Loaded AK-47.

In what circumstances?

***

I grew up (and still live) in Belfast and used to think nothing of the fact that the soldiers on patrol here would be pointing their rifles right at you while they were checking you out through their telescopic sights as you went about your daily business. Thinking back on it, however, I find it all quite disturbing.

Police, me and some friends were shooting fireworks off and I shot one at my one friend and she screamed. Cops got called thinking a woman got shot.

I was holding one pistol style thinking it was just old people yelling at us, then I saw the badge. I stuck it in the ground and ran like a fuck.

And then turned around because I decided I could better talk my way out then run.

No charges, no search. All I had to do was turn over the fireworks in my plastic bag(they never noticed the ones in my pockets or in my knapsack.)

They didn't seach the two other guys, meaning we got to keep our weed and most of our fireworks.

Twice, once in while in high school and again in college.

The high school incident happened while my best friend and I were driving home after visiting his GF. It was Saturday night, around 1am on a highway that has a reputation for lots of drunks. I was asleep on the bed in the back of the van. We had not been drinking, but my friend got pulled over by a cop. He forgot to mention I was in the back when the cop searched the car. I woke up with a start when the cop opened the door and sat up quickly. The cop drew on me.

The college insident involved showing off for a cute girl by trespassing on a ranch. The rancher had been having problems with tresspassers, and was lying in wait with a shotgun.

Alas, I have seen the business end of a fire arm more than once. Many years ago I was in New York during an international conference that also happened to have another, special attendee ... President Ronald Reagan. I was walking down the street in the financial district and turned the corner, and was face to face with a pair of young marines with M-16's - but that wasn't as scary as the two accros the street who had their guns aimed at me (as a tourist, I was wearing a back-pack, and looked "out of place" ... bag searched ... turned around - left).

Several years later, while travelling in Austria, I was coming home days after the Lokerby air disaster (when it was still thought to be a terrorist attack). When I arrived at the Vienna airport I found out what an H&K MP5 looks like, up close. Submachine guns are not really what you want to see in the hands of people, but I suppose the level of anxiety was understandable.

Fast forward ... I was in St. Elmo, Illonois (really) - on a business trip - and during some time off the son of the person I was staying with decided to show me how to shoot ... he had a really amazing gun collection, including a .22, 9mm, .357 magnum, .44, and several varieties of rifles - including one that had been converted into an automatic with some spring device (about $5 worth of hardware). Anyway, as I was "playing" with the .22, trying to "kill" a target (actually got fairly decent at it), he was showing me the .357 and .44. At one point he was saying something about gun safety, about what not to do, and had the .44 up to my head .... "this is what you should never do ... unless you mean it ..."

Well, I got the message - (and I could have changed my shorts after as well).

Urrr..., Lockerby was a terrorist attack. As to whether it was really the Libyans behind it is a different matter, but I don't think there is any dispute about the fact it was a bomb that caused the disaster.

Hmmm. Well, if Japan has a much higher population density than, for example, the US, then surely one is going to be statistically more likely to witness such events, even if the murder rate is the same, no?

(Fluffing the statistics slightly for te sake of debate, but you know what I mean...)

yeah...it happened while negotiating a roundabout in Morocco...out in the countryside.

There was a lot of shouting and when i looked in the mirror there were two police/soldiers (never did find out who they were) with their machine guns aimed at the car and it seemed like a good idea to stop.

They came running up and i had a gun pointing at my chest, my partner had the other gun pointing at his. Strangely there wasn't time to be scared.

I don't speak arabic but everyone speaks french in Morocco...the situation focused my mind beautifully on my long-forgotten french from school days.

We showed our passports and as soon as they reaslised we were tourists they turned friendly and waved us away.

To this day i haven't a clue what it was all about and i don't know how close we really came to being shot at. Hmmmmm...

Well, Japan has a very significantly lower murder rate, for one thing (although it's rising quickly).

