o____o well, get to it!

Also, if you're looking for a good anime site, go here:
www.gaiaonline.com
if you join, put the person who referred you as either Maniacal Maestro or dj_arashi@hotmail.com.

In my opinion, anime is just an animated form of soap operas... only with less far off relations killing each other... and more mechs and guns and demons and Japanese school girls...

Also, Japan rules for giving us good video games o_____o;;

I only put up with Japan because of:
1. The girls there
2. Their videogames
3. Their technology
4. Their anime

Other than that, I'd group Japan with Canada and tha'd be it.

another 'Japan discussion thread,' eh?

Kisarazu would call everybody here "JAPANAPHILE!!!"

My best friend is actually half-Japanese. The Japanese culture is interesting, the food is good, and so is *certain* (but not all) anime; IE Gundam, Kenshin, etc. Not sure if I'd visit tho; might be a bit of a culture shock to me.

Myself, I don't really think it's possible to say 'I like Anime.' Consider Yoshitoshi ABe's work: Serial Experiments Lain, which depicts a girl's degenration into paranoia and schitzophrenia, or Haibane Renmei, a beautiful, contemplative look at Purgatory. Compare this to the many iterations of Dragonball, which feature heavily-muscled men grunting and sweating and throwing mountains around. To say 'I like Anime' encompasses both of these. Cowboy Bebop, Escaflowne, Arjuna, and Utena are all quite removed from the likes of La Blue Girl or Urotsukidoji or Naruto.

So be more specific!

I've seen only a handful of Anime and really can't tell whether I like it or not yet.

I've lived in Japan before (Kadena AFB), and there is no real culture shock that I remember, other than that which you see on TV/advertisements/etc. off base. Japanese people are pretty friendly, yet in some respects more conservative than the rest of us, yet also pretty funny.

They often got mad at people for walking off base without shirts on (even men) while they jogged or whatever. They also got irked at the prununciation of the base Kadena. Before some complaints, the base was said as Ka-DEAN-uh now it is 'Ka-den-uh.' Mostly, except in official military announcements and such, everyone says it the old way.

Other than this and thier love/hate of Westerners (Japanese ads feature Westerners in most places, yet our official legal status is something on the order of outsider, I forget the official word, and I have heard that those trying to immigrate are hazed. Japan is 99% (or some similar percent) Asian), I found few problems. Most stores accepted dollars, and many people spoke English. Or at least enough to shop on. Because of the closeness of the exchange rate, one yen almost always was one penny = one yen. Wether it was one penny = .98 yen or one penny = 1.02 yen, no one cared.

All I can say is, I sincerely hope that's sarcasm that has gone over my head!

That sounds like some of the crazier elements of the younger Japanese (the older ones realise they'd be screwed over post war without us) that are like:

"The officers in charge should kill themselves (literaly, not figuratively) for thier act of extreme cowardace of surrendor! We should have fought to the death! Kick the Americans out! Destroy thier evil influences here! They are only outsiders!"

Power and War, how ignorent are you? Japan is a fine country and makes high quality, high tech products. They make cars that live longer then American. They build our TVs, telephones, and videogames. Even on you Xbox, half the game desingers names are like Yoshida Jihbfd. Anime sucks but your a fool to say that America should stick to itself and fuck everyone else. You should be thanking God or, if your as self centered as you seem to be, yourself, that you can go and buy middle eastern gas to fill up the fifty gallon gas tank on eight mile a gallon, American made, Hummer. To you ignorance may be bliss, but to the rest of us, ignorance just serves to piss the hell out of us.

I like some Anime, but not all. I love violent, in-your-face type stuff mostly. My faves are:

Angel Cop
Ninja Scroll
Wicked City
Jin Roh
Akira

Sometimes the cutesy characters in other Anime really piss me off...

There we are, New Fubaria! That's what I'd rather be hearing.

To illustrate how silly the 'Anime sucks!' or 'Anime rocks!' people sound, allow me to illustrate with a more common medium. Personally, I don't watch T.V. Nothing good on since they cancelled Vengeance Unlimited and put M*A*S*H, Made In Canada, and The Daily Show into time slots that I sleep through. However, I don't go stomping around saying 'T.V. sucks! It has absolutely no redeeming values! I am disgusted by the whole thing!'

Or, as another example. Mister Hypothetical goes down to the bookstore and picks up, say, something by Ernest Zundel. He reads it, then throws the book away and declares the entire print media to be trash. Or, he may pick up something by Tolkien or Rowling or Lovecraft, and declare that every single book ever come off a press is a brilliant masterwork. Either way, Mister Hypothetical is being a bit of a tosser, wouldn't you say?

I've been watching anime on and off for about 8 years and I still enjoy it but I am becoming bored of western fascination with Japan and their "culture." I wouldn't really call anime and video games a good representation of culture. What really ticked me off was when my friend announced that he was going to learn japanese, which is what all anime nerds do in their attempts to be the hardcore king nerd and to someday fulfill their dreams of getting a japanese girlfriend. Now he has mostly abandoned his old friends, including me, and has a bunch of emo loser anime-watching internet friends in the age range of 12-15 that kiss his ass all day. He is 18. I'm just upset he stopped talking to me for no apparent reason. All things considered, he was a good guy.

If you want to be really acurate though, American cultural influence during the post-war occupation, is partly responsible for anime (amongst other things). The granddaddy of Anime (can't recall his name), claimed to be heavily influenced by the works of Walt Disney, along with American comics (brought over by the G.I.'s)

As it stands today, Japan is one of America's top trading partners (with the 2nd largest economy in the world). Furthermore, their consumer technology, especially in the area of electronics, is at least 5 yrs ahead of what you see in the U.S. (For instance, the U.S. lags behind most of the 1st world in cellphone technology and services).

As for the subject at hand, I do enjoy a good bit of anime. Like any other medium, it has its good and its bad. But I do believe some the shows display superior writing and production qualities to their live-action counterparts. Furthermore, it's interesting to watch and see the product of a different culture, with different taboo's. (Europe has a violence taboo, America a definate sex taboo, while Japan seems to lack either.)
Currently the culture interests me, as it appears to be an interesting confluence of old and new.

On another note, due to the extreme crowding and integration of technology, some futurists (those people that try to predict what we'll be like x yrs down the road) believe that future western culture and civilization will probably resemble Japan's.

Now, I'd love to continue to discuss this, but I have to leave for field training in a few days, in the hopes of being able to protect the right of people, like yourself, to hold and express their own opinions. No matter how poorly formed or misguided they may be.

Have a good day sir.

Really, now. Is it too much to ask that you take all of one minute to type out a few lines on what you don't like, or why you don't like it? Or is this a more insidious strain of the disease that leads to spelling words with one letter?

Nonetheless, to all those that say that anime sucks, how much anime have you actually seen, considering the vast variation that exists in the genre?

Are you saying that by patronising this Microsoft product P & W is, in fact, enabling that Giant Sucking Sound of American jobs migrating south of the border?
Now, if you tell me that P & W hasn't yet bombed the local Wal-Mart store I would really get concerned about his commitment to the cause.
