Battle of the Bands (Iron Maiden vs. Metallica)

Amerigo
24-06-2004, 05:30
We begin the quarterfinals...

In Legends of Metal Bracket, Metallica goes up against Iron Maiden.

Okay here's how the voting goes. Since the polls can easily be manipulated this is the voting system we will use:

If you post your vote with a nation of 75 posts or more, that vote counts as two. The poll votes count as 1. Technically your vote can be counted as three votes, if you vote both in the poll and post what you voted for.

However, even with this system in place this entire poll can be easily manipulated. So I ask you, please don't... Let's not cheat shall we?

Also, I'd like arguements from both sides on why that particular band (in this case, Iron Maiden or Metallica) should win. So please feel free to post long paragraphs regarding the merits of either Iron Maiden or Metallica.

The poll will run for exactly 3 days.
After the poll closes. Posted votes will not count.

GET TO IT!!!

I voted for Iron Maiden. There are a couple of reasons for this: 1.) They had/have Bruce Dickenson as a frontman (his voice is one of the few you could technicially classify as hallmark for the genre). 2.) Even though Hammit studied under Satriani and Hetfield is a more than capable rhythm player (at least in the pre-Load eras), I feel that Maiden has always had the more interesting song-structure and (certainly in recent years) better solos.

Early Metallica was pretty good, even though everything after And Justice was pretty lame.

Iron Maiden were never bad, just not that great in my opinion, my vote goes to Metallica.

How can you compare the two? Iron Maiden is generally considered a Heavy Metal band, although some would classify them as Power Metal. Metallica was early Thrash, although even their earlier albums are more Speed Metal. I think of them as proto-Thrash. There are and have been much better Thrash and Speed Metal bands than Metallica (Kreator, Destruction, Watchtower, Blind Guardian, Sodom, Sadus).

I have been listening to underground metal (mostly Death and Black Metal) religiously for several years now, and in my opinion, your effort to narrow the entire genre down to these two bands is ridiculous. I'll concede that both are very influential, but there have been more influential bands, like Black Sabbath, Mercyful Fate...shit, even Iron Cross. Metallica helped to develop Thrash metal, but this is really not terribly significant since Thrash never really developed on its own. Thematically, it never added anything to the metal genre, like the much more noteworthy subgenres of Black and Death Metal did. Iron Maiden is perhaps the most influential Heavy/Traditional metal band since Black Sabbath, but their recent material is lackluster. Metallica's material after the black album is not even metal, and every album of theirs since ...And Justice was garbage (yes, ...And Justice is crappy, derivative Speed Metal - they had abandoned Thrash completely at this point).

My vote goes to Iron Maiden, but this is a silly poll.

If anyone is interested, here are some truly innovatiove metal bands:

Demilich
Nocturnus
Darkthrone
Burzum
Graveland
Summoning
Arghoslent
Celtic Frost
Bathory
Mercyful Fate
Black Sabbath
Possessed
Atheist
Von
Hellhammer

Sepultura (before Max cavalerra left). Roots (96).
Now Soul Fly is ok.

I've heard System of a dawn recently, it is not bad, although a little too slow.
Best album ever is "The great southern trendkill" from Pantera (96).

Damn, 96 was a great year, not just for wine!

Wait! How did Maiden beat Black Sabbath??? Sabbath is the best band ever!!! Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler, Bill Ward, Ozzy Osbourne? How could these Metal legends lose to any band at all? Well, anyways, my vote goes to Maiden. Metallica used to be one of my favorite bands, and master of Puppets rocked!