And Dragons, Japan also has very strict gun control - at least compared to back home in Houston.

I never noticed any gun control in Houston other than the strict requirement that you pay for the weapon you acquire. Unless you shoot someone for it.

I've had loaded guns pointed at me several times. Mostly (by family members) with the safety on. The one time I remember quite clearly is the time (in Houston) I was going out for my nightly two-mile run and about 3/4 of the way home, an SUV started pacing me, following just a few feet behind me (I was on the sidewalk and it was on the street). It was a Cadillac Escalade. Now I know there was nobody in that neighborhood who owned a freakin Lac, so I was a little suspicious just based on that. After a few hundred feet it started to pull even with me and I saw a man in the passenger seat holding a gun pointed straight out of his window at me. I was ready to run or fight, but nothing happened. They just suddenly sped up and drove on past. I don't know why I didn't die that night.

I'm glad I'm still here to annoy you people.

You got that right! Japan may not be as safe as it was when I first got here, but I've never seen the wrong end of either a .357 or a 12G here.
(And if anyone wonders, yes, the sound of a someone pumping a shotgun in the dark is hellaciously scary.)

Now that you mention it and I read these posts I guess I've had more than the average occasions;

Savanagh, GA 1974 - Police stopped my brother for speeding. I got out of the car to talk to the cops and found out why they call it 'the shotgun seat' when he pumped it while pointing it at me and ordered me back into the car. I never did figure out how I did get back in my seat, closed the door and placed my hands atop the dash in one millionth of a second.

The Bronx about the same year - A connection's wife let us in to score. When we entered the living room the dealer pulled a .small revolver from under his pillow and cocked it and pointed it at me. Apparently he was crashing off meth and we "startled" him.

112th Street between St. Nicholas Avenue and MLK - about 1980
The second time I was robbed as a cab driver. One had what felt like a rough or serrated knife to my throat while the other had what he said was a gun to my head. They got busted, I got the money back. The cops never found the gun. (The first time I was robbed a guy and gal I picked up in The Bronx used a scapel held to my adam's apple. They took the car & got away with it.)

Another time I was in a small after hours gambling joint in The Bronx when it was held up. They had us lay on the floor face down. Apparently the manager was too slow for their liking and they busted a cap just above his head. I couldn't see so I thought they shot him so we were all goners.

Another time a passenger found a loaded .357 revolver in the back of my cab. It was wrapped in a bloody towel. Apparently a fare I had in the car just before her, who said he had cut his hand, left it behind. That one took almost all night with the cops who seemed to suspect I was somehow involved. They never did find a victim that I knew of. Oh yes, that was also in The Bronx.

I think that pretty much covers the guns pointed at me part. NYC Cops don't really count since they rarely shoot. What can I say? A misspent youth - in The Bronx.

ok, umm, i got shot once (by accident) when I went hunting with a buddy. He dropped his shotgun, it went off (dumb punk forgot to put on the safety), and next thing I know some pellets ricochet back into us. Wasn't bad, just a couple hit us, but they barely even broke the skin. I slugged him in the face for it though, and he fell off the stand :).

Also, I got stopped while REALLY stoned by the cops at a driver's license check, and since my window motor had burned out and I couldn't roll it down I opened the door. Next thing I know I'm on my face on the ground with 6 guns on me. I explained, they didn't notice I was stoned, and I went home. Luckily I was too stoned to be worried at the time, or I would have pissed myself.

Also, I caught a guy trying to break into my house at night one time, I was on the stairs, and when he walked by I cracked his head open with the butt end of a loaded shotgun, and held it on him while my Dad was calling the cops. He (the thief) DID piss himself, after he woke up. From what I heard they had to take him to the hospital for stitches, and I did not feel bad for him at all. Except I was mad when I had to wipe the blood off the floor. Apparently hitting someone in the temple with a shotgun can make them bleed a good bit.

Gotta love South Carolina....
