I have created a channel on IRC just for political discussion, no words games.. etc.. just politics. Same as here, it will be modded, although probably not as strictly..

How to Access:

1. Download an Internet Relay Chat (IRC) program. mIRC is the preferred program for PC users, but there are programs for just about any type of computer. A Yahoo! search for IRC programs should yield positive results for your particular system. Or just go to http://www.mirc.com Yes it's free, just ignore the register part.

2. Connect to server "irc.esper.net (6667)".

3. Join the channel "#nationstates_politics" (without quotation marks).

It's up now, but I just registered it. But feel free to come hang out even if you don't take part.

Any reason why this cant be moved to another network?

I know Fusionchat has a great network, with several ways to access the rooms, including IRC, pjIRC (no downloading required), CGI:IRC and Covu, both of which are designed for access when your provider network has chat blocked.

I used to work with the people there, and still attend rather frequently. The owner would be more than happy to help users start their own room for regions too.

But what is its connection port?

I would hate to have to run another chat window when I have mIRC already. Its just that the port (6667) is blocked from campus network.

...why a FIRST team?

Then you might not be blocked.
Some campuses block.
Some business networks block
Some school and libraries block.

Thats why Adam at FC wrote Covu, and has CGI:IRC on his system.

Because it's the only website I admin on and had a good excuse to put an IRC applet on.

Port 8080, that's probably why. Esper blocks open proxies because they have such trouble with spambots etc. using them.
8080, if I remember correctly, is an HTTP proxy port.

Well then, we have some similar intentions.

I am not an admin now, but I was an network admin at FC before. Im still an oper there now. As soon as Adam gets around to giving me my oper pass.

But the same reasons I mentioned apply. He has done some extensive work to make sure people can access from all sorts of blocked locations... including placing his chat-applet on non-FC sites so that people can access when their browsers are set to kill pages that are chat based.

Adam has an extensive set of programs to run with mIRC that keep attacks and spammers out pretty well.

He allows 8080 so that people can access even when they are blocked. Even so, his opers and protocols track IP addresses, kill clones and intercept attacks pretty well.

Wow, I haven't done Mirc in over 4 years. I was a Mircaholic and had OPS on two channels. I used to be able to do popups and had a zillion wav files and colorful popups. Alas I have forgotten how to do this stuff. I registered though, and sit alone in #nationstates_politics whilst typing this.
