What do you think of these metal bands?

Well okay I was looking through the forum one day a week or so ago... maybe two weeks... and I came up upon the obscure band thread. However, the crappiness of the forums prevented me from posting and I didn't feel like looking for that thread the next day.

Back to the point. I would like to know what you think of the following list of bands so I will know which ones are generally liked and which ones are generally hated and of course which of my liked bands are actually obscure.
NOTE: I don't mean all the bands I listen to are obscure... some are quite reknowned and famous. So don't post telling me that Iron Maiden isn't obscure.

No particular order...

Iron Maiden
Bronx Casket Company (don't bother answering this one because there's no way you've heard of them)
Strapping Young Lad
Blind Guardian
Black Sabbath
Celtic Frost
Children of Bodom
Cradle of Filth
Death
Rage
Dragonforce
Ensiferum
GWAR
Haggard
Iced Earth
Finntroll
Opeth
Tiamat
Lost Horizon
Metallica (older stuff... yes... naturally)
Rob Zombie/White Zombie
Rage (not against the machine, just Rage)
Savatage
Sirenia
Slayer
System of a Down (not metal... nu-metal I know I know don't yell at me)
Dog Fashion Disco (semi-metal... more nu-metal also)
Therion
Amorphis
Anthrax
Blood Duster
Candlemass
My Dying Bride
Six Feet Under
Edguy
Einherjer
Judas Priest
Kataklysm
Kamelot
Manowar
Metal Church
MotÖrhead (thanks a lot Bodies... but its capitalized...)
Nevermore
Offspring (older albums) (definately not metal... but they used to be my favorite band for too long for me to omit them now...)
Orphaned Land
Overkill
Pantera
Rage Against the Machine (kinda... I kinda like 'em... but meh... I know once again--not quite metal)
Scorpions (only mentioned because of the song The Zoo--and in my humble opinion Iron Maiden greatly improved it when they covered it)
Sentenced (I gotta admit a lot of their songs sound alike... especially in the chorus)
Shaman
Testament
Rhapsody
Strife
LaserHead sharks

Rage Against the Machine (kinda... I kinda like 'em... but meh... I know once

Rage Against The Machine counts as Rap/Metal.

And they were the greatists band ever. Now that their gone, no one is worthy of that title.

And Killing in the Name is the best song ever.

Have you ever listened to any Stabbing Westward?
Even though they've gone wuss, Incubus back on Make Yourself and SCIENCE was a force to be reckoned with.
Type O Negative has some odd melodies.

I listen to quite an array of ecclectic music myself, and even I haven't heard of about two-thirds of this list. The stuff that anyone should know I know. The Scorpions really were pretty good. One of 3 German bands I can think of that really know how to play some metal. Rammstein and Guano Apes being the other two. I know of GWAR (I loved Beavis & Butt-head), Anthrax, Motorhead (Lemmy's one of the most innovative bassists around), Slayer, and Testament.

Not a bad list, though, at least of the bands I know.

If you like goth rock, Lacuna Coil is the BEST band out there. Words cannot describe how fantastic they are, both on CD and in concert.
Bodies Without Organs

Motorhead (I know its with the o with the dots on top... I just don't know how to make that symbol)

Here, I'll lend you mine, provided you promise to take good care of it: Ö

... Motorhead (Lemmy's one of the most innovative bassists around)...

Much as I appreciate Mötorhead, Lemmy has been playing pretty much the self same riff on the bass guitar since he left Hawkwind. Yes, its a good one, but I wouldn't call it innovative.

My favorite on the list:

Motorhead (it's amazing how fast they play in Ace of Spades)
Rage against the machine
Offspring (their old stuff...of course)

Yeah, it's nothing that Getty Lee or Les Claypool couldn't play, but his use of the bass guitar more like a rhythm guitar is something that was pretty much the sound Motorhead pursued. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe them to be the only band that really "made it" with that type of sound.

I don't really like Hatebreed... same goes for Arch Enemy.

The others I haven't heard of...

I think I might have heard a couple of Carnal Forge's songs... but I can';t really remember if I did and what songs they were.

No never listened to Stabbing Westward.

Type O Negative yes... Some of their songs I must say I do like... but I haven't really started listening to them.

I don't know... maybe I don't like Scorpions was because their music just has a more antiquatated sound. So I suppose its am age bias.

Rammstein... well... I dunno... I liked Rammstein a couple of years back... but not so much anymore.

As far as goth rock goes.... I have listened to a select few goth metal bands... In my opinion, My Dying Bride is among the best pure goth metal bands out there.

Maybe you guys will kill me for it- But does anyone like Machine Head? I only know one song that I heard the other day, but I like it- "Imperium"

Bands mentioned that I like-
RATM- The first band I really got into :D
Hatebreed
Offspring- Only their album "Smash"
Rammstein
Anthrax
Slayer, I don't mind them
Pantera
Candlemass- \m/ hehe
SOAD- It's not really nu-metal. Its weird...it sorta is, but its more like alt-metal, as it doesnt feature any rap influence
Old Metallica
Black Sabbath- Hell yeah!
Strapping Young Lad
Iron Maiden- Though I'm not really into them, I do have a lot of respect for them
Lacuna Coil
Opeth are OK too

Also, i'd like to mention Sepultura and Soulfly :)

what metal have i been listening to recently?

emperor - okay but profoundly uncatchy.

rawhead rexx - fun but to retro english new wave metal to be great, kinda iron maiden'sand saxon's little brother.

helloween - sometimes cool as hell, sometimes pure cheese

metal church - see helloween

dio - profoundly underrated, even if all his albums sorta sound alike

accept - original lead singer is an ugly little bulldog and more of a closet case than rob h. ever dreamed of being, that probably why they kicked so much ass.

slayer - past their prime by the mid 90's, but never turned into the whores metallica became.

I've never really liked Dio... He was good in Sabbath, but his solo thing... I never really liked.

Accept... I kinda like Accept... but heard only a couple of their songs.

You forgot some good ones...

Hatebreed
Arch Enemy
Nonexist
Forest for the Trees
Amaran
Carnal Forge

I mean, if you don't know the other 5, you at LEAST NEED TO KNOW ARCH ENEMY. COME ON!

