Harry Potter Help Needed

I don't know where a Harry Potter message board is, so I am posting this here, since I know there are Harry Potter fans here.

I've read the first three books, but that was a while ago, and after seeing the movies, I have some questions. I noticed a few plot holes I wanted to ask about

In the Sorceror's Stone, what prompts Harry to go ask Hagrid about the man who gave him the dragon egg? Because in the movie, he just randomly goes up and does it.

In the Chamber of Secrets, the Chamber's entrance was in the girl's bathroom, around the sinks. But they said Salazar Slytherin built it before he left Hogwart's, roughly 1000 years ago. There is no way indoor plumbing existed that long ago, so what is the deal?

And finally, what prompted Harry to write "My name is Harry Potter" in the diary containing Voldemort's memory? How could he know to do that?

And just a quick question: In the Chamber of Secret's, was Voldemort the same person as seen in the Sorceror's Stone, or was his sixteen-year old self a seperate entity?

Thanks for the help! Oh, and no spoilers for books 4 and 5 please! I haven't read those yet.

Well remember they thought voldemort was running around. They thought it was rather strange that a guy happened to have something Hagrid always wanted so he wanted to talk to him about it.

What he found out was that he gave up Fluffys achilles heal.

In the Chamber of Secrets, the Chamber's entrance was in the girl's bathroom, around the sinks. But they said Salazar Slytherin built it before he left Hogwart's, roughly 1000 years ago. There is no way indoor plumbing existed that long ago, so what is the deal?

Magic buddy. Magic. Remember it was a portal and there are many things they don't know about the castle....

And finally, what prompted Harry to write "My name is Harry Potter" in the diary containing Voldemort's memory? How could he know to do that?

I think it was simply to start a dialogue.....

And just a quick question: In the Chamber of Secret's, was Voldemort the same person as seen in the Sorceror's Stone, or was his sixteen-year old self a seperate entity?

Entity. Residue memories.

Spoilers!

Ok the butler did it in the dinning room with the candlestick.

The books get bigger and bigger as she goes.

They get better IMHO.

Actually, it's not random in the movie either. Hagrid had already said he won the egg gambling. Harry just realized that most people wouldn't just be carrying around a dragon egg and anyone who knew anything about Hagrid would know to offer him exotic animals to get information.

In the Chamber of Secrets, the Chamber's entrance was in the girl's bathroom, around the sinks. But they said Salazar Slytherin built it before he left Hogwart's, roughly 1000 years ago. There is no way indoor plumbing existed that long ago, so what is the deal?

It's magic! Besides, there would have at least been basins there to hold water. Seriously though, the answer is probably that the author didn't really worry about time issues because the magic world is very different from the muggle world anyways. You could just as soon say "Why don't the wizards drive cars and wear spandex instead of robes when they play Quiditch - we have those things now."

Also, there was an ancient society (I want to say they even predated the Roman empire) that had indoor plumbing. So maybe Hogwarts learned it from them.

And finally, what prompted Harry to write "My name is Harry Potter" in the diary containing Voldemort's memory? How could he know to do that?

It was probably the first thing that came to mind when he found a journal-type book. He didn't know it had anyone's memory, he just decided to write something.

And just a quick question: In the Chamber of Secret's, was Voldemort the same person as seen in the Sorceror's Stone, or was his sixteen-year old self a seperate entity?

He was the 16-year old version of Voldemort kept in the book. It's kind of like if you could trap your 4-year old essence in a book so it could come back at a later time. It is the same person, but not really.

They get better IMHO.That was always the idea, that the standard of the books would advance as her readers age (IE: the first book is pitched for 9-10 year olds, the second for 11-12 year olds and so on.)

To answer your questions:
1. Nobody really knows, because in the book he also just "happens" to realize that the guy from the bar could be someone evil.
2. Good question, that was obviously something J.K. Rowling didn't consider, so I'm thinking....magic.
3. Lucky guess?
4. Separate entity.

1) They forget it in the movie, but in the book owning a dragon is illegal in Britain. Harry gets suspicious that a guy in a bar would just happen to be carrying an illegal dragon egg on him, and that it just happens to be something that Hagrid has always wanted.

2) I guess magic let wizards have sinks a thousand years ago.

3) In the book, Harry's bag rips and ink gets all over his stuff. Everything is covered in ink except the journal. Harry experiments with it and realizes the book just absorbs all the ink. And so he just tries saying hello.

4) Tom in the Chamber is Voldemort at 16. Tom made put a shadow of his personality in the book so a little bit of him could live forever.

Actually, the Roman Empire had indoor plumbing and a very extensive sewage system. Thank you History Channel!

Ok, seems everyone has answered questions 1, 3, and 4.

So here is one for answer 2.

The HP Lexicon someone gave goes over the possibilities for that specific question, as well as many others raised in the reading of HP.

The most basic answer is that when the castle was built, the bathrooms existed in some form or another (as they have for a few centuries at least). What changed was the actual devices in the bathrooms, being the addition of sinks, and toilets.

The next part about the sign of Slytherin on the sink involves pure trust and little thought about the intricacies of plumbing.
