell them I'm not going to start. I think Slimfast made a stupid move here, but it's their right to do so.

Edit--Goldberg's remarks weren't televised--they were made at a fundraiser for John Kerry.

In a perfect world, Whoopi Goldberg would be able to say anything she wanted and not get fired from her spokesperson position. Of course, in a perfect world Whoopi would have realized that her jokes were extremely low-brow and did nothing to further any serious debate as to the worthiness of George W. Bush as president. And while Whoopi has the right to free speech, Slimfast also has the right to terminate an employee that they believe has become a liability to the company. And Whoopi happens to be a rich woman who isn't in any way going to stop expressing her political veiws just because of losing one endorsement deal. And because she is as wealthy as she is, and because her celebrity affords her a platform few have anyway, I find it hard to feel sorry for her.

Slimfast has a product to sell, they can't use spokespeople that everyone hates.

It all boils down to money, not freedom of speech.

You're absolutely right. It was funny to hear Jon Stewart cracking on her on The Daily Show a couple of days ago--the clip is on the website. Apparently she was carrying around an empty box of wine on stage with her--must have been loaded to the gills.

When a company hires a person to be a spokesperson they hire based on the type of person they are. This means when the person becomes outlandish

out·land·ish (out-lndsh)
adj.
Conspicuously unconventional; bizarre.

Synonyms at strange.

Strikingly unfamiliar.
Located far from civilized areas.
Archaic. Of foreign origin; not native.

then the company has every right to fire the person.

I would call calling the President a "pussy" is just a bit outlandish. Come on - If Mr. Moore wouldn't do it then you shouldn't...

This has nothing to do with political freedom (which you don't have when you work for someone in the first place - If you have a issue with this then find a new company).

PS - I doubt she cares she got fired. She has more money then most people could ever spend (granted all well deserved), and in all reality no publicity at this point is bad (Well maybe a Federal Crime would be bad...).

PPS - She doesn't belong at Slim Fast in the first place. I mean really... She was the spokeswoman for a cookie company before working for Slim Fast <--- Humor