Hatebreed is boring, populist, redundant, posturing, preening, beta male nonsense. Arch Enemy is uninteresting Gothenburg-derived shit. Nonexist is Johan Liva's even shittier project and there is one semi-interesting riff in the entire album (Deus Deceptor), and they played it twice in seperate songs, an indication of their lack of creativity. A World Depraved by Amaran is actually not bad for what it is, which is wussy Swedish homosexual music, but that's all that comes out of Sweden these days so I guess you have to accept it. Carnal Forge is just plain horrible. Overproduced shlock with absolutely no heart whatsoever. I've never heard of FFTT, but I'm sure it's wretched as well.

he wasnt that good in sabbath. ozzy was better. dio just felt like a cheap replacement.
now that balck sabbath is back to its roots, they are THE GREATEST BAND! {and were always the best band ever, even without Geezer and Osbourne, though, of course, they are now better since the founding members are back} I'm listening to Sabbath right now. And, i plan on going to ozzfest 2004 with a group of friends}
anyway, the bands on your llist i like are:
Rage against the machine
The old Metallica
Some Rob Zombie
Judas Priest
Iron Maiden
Slayer {i'm going to see them at Ozzfest}
Manowar is OK
and... so is Metal Church
Ohh, and thjough people will kill me for this, some songs by Slipknot rocked. {I'm seeing them at ozzfest too}

Anyways, nothing at all will ever compare to the legendary Black Sabbath. Ozzy Osbourne at vocals; Geezer Butler- Bass; Bill Ward at Drums; and of course, the legendary Tony Iommi at guitar.

Iron Maiden - Greatest band ever
Strapping Young Lad - Not bad
Blind Guardian - Another great band
Black Sabbath - never a big fan
Celtic Frost - Apart from Cold Lake, excellent
Children of Bodom - Pretty good
Cradle of Filth - Going downhill fatser with every album
Death - Older stuff was better
Rage - Seriously underrated. Peavey Wagner is a genius. 20 years of great music.
Dragonforce - Excellent
GWAR - Funny
Iced Earth - Good band
Finntroll - Good
Opeth - Ok
Tiamat - Preferred their older stuff, up until Wildhoney, then it got too lame.
Lost Horizon - Not bad
Metallica (older stuff... yes... naturally) Excellent
Rob Zombie/White Zombie - Shite.
Rage (not against the machine, just Rage) You already mentioned them. Fucking brilliant band. Go buy Soundchaser.
Savatage - Another good band whos best days are behind them
Slayer - Please don't let Kerry King write any more songs. Apart from that, c'mon..RIB.
System of a Down - Fuck off back to Armenia, or at least get into the ring with Billy Milano
Dog Fashion Disco - Heard more talented dogs.
Therion - Not bad
Amorphis - Another great band, though also getting a little too off kilter
Anthrax - Bring back Joey, Dan Spitz, and start playing thrash. You've done fuck all since 1990
Blood Duster - ok
Candlemass - Shame they've split up again
My Dying Bride - Older stuff better.
Six Feet Under - Shit. Cannibal Corpse kept Barnes for too long
Edguy - Not bad, have their moments
Einherjer - Pretty good
Judas Priest - What do you think? It's Priest, and Rapper Owens is gone!
Kataklysm - Excellent
Kamelot - Good
Manowar - Has their moments
Metal Church - Great band, first two albums are essential.
MotÖrhead - Lemmy.
Nevermore - Warrel Dane should reform Sanctuary
Offspring (older albums) - Yawn
Orphaned Land - OK
Overkill - With Overkill, does exactly what it says on the CD. Almost 20 years of consistently good stuff.
Pantera - You mean Glamtera? 4 Glammy Poison/VH wannabe albums, 2 good albums, the rest boring as fuck.
Rage Against the Machine - Fuck you, I won't tidy my bedroom. Complete and utter crap.
Scorpions - Last thing I got from them was Savage Amusement. Too many fucking Berlin Wall ballads etc since.
Sentenced - These guys should speed up a little like the old days. Still bloody great band.
Testament - New album, please lads? Older stuff better
Rhapsody - Great band

Noiw other bands I can recommend. Lawnmower Deth, The Crown, Katatonia, Vio-lence, Forbidden, Death Angel, Dark Angel, Primordial, and a few more.

But then as I heard it more and more it began to irritate me more and more. Just the general sound not the individual song itself. Well the same thing happens with Bad Religion songs. Initially I like them, but after hearing them a couple of times they just irritate me.

Correction, Danzig GOT owned... What a homo...

DANZIG frontman Glenn Danzig allegedly got into a scuffle with NORTH SIDE KINGS singer and frequent SOULFLY collaborator Danny Marianinho following DANZIG's performance in Tuba City, Arizona Saturday night (July 3). The following is Marianinho's official statement regarding the incident, as sent to BLABBERMOUTH.NET:

"Before crazy rumors begin to spread I would like to explain what happened:

"NORTH SIDE KINGS (web site) were to play with DANZIG last night in Tuba City, Arizona. To make a long story short the whole show was a disaster and a few bands got bumped off. Mr. Danzig (or his management??) refused to push back the original scheduled time slot so NORTH SIDE KINGS and RAPID FIRE would have to play 'after' his set. Whatever — we agreed to play later because we drove 6 hours and didn't feel like going home without playing.

"Needless to say, as soon as DANZIG was finished, the venue turned on the lights and DANZIG's crew and the staging company began to take the stage apart almost instantly. I confronted Mr. Danzig backstage while he was signing autographs and told him I thought he was an asshole because of his 'rock star' attitude and no consideration towards the FEW other bands that got bumped off tonight. In a fit of rage he turned around and slammed me into the wall yelling 'Fuck you, motherfucker,' trying to be a big, tough guy in front of his fans. I, in self-defense, punched him in the face, knocking him out as he was attacking me again. He went down, bleeding from his mouth, eyes rolled back, and in shock that he got knocked to the floor so quickly.

"A friend happened to tape the entire incident and this is all documented. Many witnesses saw him attack me, and I did what any man would do.

"It was unfortunate that this went the way it did — and I hoped Glenn Danzig learned a valuable lesson tonight: Do not lay your hands on anyone unless you can handle what may happen.

"I apologize for nothing, except for the poor little kids that had to witness this big asshole get his ass kicked in a matter of seconds..."

Hahahahah, come on, coming from someone calling themselves Jello Biafra...haven't you heard "Saturday Night Holocaust"? Don't get me wrong, The DK's and RATM are two of my favorite bands ever, but well...that song is much more annoying than anything RATM did.

the white stripes are a horrible, horrible band.

Thats easy to say, but why do you think that? I think they're a welcome breath of fresh air, raw rock going back to its roots in a sea of mindless grunge-wannabe's like Creed and Nickelback and pop-"punk bands".

Yeah neither do I...

i think it because. . .
i believe the drummer girl to have no talent whatsoever, she barely manages to keep time. when i first saw them they were on at glastonbury and i laughed thinking, 'wow these will never get anywhere' because they were so awful, out of time and out of tune. also for their most recent album, they weren't even tight enough to record it themselves and had to hire in professional musicians. that is why they are a horrible, horrible 'band'.

if going back to its roots is to play instruments with little or no skill then it doesn't seem like a breath of fresh air to me.

