Homestar Runner on MTV! Vote August 10!

VOTE!
On August 10, 2004, Internet geeks the world over will take back MTV (as if they had it once before)! Vote for "Experimental Film" by They Might Be Giants on August 10, and help us geek up America's "coolest" show!
Why are we doing this?
Quite frankly, I don't much like MTV. No, let me rephrase that. I really, really, really don't like MTV. They propogate a culture that is entirely based on marketing and physical beauty (not that much else in this world isn't, but MTV is by far the worst offender) and give no creedence to bands, videos, or culture that doesn't fit their definition of "cool." And, as Internet geeks, we're the only ones who really know what "cool" is, right?
Why "Experimental Film?"
We're very blessed in this instance: Homestarrunner.com has combined a long-time dork cult favorite (They Might Be Giants) with a more recent one (Homestar Runner and Company). I know that a big ol' chunk of the Internet loves Homestar Runner, and I'm sure those who don't have the same passion for TMBG that I do will easily jump ship once they hear the song. For the uninitiated, the video for "Experimental Film" is available here. (http://www.homestarrunner.com/expfilm.html)
This is so freaking sweet! How can I help?
The easiest way to help is to simply vote for the video. Any time on August 10, 2004, visit MTV's website (yes, we all have to make sacrifices). Click on "Shows," then click on "TRL." Finally, click the "Vote" button... and you're one step closer! And if you don't want to follow all of that, just follow this link (http://www.mtv.com/onair/trl/vote/).
Because They Might Be Giants is not a band of über-hotties, you won't find an easy way to vote for their video. For this reason, select the circle at the bottom and enter "Experimental Film" for song and "They Might Be Giants" for artist. At least some of us would probably do well to mention Homestar in the "What'd ya think of the vid?" box below. And remember: things in that box get on TV, so say stupid stuff like "i vote 4 this vid cuz strong sad is sexay!!!!! <3"
The other way to support the cause is to get the word out. Tell your friends, neighbors, loved ones, pets, gaming buddies, and fellow Internet geeks about this plan. Copy-and-paste this post and put it in other forums you frequent. Have those people spread the word. If each of us makes the effort to just tell a few people, the word will get out quickly, and MTV won't be able to ignore us!
That's a lot of text... summarize?
Okay, fine:
1. On August 10, visit TRL's voting page on MTV.com (http://www.mtv.com/onair/trl/vote/)
2. Vote for "Experimental Film" by They Might Be Giants (http://www.homestarrunner.com/expfilm.html).
3. Watch TRL (yes, I know, I know) for the next few days to see how we did.
4. Prior to steps 1, 2, and 3, GET THE WORD OUT!

Reminds me of when Howard Stern got his fans to vote for Hank the Angry Drunken Dwarf as the "most handsome man" of some sort, and he actually won...
Oh GOD no, I'm not voting.
The last thing I need to see MTV be associated with now is another branch of dork culture :p

Uh, yeah. We pretty much define cool. Underground-cool. Which is cooler than normal cool.
Anyway, if it hurts MTV, I'm all for it. I think I'll spread this up wherever I can.

Ok... that was.... lacking...
no seriously, that does not live up to homestarrunner standards... I mean, the cheat's movies are just lame... he rocks and all... but a cheat toon about strong sad? come on!
The only cool part was the bridge... other than that, I'll admit, as an H*R fan,
THAT SUCKED.

You have to admit two things, though:
1. It worked for the song, as the song is about art films that (due to weirdness) defy definition, and that really resembled one there.
2. it's a lion!

Eh...MTV is bad enough already. They took the M out of it. Also, you guys don't know what you're talking about. They play some pretty weird "Internet cool" (which is pretty lame, and I'm on the internet a lot) music stuffs late at night. And if you don't like MTV, don't watch it. That's the best way to hurt it. People stop watching it and advertisers stop paying them. Simple as that. It's called boycott. Don't ruin with crappy internet lameness like LamestarBoringman. There are like 2 good videos on that entire site (the guitar email and the techno email). That is it. Nothing on that site can be good. I don't even watch much TV and people who define what "Internet cool" is don't watch much TV either (as they're too busy busting up their brains with tard humor like homestarrunner). If you want something funny, watch MTV when Viva La Bam is on. Go to ebaums world or check out the videos at skoopy.com. Better yet, be social and make friends with someone who is funny (it's why my friends enjoy me). Any way, I guess I'll just leave you guys to think you know what "cool" is and let you go tear up already torn up TV.

