Nope, it's called Pocket Monsters in Japan. The cartoon is based on the Nintendo Game Boy game Pokémon, and it's successors.

Sorry, but even tho I've never seen hentai the concept of it is rather unnerving to me.

Good anime just has to involve huge-ass mechas like Gundam (the greatest anime ever!!) and lotsa explosions. Oh btw this is *the* best quote from any anime ever (this came specifically from Inuyasha)

Okay. What the hell is Digimon? anyway, not all animes are crap for little kids. Anyone ever saw Hellsing? It is awesome. That show is just too cool. Though it might be way to violent for some people {my girlfriend could barely take it} but for people who could tolerate blood and sexual situations, it is an amazing and genius mature anime. I suggest that people watch it before judging anime as stuff for little kids.

They aren't exactly "adult oriented", it's just Animes are generally for teenagers to people in their 20's. There are kids animes, though.

Letila: Beware of Otakus. Insane anime fans who don't shower. My friend was at a hotel in Atlanta (He was there to see a Cubs vs Braves baseball game), and at the hotel at the same time was an Anime convention. He left his door open for 5 minutes to get his glove and everything ready, and 3 otakus walked into his room, in full costume (otakus dress up like anime characters at conventions), and said there was some evil force in his hotel room. They refused to leave, he had to call security, and security almost had to call the cops.

So in short, otakus are evil. Anime is good, but otakus are evil.

The basis of it is a new transformable jet, and a large battlecruiser from space that crashlands on earth, ending a world war due to fear.. 70,000 Civilians are brought into space by mistake, and it brings in several side stories that really just make the series. If you know anyone who has the Macross saga on DVD/VHS, I suggest you watch it. It's not a little kids anime.

Edit: Check out www.robotech.com for more info. It's 3 sagas, it just so happens my favorite is Macross.

If you want to know where to find some anime, watch cartoon network late at nights. They show FLCL (or at least did last time I checked), Cowboy Bebop, and Trigun (one of my personal faves), as well as some other stuff (Inuyasha, Big O, Witch Hunter Robin)

Are you guys on bad crack or something? Sure lots of anime is donkey faeces, but you'll all change your opinions when you've seen masterpieces like Akira.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0094625/

I need to add this is based on a series of 6 manga (thick Japanese comic books by the same author. It's even better than the movie.

Yes it is quite common. If I recall correctly, Akira means "Sun and Moon", connoting enormous powers of these heavenly bodies.

And in fact, the designers of the Akira class* from Star Trek named it after the aforementioned anime.

:? ehm... i'd like to see that how i'm supposed to be evil... otaku is translated as "anime fan" and i'm truly a fan by myself (i love sum good series like trigun and angel sanctuary) and i don't regognize myself as a evil person... cosplayers are those that dress up as anime characters, not the otakus!ok, cosplayers are otekus too, but they are in different way than most... or sumthing like that. but anyways, otaku (like me) isn't a BAD  or EVIL  person, otaku is more like a philatelist (the phreak who collects post stamps cuz he likes them), it's quite like the way of living and liking anime. and it doesn't mean that you have to be a blody freak to be an otaku, you're just a jolly good fellow!

Well since I don't speak Japanese, I don't feel qualified to say which one is better. It always makes me mad when people say that the Japanese version is better when I know that 99% of those people don't even know cause they don't know the damn language. For the most part, I'd rather have the English-dubbed than the subtitles, just because I don't think the Japanese version sounds anymore "realistic" However, there are definitely cases of such bad voice acting...you're better not knowing what they're saying...Witch Hunter Robin qualifies here...I never really got into it, although I tried watching several times because the animation was pretty.
Another series I do really like though is Serial Experiments Lain...that's pretty crazy...my friend has the DVD set...

I recommend Hellsing. It is a fascinating anime. the story is good, the characters are cool. {alucard is awesome. and celes is cute :wink: } the artwork is just incredible, and i love the dark theme of the artwork. the music is great, and fits in with the dark setting. the action is just amazing. though, some people may be turned off by the excessive blood and gore, as well as the sexual situations and excessive profanity.{ i could take it, but some people cant} The dubbing, also, is top notch. I currently own all four DVDs, which could be purchased from Amazon.com {or ebay is you want to find a cheaper price}
I also suggest reading the original hellsing manga {which the anime is obviously base don}. i happened to have read it after watching hellsing, and could clearly find the differences. though, it was still entertaining.