I can sing and scream like ZDLR too. But that doesn't bother me, because the end music has passion and sounds good, even though it lacks melody even in the instrumental work. A nice thread that i'm finally getting around to posting in.

anyway to the list (edited to those i have an opinion on):
Iron Maiden: the daddies possibly my favourite band
Black Sabbath: well you can't really say anything bad about them but for soem reason i never got into them
Dragonforce: Whee dragon force, feel the power of our almighty cheesy widdleing of wonderfulness (yes i love them)
Lost Horizon: woohoo soemone else who has actually heard of this band!!!
Metallica (older stuff... yes... naturally): You know for soem reason i actually like some of the newer stuff (not St.angry crap) S&M is still one of my fav albums (it helped me get into rhapsody...)
Rob Zombie/White Zombie: haven't heard much beyond the sound track of NFS:underground but was cool
System of a Down (not metal... nu-metal I know I know don't yell at me): at first i ahd them down as new metal pish but then soemthing changed and now i love them
Therion: Ok nothing special not as cool as rhapsody
Anthrax: Ok i guess they were good supporting motorhead but they kind of lsot it with feel the noise (or what ever the rap song is)
Edguy: only time i heard of them was in the avantasia project which is pretty cool if more than a little cheesy
MotÖrhead (thanks a lot Bodies... but its capitalized...): still going and still getting better, i would have inferno down for album of the year
Offspring (older albums) (definately not metal... but they used to be my favorite band for too long for me to omit them now...): i love them and oddly is till like the new stuff i'm just odd i guess
Pantera: the suckiest bunch of sucks who ever sucked
Rage Against the Machine (kinda... I kinda like 'em... but meh... I know once again--not quite metal): the first band i really got into i now look back and wonder why
Rhapsody: The best ultra cheesy bunch of super cool people who make the best music in the world (appart from IM and motorhead).

Some additons off the top of my head:
hammerfall
Yngwie malmsteen: ok maybe not really metal but its easy to see where rhapody get some ideas from.
Dream theater: how many types of metal can we cram into each overly long and quite irritating song (i know as a maiden/dragonforce fan i ahve a check to maon about long tracks but Dt just take the piss).

Hammerfall.... hmm I dunno. The only song of theirs I've really listened to was "Let the Hammer Fall"

and... all I can say I wish they took away the chorus part where they sing "So let the hammer fall"

RE: Band with "E"--there used to be an obscure 80s thrash metal band called EXE, they were alright, my favorite song was "Seek and Destroy" (no, not that one, their own.)
RE: your list--contains some real gems, thank you especially for including Rage (twice :) ) saw them once about 5 am in a small club. They had been in a car crash or whatever, but finally showed up and actually played a full set for the remaining hardcore fans (about a dozen.) Too cool. They even played "Echoes of Evil" twice by request (from the guy was too drunk to remember they had already played it.)
Speaking of raw talent, I would like to add Death Angel, they are awesome in concert.

If you haven't checked out Killswitch Engage, I think they are one of the best bands to come around in a long time. They aren't as polished as the bigger acts like Slipknot. They still have a raw edge that makes them quite electrifying.

Machine Head, while not that hard, have some of the best lyrics and are one of the best bands to see live.

As for Mushroomhead, I love them too. They are kinda silly. I saw them in a tiny club a few months back and they played a really fun show.

In Flames slightly dislike.
Slipknot I hate now... they used to be okay in my book... but when I heard that stupid new song... with that video where they trash that house... damn that song has got to be the most annoying thing ever... and the fact that I finally found how stupid they look in those weird costumes didn't rise my opinion of them before I ever saw them.
Static X isn't that bad.
Lacuna Coil... hmm the name sounds familiar... I might have heard them before.

Now you've listed here relatively new bands for the most part... Why not go back and listen to some true classics that date back into the eighties? Or at least metal bands that aren't replayed over and over on MTV2 on Headbanger's Ball.

Well, since I lived through the 70's and 80's, I remember all of that music. I have most of the classics that I like, but I can't stand hair metal. I was much more into punk in the 80's and I really like the music that is coming out now that reflects the legacies of punk, metal, rock and industrial. I like the heavy bass and the speed of the drumming that you hear in the newer music. I will take Killswitch Engage over Maiden any day.

Amerigo, I'm pretty sure that you aren't older than dirt, but you sound like such an old stick in the mud. I can respect honestly not liking soemething. I just hope that you aren't stuck in th epast, because it's gonna get kinda lonely there.
Naw thats not to say I don't listen to more modern metal... it's just they're a lot more obscure...

And besides nothing wrong with being stuck in the past music wise...

It seems to me that you didn't bother to look at my complete list.

Strife is there.

At the very bottom.

Kinda hard to miss since its not in the middle.

But never heard of the other ones. Heard of Mushroomhead but haven't heard anything by them.

My bad. Guess my eyes must have blurred everything together by the time I got to the bottom of your list and misread it as something else.

E bands! Hard to go wrong...
Exodus - thrash legends
Entombed - Once the finest of death metal, and have rediscovered their balls
Exhorder - fucking HEAVY
The Exploited - OK, not metal, but worth a mention
Exit-13 - really heavy political/environemntal grindcore
Exciter - Old school power metal
Extreme Noise Terror - Preferred their older grind incarnation
Emperor - superior black metal art
Exhumed - great gore metal
Enslaved - Viking metal

Then there's shitty gay old Extreme. If ever a band DIDN'T live up to it's name...

Down
Vision of Disorder
Strife
Omniblank
Ultraspank
Mushroomhead

There's a good reason they haven't been mentioned. They're not metal.

Down - Stoner rock. Tiresome.
Vision of Disorder - Hardcore
Strife - sXe Hardcore. Best band you mention.
Omniblank - Not heard 'em, but I'm going to make a wild assumption from the name and say...nu-metal
Ultraspank - nu-metal
Mushroomhead - nu-metal

What about Lamb Of God, Zao, Reveille, Fear Factory, God Forbid, Machine Head, Killswitch Engage, Otep, Kittie, Amen, In Flames, From Autumn To Ashes, Demon Hunter, Eighteen Visions, Lacuna Coil, Slipknot, Static X.. I could go on and on..

Lamb Of God - Not bad. Modern thrash, but nothing amazing
Zao - shit on toast
Reveille - nu-metal shit
Fear Factory - Bring back Soul Of A New Machine...
God Forbid - dunno
Machine Head - sold out. Not worth shit now.
Killswitch Engage - nu-metal crap masquerading as "metalcore"
Otep - nu-metal crap
Kittie - nu-metal crap done by girls
Amen - deserved to get dropped
In Flames - sell out wussy shit
From Autumn To Ashes - dunno
Demon Hunter - dunno
Eighteen Visions - dunno
Lacuna Coil - girlie crap
Slipknot - nu-metal morons
Static X - nu-metal morons with really gay hair

I'm not sure why, but this really cracked me up. I think it was your critique of Static X that made me laugh so hard. You know what this reminds me of? My friends sitting around dissing on the evolution of punk. I know alot of people that would have been content to never have had SoCal surf punk or TexaCali cross into punk or have funk and punk merged by the Chili Peppers or Fishbone. Whenever something new and progressive came along, the older punks got pissed off and nostalgic for that same old math rock (1 2 3 4) formula that had become so overused. I always felt that change was good. It brings about unique sounds that stand out amid the status quo.