What about Trogdor?
Opal Isle
16-07-2004, 07:43
Well, only the second half of that one is okay. The whole first half with the drawing of it is pretty lame. I must say though, absolutely nothing outside of the emails is worth my time.

Ugh. No, thanks.
Go to ebaums world or check out the videos at skoopy.com.
I think I've had dental work more funny than 99% of the stuff on Ebaums World. Never been to skoopy.
Better yet, be social and make friends with someone who is funny (it's why my friends enjoy me).
See, this is precisely the kind of attitude that gets to me about a lot of people online. The assumption is immediately that those who partake in online humor and socialization must immediately have no social lives. All told, I'm on NationStates for about ten minutes a day now: long enough to check this thread, post a reply, get bored, and go find something more interesting to do. Access to the Internet is not mutually exclusive with social activity.
Also, having a friend who is funny can only get you so far in the world, since I doubt many people here could understand the humor inherent in "Now you're on the trolley... you're on the trolley... TROLLEY!" It's funny, sure, but it's not "screwing with MTV" funny.
Any way, I guess I'll just leave you guys to think you know what "cool" is and let you go tear up already torn up TV.
I have no idea what that means. "Torn up TV?" Are you implying that I broke my TV for hatred of MTV? That I'm watching it so much that it's broken? That I accidentally ripped my TV in two while trying to pin it to the wall OH GOD ENTERING RAGE! :headbang:

Well, it's a personal belief and it's not offensive in the sense of the language I used. Also, it's straight to the point and brutally honest.

So your personal belief is that those who don't care are snoring? If so, that's a lot of sleeping people right there.
In short, don't bore me with semantics, or I'll bore into you with them. =P

But I didn't say "bored;" I said "bored into." There's a fun little semantic quandary, isn't it?
Getting back on topic, my thanks to those who showed support. And if you don't like the video, you're honestly doing nothing to convince others of your cause by posting THAT VIDEO SUCKED in OMG HUGE LETTARZ or by bitching about how it's not the best thing on H*R (memo to self: have people vote for Trogdor next time so they'll quit whining about this) or how much you hate H*R. Let those who will vote, vote; if you don't want to, I'm not going to force you to. :D

Which it is. When you click submit it loads that servlet/viewflash thing. It a buffer to prevent spamming. but you can still shave a little time off by clicking the back button on your borwser as soon as the thanks.jhtml page begins to load and start again.
Does anyone have any program knowledge. It'd be cool it we could just automate this.
I have to say, I'm not sure *exactly* what I'm supposed to be voting for
do we have to specify the homestar version? If so, how?
also, where do you find out how many votes it has?
Scolopendra
10-08-2004, 19:41
Well, for sake of standardization, I suggest that in the "Title" box we put
"Experimental Film" (Homestarrunner version)
And in the artist box:
They Might Be Giants
This will ease the difficulties in web-based counts of write-ins and increase our chances of success. As for how many votes... that's only known by how many times you click submit, so it's sort of a 'vote early and often' situation. Seeing how MTV, in their infinitesimal wisdom, has decided that multiple voting is legal, I recommend voting as often as you feel like.
New Astrolia
10-08-2004, 19:46
You dont. The link to homestar runner was jsut an example of what it is your voting for. The fool who organised this knew that the homestar runner .swf was officially sanctioned by "They might be giants" What they didnt know was that there was two different film clips. The home star runner and the regular commercial one. Theres no way we can get the homestar onto MTV. But I've still been making submissions all night.
And the dude who said it had a specific number of votes was just saying that he had voted for it that number of times.
To vote what you need to do it Click the "other" circle at the bottom of the page and fill in all the required slots. Thats important.
Artist name
Video Title
First name
Last name
Date of birth
State
the good thing is you can just click back and all the information you entered in the fields is still there. So its not much of a hassle to keep clicking submit.
but remember what I said about the Spam filter.
And Scolop your idea wont work. They dont know where to get the homestarrunner version. they dont even know what Homestar is.