Ather good animes are: Trigun, Cowboy Bebop {i still dont thinkt hat it was as good as most people think} and of course, grave of the fireflies. {which is a break from your average anime. it is a sad tale. look for review on all professional anime and movie review sites}

First thing first- all anime is NOT adult oriented (though the majority is aimed at a serious story. A cartoon does not have to be kid stuff.) There is kid anime, story anime, and hentai (porno anime. dont ask)
Second- I personally hated both Princess Mononoke and Akira. I know I'm gonna get flamed for it, but Akira just plain sucked in terms of story, voice acting, and almost everything but animation quality. Princess Mononoke I can't really talk about cuz I only got half way through it. The english voice acting was so terrible I nearly had an aneurism. Evangelion is VERY good. It's very deep, funny, interesting, and action-packed. I've heard good things about Bubblegum Crisis, and I would have to suggest Hellsing, Berserk, Ninja Scroll (the movie), Trigun, and Cowboy Bebop to anybody interested. I enjoyed all of these very much. There are about a dozen or more Gundam series, but I personally like Gundam SEED, Mobile Suit Gundam, MSG: 8th MS Team, and Gundam Wing.

gundam wing and gundam seed are the two nest gundam series there are, but there are about 10 or so. starting with mobile suit gundam, and currently ending with gundam seed. g-gundam sucked. how can you have a war drama (which in my opinion is the heart of gundam) when war is a glorified figting tournament? theres zz gundam, ms 8th team, 0083, and a couple of others.

My vote also goes with Cowboy Bebop. For those who never heard of it before Cowboy Bebop is about a group of bounty hunters some 70 years in the future. A terrible catastrophe has rendered the Earth mostly uninhabitable and humanity survives out in the Solar System.

Bebop is almost a space opera except it's much more into jazz. Of all the anime I've seen this has most professional production values. Even the English dub is superb which is often anime's weak spot.

Because Japanese anime is... well, Japanese, there is often a lot that Westerners don't get because anime is often filled with Japanese cultural references most Westerners know nothing about. Not so with Cowboy Bebop. To be brief, Cowboy Bebop is all around great stuff.

Besides the 26 episode series there's also Cowboy Bebop: The Movie. My recommendation would to be to check out any local video rental stores, particularly Hollywood Video if there's one near you. While they most likely won't have the entire series there they might have enough to at least give you a good idea what the series is like. Any Hollywood Video or Blockbuster will have at least SOME anime on hand.

Netflix also has a pretty good selection lof anime as well and you might want to try that route as well.

Some other titles I think are good most of which you should be able to find at a Hollywood Video or Blockbuster.

Movies:

Wings of Honneamise
Princess Mononoke
Spirited Away
Ghost in the Shell

Series:

Bubblegum Crisis
Gunsmith Cats
Martian Successor Nadesico
Ranma 1/2

If you have ever seen: Robotech, Battle of the Planets, Speed Racer, Voltron, Pokemon ---

then you know what anime is.

Or rather, the bastardized, dumbed down translations we get here. If you see them in the original language (subtitled rather than dubbed) they are a lot less brainless.

Anime is simply Japanese animation. For anyone interested in seeing some really worthwhile stuff, I would suggest Princess Mononoke or Akira. Neo Evangelion and Bubblegum Crisis are pretty good too. For fun, Tank Police, Project Ako, Lupin, or The Dirty Pair. Then there's the tentacly alien/demon sex-fests (Hentai) which I tend to find boring and distasteful. Now now now, not all dubs are bad, just anything that appears on tv before midnight (barring tech tv and action channel). BTW, Project A-ko is just one step below the hentai series...
PS: Series to avoid like the plague they are: "Judge" (boring as all hell) "Aika" (panty fest, no real plot) "Najica" (see Aika) "Hand Maid May" (fanservice fest, little plot) "Amazing Nurse Nanako" (fanservice fest, what little plot there is revolves around new ways to make the ridiculously proportioned heroine get naked)

Anime: Japanese cartoons. Nothing more, nothing less.
And I challenge you to prove that... Pokemon, Digimon, Yu-Gi-Oh, Hamtaro, etc are adult-orientated. :P

I suggest that people watch it before judging anime as stuff for little kids.Yeah, Hellsing kicks much ass. Though Jun Valentine curses a BIT to much for my case... Also, in defense of Pokemon, Digimon, Yu-Gi-Oh, and MAYBE hamtaro: All those series were a LOT more mature in the original, each of them would probably be rated PG-13 in the pure format.