But that's the thing- bands like Static-X ARE the status quo. They strive to sound exactly like any one of hundreds of other bands. The only thing which sets them apart is a singer with an inverted mullet.

E bands -
El Dopa - heard them, liked them, but can't find their CD anywhere.
Earth - arguably grunge, but I think qualify as doom metal.
Extra Fancy - gay (as in homosexual, not in the way preteens use it) band.

Other notable mentions (that may have been mentioned already, apologies if they were):

Corrosion of Conformity
Dark Tranquillity
Dimmu Borgir
Repulsion (haven't heard them yet, but they're supposedly the forefathers of grindcore, which makes them worth a mention)
Suicidal Tendencies
Obituary
Death (R.I.P.)
Morbid Angel

Incidentally, Death Angel is thrash, not death metal.

I'll give you my opinion on these bands

Iron Maiden - annoying to listen to, way too cheesy

SYL - good

Blind Guardian - brilliant, my fave power metal band after Nightwish!

Black Sabbath - good guitar and bass, but crappy vocals and drums

Celtic Frost - I'm not much of a fan, but they were very important to metal

Children of Bodom - very cheap thrills; entertaining

Cradle of Filth - funny!

Death - mind-blowing

Iced Earth - OK

Finntroll - amusing, I like them

Opeth - my absolute favourite metal band, easily in my top 3 favourite bands overall

Tiamat - OK, but a bit boring

old Metallica - excellent, great intelligent thrash

Savatage - a bit too 80s-sounding, but good songs

Slayer - brutal, but also bland and amelodic

System of a Down - excellent

Therion - very good

Amorphis - OK

Anthrax - best 80s thrash band after Metallica, IMO

My Dying Bride - very good, very depressing

Judas Priest - too cheesy!

Kamelot - good songs, but samey

Manowar - vomitous

MotÖrhead - annoying; Lemmy can't sing

The Offspring - great band (well, used to be)

Pantera - crap, I hate the macho image and music

Rage Against the Machine - very good, but the songs are formulaic

Sentenced - boring; songs sound the same

Rhapsody - very funny!

No, Led Zeppelin is without a doubt the creators of metal. They laid the foundations for the genre, and Black Sabbath built upon it. This was all done within a very short time span though, so I respect your opinion regarding Black Sabbath.

Of course. Black Sabbath's sound is metal, even now in the genre's very broad range of variations. Yet you have to think back to circa-1970. Rock, although going through a period of change, remains widely, how should I say this, 'light' (For lack of a better term). Then you hear Led Zep, and such songs as Whole Lotta Love and Dazed and Confused. Compared to every single other band out at that point, nothing was as heavy or as controversial as Zep. In today's music, Led Zeppelin is definately Classic Rock, yet during their prime they were metal(not called metal at the time, but you get the idea).

On one hand I see your point, but on the other, I don't think that simply being heavier than what came before makes something heavy metal.
Rhacyn
11-08-2004, 08:44
Which is why I admitted to Led Zeppelin being Classic Rock in today's age. Yet there is no doubt in my mind that if the notion of a 'metal' genre existed during the 70's, Led Zeppelin would be at the helm.

Iron Maiden- Legends, although "Dance Of Death" wasn't amazing.
Strapping Young Lad- I have issues with Devin Townsend, and this band in general...
Black Sabbath- They started it all, so you can't say anything bad.
Children of Bodom- Not a huge fan, but I don't really hate them either.
Cradle of Filth- See above.
GWAR- Funny idea but the songs need work.
Iced Earth- Better with Matt Barlow, but they're still good.
Opeth- They can get a little much, but they're good.
Metallica (older stuff... yes... naturally)- Well, the only album I hated was "St. Anger".
Rob Zombie/White Zombie- *thumbs up* Nu-metal should follow his lead.
Slayer- *thumbs up* Legends...need I say more?
System of a Down- Yet another pace-setter for nu-metal.
Dog Fashion Disco- OK...nothing spectacular.
Amorphis- *thumbs up*, even though I only know one song.
Anthrax- Good, but not great.
Six Feet Under- *pukes*
Judas Priest- Simply OK. I don't really like Rob Halford that much...his voice doesn't suit my style.
Manowar- *thumbs way up* One of the funniest bands out there
Offspring (older albums) (definately not metal... but they used to be my favorite band for too long for me to omit them now...)- I still like them...I don't ever think they missed a beat.
Overkill- One of Canada's best contributions to metal.
Pantera- OK.
Rage Against the Machine- They were a little too vague at times, but I liked them.

As for bands you missed: Dimmu Borgir and Lacuna Coil. They're two of my favourite bands.

I have to say, most of the bands I don't know. I'll write about what I do know.

Anthrax - Pretty good, been in the buisness forever, I respect them for that
Iron Maiden - Good band, not the best, but good never then less
Black Sabbath - I'm a die hard Ozzy fan, so I like Sabbath naturally. However, in the old days, Tony Ioami was a screwed up the band by being a control freak. Vocals and drums were a bit weak, but consider the recording methods of the day.
GWAR - Never heard their songs, but I have a book on heavy metal. Costums were absolutly ridiculous, but funny.
Metallica - Metallica was good. Good riffs and solos, good words. However, things changed after the album "Metallica" and it kind of went down hill.
Rob Zombie/White Zombie - I'm more familar with White Zombie, but in both cases, meh.
Slayer - Ok, not my favorites.
System of a Down - Not my style of music, too contemporary. However, I like their politics
Judas Priest - Love them, Rob Halford's voice is definatly different, though. They lost a lot of steam after the album Turbo, but considering it was suposed to be the sound track for Top Gun (that I got from another NS user.)
MotÖrhead - Great band, absolutly great.

Led Zep was great. They were a hard band and were revolutionary for their time. However, I wouldn't say they are true metal. Yes, they might have paved the way and broke ground, but they were too blues-like in their vocals and guitars (which isn't a bad thing.)

I'm in a unique situation, though. My mother and sister were big metal heads in the 1980's, so I grew up on 80's hair metal and rock, primarily since I am in very close proximity to the Sunset Strip in Hollywood.

