If threads that have been gravedug (?) are locked, why are threads which have been inactive for x amount of months, say, automatically deleted?

Admins do, do forum purges often to help keep the server going.. but when some one brings up a thread that hasn't been discussed in 2 weeks/2 months.. etc.. we consider this grave digging and lock it.

I've been meaning to look up the proper place to post this, but since the last post here was a Mod, hopefully this will do without offence...

On this particular forum we have HUNDREDS of pages of threads...

WOW! I just looked at the oldest pages and there's really nothing there... what a waste of server space! I was thinking there were tons of old threads just sitting around there, forbidden to be "gravedug". So there's less waste than there could be, but still...

And howcomeisit that every time I seek to open a page that I have been to before, if it is in a new window, it is forced to reload despite my browser settings? and half the time even when I'm just backing or forwarding in the same window it is forced to reload... what a waste of bandwidth!

Can this not be changed?

I've never understood what's so wrong with gravedigging. If we're going to declare that people aren't allowed to post in old threads, we should just delete the threads. The real objection to gravedigging seems to be that it's often done in a spammy manner--people post random stuff on a thread just because they enjoy bringing old threads to the top. But in those cases, the offense is actually spamming, not gravedigging. I've talked to the mods about this in the past, and I think that the official policy is that you can resurrect old threads as long as you're contributing something worthwhile to the debate, but this isn't very clear.

and it might slow down the repeating of old topics if we had to wade through all the arguements against ..... gay marriage.... that have already been done in 25 pages of posts from a month ago
