Eh, it wasn't too bad but I'm not a big fan of Tolstoy's writing style. I read it about 16 years ago in high school.

And while we'r at it, who has read The Fountainhead, the Bible. and the Patriot Act? I'd like to hear a compare and contrast of all four. So anyone that has a couple years free, get right on it. ;)

its only 1400 pages. not the, what, 3000 of the bible. its basically the length of all the lord of the rings together(including the hobbit.)

sorry to burst your bubble, but that's not hard. i'm ashamed of our country's vocabulary/spelling/grammar skills.

i always read as a kid. always. i guess i'm still a kid, but whatever.

yeah, i know. the education system here sucks real hard. the only time i got any good vocab out of school was last year, and then my teacher took each word from the SAT list. :?

crime and punishment is excellent, i've heard the same for the brothers karamazov, and war and peace i've never read. although i suppose i should.

but as for margaret atwood, she's one of my favorite authors. the handmaid's tale, the blind assassin, and oryx and crake are 3 fantastical books.

i was a bit... really in to the SW books for a while... i think i read about 30 or so before i decided to retire it from my list. Now i'm trying to get into the more questioning and philosophical books.

i've had bad luck with those for the most part-the authors are inept and the novels turn out boring.

deep thinking. the name eludes me right now, but one book-the author got so carried away with big words that he said nothing of importance or interest.

haha. people like that should be barred from the world of writing. It just makes the book annoyingly long. at least with the good books they can have it be lengthy but each chapter gives certain character or feel to the story.

exactly. it's harder to be concise than wordy, so authors take note.

There was something unique about the SW series. Whenever i read a series, it felt like one longass book, since its a series, but each had a unique style and feel, since each of the books are written by different authors. It just made an impact on my earlier reading, and it really made reading more fun to me than before.

what was the thing that sparked any of you guys to enjoy reading?

i read 100 pages of 1984, but since it was someone elses book and i had to go back to america, i didnt finish... ill pick that up too...

Read both...1984 2 or 3 times but L of the F only once...once was enough :?

We read 1984 and Brave New World at school - then had to compare the societies.

I've seen part of Patriot - it's so bogus. Right now I'm reading The Crucible. Why couldn't have Miller just put the book during his own time period instead of all this symbolism about how the Witchcraft symbolizes Communism- besides, I find the pre-american revolutionary war time period to be quite dreary, no offence

Both Patriot and Patriot II are crap.

I read The Crucible . Hated it. Although I don't see where any of the commie symbolism occurs. What I got out of it was injustice and what hysteria can do to a community of people.

I actually read War & Peace last year, its excellent...possibly the greatest Novel I've ever read... If you're on page 300... just one thing... Vaska Denisov comes back later...

Its a good read...so engaging... and very philosophical...

Lord of the Flies in my opinion was a fairly good, if....differant book IMO.It is a parable on human nature.

Now one book I loved was the Grapes of Wrath.

got, witch hunts.

I also just finished Into the Wild By John Krakauer. That's about a boy, Chris McCandless who essentially decides to become a vagabond. He eventually dies in Alaska, but its the story of his life. That book is really good.

The one I'm reading right now is On Writing by Steven King. Part Autobiography, part instruction manuel, its actually quite good.