Let me deal with this lot for Amerigo.
Soil - Creed minus the bibles
Static X - Gay hair, gay nu-metal
KMFDM - German electronic artists a bit difficult to label, but definitely not metal.
taproot - Nu-metal
powerman 5000 - Rob Zombie's younger, less talented brother. Nu-metal
Otep - Nu-Metal
sevendust - Rap rock
NIN - are to Industrial what Bon Jovi is to metal and Avril Lavigne is to punk
Dream Theatre - the only metal band mentioned. Progressive metal, and a bit of an acquired taste.
Cave in - Sold out hardcore
Adema - Nu-metal

If you're not sure if something is metal or not, go here:

I've never been much for pigeonholing music - as long as it's good, loud and got an aggressive rythm, I don't much care if it's metal, punk, industrial, rock or even dance - "Where's Your Head At" by Basement Jaxx is an awesome track, for example...

My musical evolution went something like this:

0-11: Listened to any Top 40 pop crap
12: Heard AC/DC's TNT album - turned my back on pop music forever
13-20: Listened exclusively to hard rock and metal. Started with hard rock, then straight forward metal, then thrash and some grindcore
21-nowish: Got into alternative music as well as metal (punk, industrial, goth, indie, hardcore, and even some hiphop and dance)
Right now: My favourite styles right at the moment are industrial and stoner metal

My all time faves - Misfits/Danzig, Ministry, Slayer, Rollins Band, Judas Priest...

Can't speak to any of these but three (though I recognize many more band names)...one I am VERY passionate about.

Black Sabbath: Not into them much, but what I've heard I like. So far all I own is the compilation "We Sold Our Soul for Rock And Roll". Probably my favorite songs on it are "Iron Man" and "Sabbath Bloody Sabbath".

Opeth: I LOVE OPETH. Yeah, I know, I must sound like a fangirl, but they honestly are one of my very favorite bands of all time...and I'm not even much of a metal fan (more classic rock for me). My Arms, Your Hearse and Damnation I love equally, and the rest of their albums are pretty good too, even though Orchid and Morningrise are rough. Everybody should at least give Opeth a try, even if you think you'll hate the growled vocals. Their clean vocals are great, and once you're used to the growls, it's very good, rich music, and some of the albums are even concept albums. Their lyrics will not put anybody off, I don't think...this is not the savage drivel some metal bands are fond of. Blackwater Park makes a good starting point if you're new to metal. If you're already OK with metal, I recommend starting with MAYH. Trust me, you won't regret it.

Metallica (older stuff... yes... naturally): I only like one thing by Metallica: the S & M concert with Maestro Michael Kamen (bless his soul). I'm a huge classical nut, and I truly loved the fusion of classical to metal. Interestingly enough, it was actually Michael's idea to do this! :)

Just because YOU don't like them doesn't make them a bad band. Others have a right to their opinion, even if it clashes with yours. It's not harming you that some of us like Opeth.

The opposite is also true.

I'm seeing Killswitch Engage, From Autumn To Ashes, Kittie, 36 Crazy Fists, atreyu and some other band, I think its eighteen visions, this week, in two seperate concerts

I saw Killswitch Engage when they supported Anthrax on a recent tour to Australia - they were really good live, IMHO. Saw Soilwork on the same night - they were OK, but not great - (again, IMHO).

Anthrax were freakin' awesome - it was the first time I'd seen them since John Bush joined (I last saw them on the P.O.T tour), but they really surprised me. I guess I got into it more because it was a much smaller venue...not to mention that they did an AC/DC cover as an encore. Great show. ;)

Well the fact that so many people are claiming Opeth to be the best metal band ever, really annoys me... and probably other metal fans... I mean... I like Opeth... but damn... come on....

Nowhere did I say they are "the best", although I think they are highly talented. I said they are my favorite, which they always will be, I think.

Incidentally, I recently heard The End of All Heartache (Killswitch Engage) for the first time, and liked it. Maybe even enough to buy it...we'll see!

OK, if we're talking about "metal" that sucks, let me just say - The Rasmus! These guys blow major goats nuts.

It's like someone took a bunch of prats who were at a fancy dress party as extras from "The Crow" and said "Hey, wanna be in a band?".

The singer looks like a (slightly more) male version of Bjork, and their sound makes me want to puke - it's like N-Sync meets Linkin Park...

Sothern California...

My Dying Bride (as far as I know) is getting more popular over here...

Well as popular as the more modern true metal metal can get.... and still stay pure and not get whored to the masses.

My forecast is that Opeth is getting too much of a young adult/teenage fanbase that it is bound to sell out in a couple of years and start sounding like Slipknot or nu-Metallica.

You didn't others did. Too many others did.

It's frustrating to see that.... very.... frustrating. On one hand Opeth is metal and not something as absurd as Slipknot. On the other hand Opeth is surely not the apex of metal... not that close either... And yeah...

Iron Maiden
Blind Guardian
Iced Earth
Rhapsody

I quoted the ones that I heard of that I also happen to like.

Iron Maiden. I havent heard much of this stuff, but I like what I heard

Blind Guardian. I enjoy this group. I own Nightfall in middle Earth and a Night at the Opera.

Iced Earth. i like the old singer, especially in the song question of heaven. I own the Glorious Burden, and while I still like the music, I think the singer sounds too much like Petra if you ask me.

Rhapsody. I like the music in this group, the vocalist and lyrics I think could improve, but the music is great.

Saviour Machine. That is a Group that you didnt mention. while they are not "metal" per se, a lot of people who are into metal enjoy them.

Also, I know that the group is not considered metal, but I am also a fan of Dream Theater, for the music, and song titles.

Well its the bass player's from Overkill project... So if you never listened to Overkill its doubtful you'd like 'em... although Bronx Casket Co is of a different genre than overkill... but if you never listened to goth/doom metal... You should definately not bother with finding 'em... ya probably wont like em.

Iron Maiden: Simply awesome. Their new album is one of their best IMHO
Blind Guardian: Very good, if a tad nerdy.
Black Sabbath: Revolutionary at the time, their music is still some of the best around.

Celtic Frost: they're pretty cool
Children of Bodom: Very good, though the lyrics and vocals could use some work

Cradle of Filth: Love this band. Hopefully "Nymphetamine" will be better than Damnation, though...

Death: they suck
Dragonforce: Very good, very talented band.
Iced Earth: Amazing, their album about Gettysburg deserves particular praise.
Opeth: I like some of their stuff, dislike some of it. Most of the time they're good.

Metallica (older stuff... yes... naturally): incredible. too bad they've sucked so bad lately

Rob Zombie/White Zombie: mostly crap
Savatage: These guys are pretty cool.
Slayer: Basically a faster, more brutal, but way less advanced and way more crappy version of metallica.

System of a Down (not metal... nu-metal I know I know don't yell at me): They're good sometimes

Anthrax: Great band. Some people actually wanted them to change their name after the whole anthrax scare.

My Dying Bride: Incredible band! One of my all time favorites. "She is the Dark" is a great song.

