They’ve hinted at merging the Xbox 2 with PC gaming before, but this is huge: Microsoft is supposed to be testing the waters on an “Xbox Next PC”, a $599 PC/game console hybrid that would be able to play all Xbox and Xbox 2 titles, as well as regular PC games and would come with a hard drive, a DVD/CD-RW combination drive, a regular Xbox controller, a remote control, a keyboard and a mouse. The one catch is that you’d have to use it with PC monitor or an HDTV, but that is becoming less and less of an issue for most people. No specifics on when this might come out, but probably not at least for a few months after the Xbox 2 hits stores next year.
$600 dollars! Thats insane! I will just wait for Nintendo and Sony's next attack!

I dont believe until Microsoft says something directly. There are also tons of things saying their ditching the hard drive in the next xbox.

That isn't the replacement for the X-Box, it's the top-of-the-line version of the X-Box 2, and it's also a low end computer, doesn't sound like too bad of a deal to me.

You can do that already with a little modding and a linux install.

Low end computer? You could get a low end computer for less than $600. Or, you could have me build you one and it'd be average range as far as performance, and it'd still cost less than $600. Console games are overrated anyway.
Trust me, a lot of B.S. rumors are being made. Especially for the video game industry.
Don't believe it until Microsoft says it

Remember, we don't actually know the specs on this yet...

This is really just a branch of what everyone is trying to do, what microsoft and sony wanted to do with the PS2 and the XBox that they eventually fell short on. The idea of the 'everything' box, the set top box that does everything. In the same way the the ideal PS3 will have a drive on it to act like a digital recorder (a la TiVo) and regular internet etc. The idea is that all of your living room will come out of one box and one pipe.
My theory (keep in mind, COMPLETELY OUT OF MY ASS) is that the hard drive for the PS2 is so overkill (40 GB compared to XBox's 8GB) is so that Sony can use it for streaming video, the barrier has been that techies don't mind watching movies on their computer, but the mass public wants to watch them on their tvs, something a PS2 (or 3) would allow. And, this is the important part, Sony has the library to drive that market. (in movies).
Since the debacle of the 3DO no mainstream system will likely ever introduce for much over $300. Whats more likely is they will comprimise on whatever they have to until the price is below $400.

I prefer console games to PC because I dont have to worry about my computer not being fast enough or tech specs, I can play on my couch, have my surround sound going, and the high quality Xbox games dont look much different than good PC games. Only problem is console games are more expensive then their PC counterparts. Pandora Tomorrow is 20 bucks at walmart, and for Xbox its 50.
