You don't need to like classical music

But you do need to appreciate it. You don't need to enjoy listening to it, you don't need to play it on your car stereo, you don't need to know the name of every symphony composed by Beethoven, you don't even need to know how to spell Beethoven. But you do need to acknowledge that it is good.

Just my personal opinion.

Ehm, don't talk down on me like I don't know anything about music. It is called classical because of the style and time period. It has nothing to do with the quality.

Yeah, and not everything people call "classical" is truly classical. Most of it is Romantic.

I don't make a point of listening to a lot of it, but I've never disliked it.

Didn't see your name up there. Anyways, I think he was commenting that classical music as a style is good. Sure there are crappy pieces in any genre of music, but that doesn't make the whole genre is crap.

My point is, and none of what I just said made my point for me it was just rambling, I agree that classical music is good. Wow, I think I just made a run on appositive...is that even possible?

Heh, yea...Mozart is Romantacism, not Classical...oh, and be sure not to confuse classical with neo-classical. There are tons of musical periods. People really aren't very informed.

Don't get your panties in a twist, I simply was trying to make the point that music without merit doesn't survive for hundreds of years being performed regularly in a short and clever manner. I obviously was unsuccessful in communicating this to you.

...but it does...

Not everything that guys like Beethoven wrote was ingenius, however, because he had a few great hits, people started saving all of his music, no matter the quality...

I spent a lot of time during my senior year of high school studying music from the Romantic Age... it was all quite good... and I know the difference between that and classical music... but that was some time ago.

It's times like this that I wish I had the music to Moonlight Sonata.

Sorry, Mozart is classical. Anyway, I like the composers from the Romantic period better anyway:

Fanny Mendelssohn Hensel (1805-1847)
Frédéric Chopin (1810-1849)
Johannes Brahms (1833-1897)
Peter Ilich Tchaikovsky (1840-1893)
Claude Debussy (1862-1918)
Richard Strauss (1864-1949)

Among others....

Another great composer that isn't classical would be Johannes Bach. He was Baroque.

Actually it's called that just because it incorporates classical themes of composition, as opposed to folk music from the same time period.

As far as modern composers go, how about:

Robert W. Smith
Frank Ticheli
Bob Margolis
Jack Stamp

Probably many others that I can't think of right now. Oh, and free, legal samples of all of those (except Smith) can be downloaded at www.ManhattanBeachMusic.com

Fantasia Nova - Bob Margolis. Hehe, if you don't laugh at the first movement, check your pulse.