Judas Priest: Pretty cool
Manowar: strange
Metal Church: Very good band, not exactly my thing though
MotÖrhead (thanks a lot Bodies... but its capitalized...): they're cool if a bit repetative.

Offspring: not really metal
Pantera: rednecks
Rage Against the Machine (kinda... I kinda like 'em... but meh... I know once again--not quite metal): like everything except the vocalist

Scorpions (only mentioned because of the song The Zoo--and in my humble opinion Iron Maiden greatly improved it when they covered it): lame

Sentenced (I gotta admit a lot of their songs sound alike... especially in the chorus): They're cool, saw them live once.

Testament: another great band
Rhapsody: pretty good.

First I took out the bands that werent metal Sorry but SOAD are nothing more than terrorist hypocrite jerks who are anti-semetic and anti-Turk.

Most of the bands you listed are quite good. You didnt really list any goth ones though.

Within Temptation
After Forever
Tristania
old The Gathering(later stuff is great though)
Moonspell

get the idea?

Also, why so little black metal? I would expect at least Bathory or Emperor.

Cradle of Filth shouldnt be on the list of those other great bands. they are such a piece of overproduced garbage. Dimmu is the same.

no Nightwish? I guess people dont like her vocal style.

no Katatonia yet you have sentenced??!!!!!

Darkane? Dark Tranquillity? Although i give you props for not listing In Flames.

Overall you got a nice selection of metal bands. All I gotta say is...PPPPPPPPPAAAAAIIIINNNKKKKIIILLLLEEERRR!

(Bands I never heard of snipped)

Iron Maiden - Never quite cared for them all that much
Black Sabbath - Good stuff, really good stuff, probably the biggest inspiration in metal of all time
Cradle of Filth - I can't take them seriously
GWAR - at least they're funny
Metallica (older stuff... yes... naturally) - beautiful heavy music
Rob Zombie/White Zombie - I likes, but it's boring to play on guitar
Savatage - I used to like them, are they still around?
Slayer - I never cared much for Slayer, not quite sure what it is
System of a Down - high weirdness factor mixed with much harshness, i kinda like that
Anthrax - I like, including the rap
Judas Priest - eck, I don't get why they're so great
Metal Church - don't remember hearing them, but I have heard of them :p
MotÖrhead - my favorite metal band to come out between Black Sabbath and Metallica
Offspring - high energy music, good if your in that sort of mood
Pantera - probably my favorite band of all time
Rage Against the Machine - good stuff, it all fit together pretty good
Scorpions - I used to like them, but I'm not really sure why

SOAD... anti-Turk... yes partly... since the Turkish government still won't admit that there WAS an Armenian genocide... but anti-semetic? Where did that come form... And I did warn you that they were nu-metal.

Tristania is pretty good, and I almost put it upthere... but I don't like Tristania that much... and I havent heard that many songs by them....

Personally I don't really like goth metal that much, although I've heard all the goth bands you've listed. Same goes with black metal... except a select few.

Cradle of Filth has its moments I'll just say. Don't think I consider them one of the best, but I find some of their songs, enjoyable nonetheless.

Nightwish... Pretty good, but meh... Can't say I truly like 'em.

Well I don't think I've heard Katatonia... and Sentenced well... I don't know Sentenced well enough..... I mean like them, but I'm not really a fan.

Darkane and DarkTranquility I don't think I've heard.

Only just seen this request. I'd been avoiding the list because there have been a lot of retards who know nothing about metal posting their "opinions", but anyway...

Iron Maiden - The lords and masters! If you don't like Maiden, then you don't like metal.
Bronx Casket Company (don't bother answering this one because there's no way you've heard of them) You're quite right. Never heard of them until now.
Strapping Young Lad - Great modern thrash, although I don't quiote understand why everyone sucks Devin's dick like they do.
Blind Guardian - Cheesetastic! Love their stuff, from the old thrash days through to the power metal of today.
Black Sabbath - Without whom there'd be no metal etc.
Celtic Frost - Fucking brilliant. Amazing riffs, amazing songs. Final album Vanity/Nemesis is way underrated.
Children of Bodom - ZZzzz... Fluffy bunny slippers
Cradle of Filth - Lots of fun. Love their style, just don't ever confuse it with Black Metal
Death - Brilliant band, from the raw death of the early days to the mindblowing technicality of the later stuff.
Rage - Love 'em! Old school German thrash.
Dragonforce - Just listening to 'em earlier. Cream of the current power metal crop.
Ensiferum - Don't know this band.
GWAR - Good idea, just not always that well executed. If you ever come across their fanclub at Bohab Central, avoid them- they're such dickheads even the band don't like them
Haggard - Dunno
Iced Earth - Good stuff.
Finntroll - Brilliant band! Finland seems to produce the good ones.
Opeth - Dull as fuck.
Tiamat - Brilliant.
Lost Horizon - Dunno
Metallica (older stuff... yes... naturally) - Well, Metallica's Metallica.
Rob Zombie/White Zombie - Love the old White Zombie stuff, and Rob's solo stuff is good fun.
Rage (not against the machine, just Rage) - Invisiiiiiible horiiiiizoooons!
Savatage - Interesting, but not outstanding.
Sirenia - Dunno
Slayer - the fucking GODS!
System of a Down (not metal... nu-metal I know I know don't yell at me) - Next...
Dog Fashion Disco (semi-metal... more nu-metal also) - A heavier, more intelligent version of Ugly Kid Joe.
Therion - Brilliant stuff
Amorphis - Same again- brilliant.
Anthrax - Love them.
Blood Duster - Love these guys. Real sickos.
Candlemass - Fucking heavy and very under appreciated
My Dying Bride - Amazing atmosphere. THIS is what darkness and doom is about, not Marilyn fucking Manson.
Six Feet Under - Generic shit.
Edguy - Dunno
Einherjer - Dunno
Judas Priest - Without Priest there'd be no thrash
Kataklysm - Amazing, especially the early stuff. Northern hyperblast!
Kamelot - Dunno
Manowar - Wimps and Posers, leave the hall!
Metal Church - Fuck yeah!
MotÖrhead (thanks a lot Bodies... but its capitalized...) - Without Lemmy, there'd be no... well, lots of things.
Nevermore - Proof that Power Metal doesn't have to be about Dungeons and Dragons shit.
Offspring (older albums) (definately not metal... but they used to be my favorite band for too long for me to omit them now...) - I love The Offspring, so I'm not going to deny it either.
Orphaned Land - heard a couple of tracks. Sounded OK.
Overkill - Rotten to the core! Er, that's a good thing...
Pantera - I don't like Vulgar Display Of Power or Far Beyond Driven, but everything else is great. Except Phil, because he's a drunken idiot.
Rage Against the Machine (kinda... I kinda like 'em... but meh... I know once again--not quite metal) - Gay, overrated, and complete shit.
Scorpions (only mentioned because of the song The Zoo--and in my humble opinion Iron Maiden greatly improved it when they covered it) - A bit pedestrian, but then they're pretty old...
Sentenced (I gotta admit a lot of their songs sound alike... especially in the chorus) - dunno. Keep meaning to download this band, but keep forgetting.
Shaman - Dunno.
Testament - Their old stuff blows. The new sound is far, far better.
Rhapsody - Yeah! Cheese sandwich!
Strife - Strange addition to the list, but I love full on hardcore.

Actually, you might appreciate this Amerigo.

Scene: The Citadel of Nu-Metal war room. The War Cabinet is sitting. Things are looking grim. The assembly is in an uproar. Someone is crying.

Jonathon Davis: (Bangs gavel) Order, order dudes! Chester, stop crying!
Chester Bennington: I can’t help it. *sob* We haven’t gone gold in outer Mongolia.
Davis: (Rolls eyes) Back to the matter at hand, gentle-dudes. Our plans for world domination are well at hand. We have brainwashed millions of teens worldwide into accepting our message and our musical mediocrity. We own the airwaves, the record stores, most of the festivals and a majority of the media. (Applause from the assembly.) However, we’ve discovered a few pockets of resistance. We’ve recently become aware of this, this… abomination! (Points at the Manowar album lying on the table. On the front cover is a muscle-bound warrior, bloodied sword in one hand, demon head in the other. Scantily clad maidens and imps surround the warrior. It is titled “The Hell Of Steel”.) This, this… THING goes against all we hold True… I mean Nu! If it gets out, it will upset the Nu-World Order! We must find a way to combat it! Does anyone have any ideas?
Joey Jordison: I like his mask.
Max Cavalera: Let’s fuck shit up motherfuckers!
Jon: Now, you say that all the time Max. What exactly do you mean by “fucking shit up”?
Max: Well, I fucked Sepultura up didn’t I?
David Draiman: (From under the table) He’s right you know. Sepultura used to be True, but then they went Nu.
Jon: Dave, why are you under the table?
David: I’m not. I have to keep my head down here because I got my chin piercings caught in my wallet chain.
Coby Dick: I feel your pain, dude.
Chester: (Inspecting lyric sheet): These lyrics are weird. There’s nothing about how the world is tough and girls can mess you around and how homework is bad for teenagers. It’s all icky stuff about demons and fighting. It’s enough to make your hair stand on end!
Wayne Static: Did someone call?
David: (Still under the table) Ha! And they call themselves Heavy Metal! Hey, someone’s been sticking bubblegum under here.
Jon: They even had Orson Welles do a monologue for them. How are we supposed to better this?
David: Mmm, strawberry flavour! Um, you could play the bagpipes again.
Chino Moreno: We could tell them to shove it, SHOVE IT, (screams) SHOVE IIIIT!!!
Jon: What would that achieve? And pull your fucking pants up!
Chino: I dunno, but it helped us sell a lot of records.
Joey: Ha! These idiots call their drumkit the Drums Of Doom. Can their drumkit fly? I think not!
Jon: But have you actually heard them? Their drummer actually knows how to keep a beat!
(A collective gasp is heard around the room)
Joey: (very quietly) We’re in trouble…
Coby: I feel your pain, dude.
Max: We need to fuck shit up!
Everyone else: Shut up, Max!
Chester: One of these songs is all funny. I can’t read it.
Jon: You should have tried harder in remedial English. Let me see. (Looks at lyrics sheet) This is in German. This is worse than I thought! Germans love True Metal. These guys have multi-lingual appeal!
Dez Fafara: I know Gibberish. Do you think it would help if we released a song written in Gibberish?
Jon: It doesn’t seem to have helped so far. Um, is that Rammstein dude still here?
Till Lindemann: Ja.
Jon: Can you read this for us?
Till: Nein. Scheissen, actung Volkswagen!
Fred: Let’s call Ozzy and ask him if we can do Ozzfest all year round then. He’s Metal, so if we play with him, we’re Metal by association.
Dez: (Raps tunelessly) “Drop the money, you gotta drop the money!” I did a song with Ozzy once.
Jon: It was “Drop the MONKEY” you idiot. I don’t think Ozzy would go for it. He has to take the dogs to the vet.
Chino: Kelly and Sharon aren’t THAT ugly.
Fred: Then let’s call Marilyn Manson and ask him if we can do Ozzfest all year round.
(Everyone stares at Fred)
Jon: Fred, we’ve been through this before. Ozzfest is Ozzy’s festival, not Marilyn’s. That’s why it’s not called Manifest.
Chester: Why are there only four of them? They haven’t got anyone to do their samples or scratching or rapping.
Jon: I don’t know.
Max: I know why! They do these things called solos! I did one once, back in 1989! It hurt my fingers.
Wayne: Fingers? You mean you used more than one finger to play a chord?
Max: Yeah, and we used to use more than three chords in a song too, but I used to leave most of them up to Andreas.
Wayne: More than three chords? What a waste!
Fred: What about the rapping? Can they bust a rhyme, sublime, in time, like mine?
Jon: I don’t know. Perhaps we should listen to it.
Chester: I don’t know about that, it might be scary…
Coby: I feel your pain, dude.
Max: Let’s fuck shit up!
(Various objects are thrown at Max)
Everyone else: SHUT UP MAX!
Jon places the disc in the stereo and turns it on. Suddenly, the earsplitting boom of “Fighting The World” bursts forth from the speakers. Dust and plaster starts to fall from the ceiling. The cabinet members all dive for cover under the table, except David, who is already there. Chester starts crying again, while Fred starts whining. The walls tremble. Larger pieces of debris fall from the ceiling. Four mighty horsemen crash through the wall, armed with a sword of steel, a battle axe, a spiked club and a mighty hammer of war. The Nu-Metallers are momentarily struck dumb by the sight of the Metal Kings, before begging for their lives. The Metal Kings show no mercy, and slay all without hesitation, while the Citadel collapses into a pile of rubble.

The dust clears as the finals strains of “Master Of The Wind” trail off. A lone figure struggles from the wreckage. It is Max. His dreadlocks have fallen off, replaced by a mullet, and his piercings have disappeared. He pulls a phone from his pocket.
Max: Hello, Igor? This is Max. Wanna get the band back together and do a ‘Beneath The Remains’ anniversary tour? Yeah, I think I’m cured.

Bronx Casket Company (don't bother answering this one because there's no way you've heard of them) You're quite right. Never heard of them until now.

It's the bassist from Overkill's side project... Damn whats his name... It's on the tip of my tongue... Verni or something... Well you probably know who I'm talking about...

Ensiferum - Don't know this band.
It's part of that tiny genre labeled by some to be Viking Metal... They're pretty new but they have an interesting sound.

Haggard - Dunno
They're symphony metal... or whatever you'd call that... Interesting fusion of classical and metal... a strangely more of death-doom sounding metal...

My Dying Bride - Amazing atmosphere. THIS is what darkness and doom is about, not Marilyn fucking Manson.
Very true.

Testament - Their old stuff blows. The new sound is far, far better.
Really? I love their early stuff...

Strife - Strange addition to the list, but I love full on hardcore.
Well its the only hardcore band that I've heard that I actually liked... Know of some that would probably suit my tastes?

Oh and I forgot Einherjer and Sirenia. They are very good band with very distinct sounds... Einherjer is what I would say has a lot of power metal influence, very much so in the lyrics, and yet has some strange distinctness in their sound that some songs are kind of slow sounding... that vaguely remind me of doom metal.

Sirenia is one of those bands that experiments with a lot of other instruments... (it might be all keyboards but hey they sound damn good)... has a lot of the medieval age type chanting chorus type vocalization.... I don't really know what genre they fall under... They sound like a mix of things... But I highly reccomend them.

Iron Maiden: Aye,very good band. A bit overrated

Blind Guardian: Love them,First metal band i digged. Nightfall is lovely!

Black Sabbath: Gotta love them,i prefet the Dio-era;Heaven and hell, Mob rules, Dehumanizer. H&H best metal album ever?

Cradle of Filth: Some of it is okay. I dont like what they've done aftrer Midian, by then I was pretty tired of Dani's voice.

Iced Earth: Not heard too much of them but they seem OK.

Opeth: Pretty good, one of the few death bands i like, also one of the few prog bands i like too :D

Metallica (older stuff... yes... naturally): Okay.

Sirenia: Not too much my cup of tea, but i can dig it.

Slayer: Dont like them at all.

System of a Down (not metal... nu-metal I know I know don't yell at me): Aye,not metal, but probably the only nu-metal band i can listen to.

Candlemass: Love them!

Einherjer: Love them even more! Best viking metal band ever, too bad they disbanded.

Judas Priest: Goes without saying, this band is one of the kings of metal.

Kamelot: One of the first metal bands i loved, got me into the genre(along with Dio,Iron maiden and Blind Guardian) I love this band.

Manowar: They're actually posers! But still, they rock!

Rage Against the Machine (kinda... I kinda like 'em... but meh... I know once again--not quite metal) First band I ever digged actually, and i still do after 10 years.

Shaman: Are we talking about the Brazilian band or the Finish? If the one from Br, I kinda like Angra more. If Fi, They rock in a weird way.

Rhapsody: The newest albums are TOO much, still, its the band i play on RPG-sessions.

The Finnish one...

Don't think I've heard the Brazilian one... although I've heard OF them.

And Iron Maiden can never be overrated enough!

Also I am glad I found somebody who likes Black Sabbath more in the Dio era... and actually thinks like I do that Heaven and Hell was their best...

The strange thing is I don't like Dio's solo thing... nor Rainbow...

You dont like his solostuff nor Rainbow!? No doubt Holy Diver is one of the best heavy metal albums ever, maybe not as good as H&H but its a killer album!
And the Rainbow-part is my favourite, Blackmore is the best guitarist Dio has ever worked with, and all three albums plus the live are great!
But its not metal, thats for sure. Maybe I just like them because I prefer chill music most of the time now, and really enjoys Blackmore's guitarsolos.

My "chill" music is doom metal... and/or that incredible cover of The Zoo done by Iron Maiden... But that one is actually probably more my rock out music...

And Dio... well I just don't get into Holy Diver... I mean I see thats its pretty good... but somehow it is contrary to my tastes.

More like Strife... Hatebreed is the obvious big name, although they're kind of tedious- heard one song, heard 'em all. All Out War would be worth a try, Integrity, Earth Crisis (as long as you don't get their later nu-metal shit), Merauder, Fury Of Five, perhaps Blood For Blood (my current favourite), Madball, maybe Agnostic Front if you don't mind a bit of old school.

It surprised me that you'd appreciate Strife, because most metal fans can't get past the Straight Edge posturing. It's never bothered me at all, but some people don't like it.

"Dream theater: how many types of metal can we cram into each overly long and quite irritating song (i know as a maiden/dragonforce fan i ahve a check to maon about long tracks but Dt just take the piss). "

is a complete and utter twat- ooo oh no just because you cant sit through a piece of goddamn music longer than some shitty punk-pop song- dream theater are one of the greatest metal bands of today- i dare you to listen to Metropolis part 2 and disagree with me. I think most of these bands are pretty good. Although I am not big on the whole metal music. I like System of a down and metallica the best on this list. Metallica is god band of metal. They are definately the best and most known. I saw them in concert in Chicago and they rocked the stage. It was an amazing set. Lars Ulrich is by far one of the best drummers ever. Good music but most the other is bullshit that is just nothing but screaming and pounding on the drums and whatever.. But I can't :headbang: unless I'm in that type of pissed off mood.. It definately gets the anger and frustration out of me.. haha.. and system of a down is just an unbelievable band. They definately have one of the best drummers. Can u tell I like the drums? haha. I am actually learning to play guitar.. It's nice to know different genres of music .. i think it helps you out when u wanna make ur own music. But hell do I ever know what I'm talking about?? More like Strife... Hatebreed is the obvious big name, although they're kind of tedious- heard one song, heard 'em all. All Out War would be worth a try, Integrity, Earth Crisis (as long as you don't get their later nu-metal shit), Merauder, Fury Of Five, perhaps Blood For Blood (my current favourite), Madball, maybe Agnostic Front if you don't mind a bit of old school.

It surprised me that you'd appreciate Strife, because most metal fans can't get past the Straight Edge posturing. It's never bothered me at all, but some people don't like it.
Ok I'll be sure to try and find some songs by the ones you mentioned... Thanks.

Have to disagree about Prong - your description certainly matches their earlier stuff, but their later albums, (especially Cleansing) is pretty much straight thrash/power metal...
Speaking of Prong I'm starting to get into their music... They are pretty good... ALthough I think I've heard only songs from the later albums.

Someone posted a "Fantasy Band" thread.

Here's is my ultimate band lineup (for my tastes, anyway):

Vocals: Glenn Danzig (Danzig, Samhain, Misfits)
Guitar: Kerry King (Slayer)
Guitar: Jairo T (Sepultura)
Bass: Joey DeMaio (Manowar)
Drums: Dave Lombardo (Slayer, Manowar)
Yours actually sorta makes sense... Mine would never have worked... :( Too many genres merged together that are very VERY conflicting...

But whatever...
Bruce Dickinson--vocals
Tony Iommi and Alex Skolnick--guitar
Chuck Schuldiner (RIP)---bass
Scott Travis-- drums