:? ehm... i'd like to see that how i'm supposed to be evil... otaku is translated as "anime fan" and i'm truly a fan by myself (i love sum good series like trigun and angel sanctuary) and i don't regognize myself as a evil person... cosplayers are those that dress up as anime characters, not the otakus!ok, cosplayers are otekus too, but they are in different way than most... or sumthing like that. but anyways, otaku (like me) isn't a BAD  or EVIL  person, otaku is more like a philatelist (the phreak who collects post stamps cuz he likes them), it's quite like the way of living and liking anime. and it doesn't mean that you have to be a blody freak to be an otaku, you're just a jolly good fellow! :wink:Correction, "otaku" translates as "house" In japanese it is a derogatory term for the geekiest of geeks who stay at home 24/7 watching cartoons are playing videogames. Though you are right for what it means in america. Btw Angel Sanctuary is the best FREAKY series ever. Dude married his sister for christs sake...

These are two fun, solid series that A) Scare you away from anime for all time or B)Traumatize you. Admitted I LOVE Hellsing, but it might be a BIT much for someone who's not used to "cartoons" using "fuck" as a comma. (God I miss Jun ;-;) BTW, what is up with Sera's boobs, they keep growing O.o

Letila, with the exception of recommendations, you can go to the Anime Turnpike that I linked to in an earlier post and get the answers to your questions about anime in less time than it takes to wait for someone to respond in this thread. oh, and another good movie is gundam wing: endless waltz. not the best gundam action there is, but the most awesome and impressive mobile suits ever. and i've heard nothing but good stuff about cowbot bebop and trigun. helsing is really supposed to be awesome, and the escaflowne movie is really good. much better than the tv series. um, you can get this tuff at best buy, or if you've got a suncoast nearby that's a good place to start, too.

There are a few anime movies that you need to see, simply because first impressions count: (listed in not so handy no order)

Cowboy Bebop
Akira (legendary)
Fist of the North Star (violent in extremis)
Spirited away (fantastic)
Ghost in the shell (music especially good.)
Ninja Scroll.
Vampire Hunter D

I don't see many series, but these are the anime movies that I recommend

I think the best suggestions you could give to someone who is just looking into what anime is would be something you could rent at the average video store or something that comes on TV.
http://www.schedule.adultswim.com
saturday is all kinds of anime...I really like Trigun...Bebop is ok (lots of people love it) some people like Inuyasha  and I, personally, find Big O to be a guilty pleasure (I watched like 6 episodes before seeing the robot though...maybe if I paid more attention, I wouldn't enjoy it- but who knows) The only other show Cartoon Network shows that I have seen is Witch Hunter Robin...and I don't like it...voice acting is terrible... Gundam Seed is also on, but I've never seen it, so I can't say...

Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away, and the Cowboy Bebop movie I know you can get at most Blockbusters..or whatever video store...

If you like what you see, you might want to check out something like http://www.netflix.com/PreviewSelection?sgid=623&hnjr=3
It costs like $22 bucks a month, but if you keep up with it, it might be worth it (besides...you can watch a full series in the trial period. Serial Experiments Lain is awesome...My boyfriend claims Martian Successor Nadesico is his favorite...And of course, there's always Evangelion (which he owns and I still haven't seen)...

Finally, whether or not you watch a single of these things I'm suggesting, everyone on this site (who hasn't already) needs to watch the Evangelion video of the Rammstein song "Engel" It's completely perfect.

OMG!! Wait then I just say something involving me and some superior being? EW! Anyway I can't believe there is still somebody and/or thing which has yet to know what anime is. I mean wow! Okay now to get serious.

Anime- Short for Japanese animation. It was created because after the West kicked in the door it began to dictate what Japan could and could not do. One of the things it did was get all pruritian about Japanese entertainment. So anime was began because it was thought that the idiot Westerners would not notice adult themes in the guise of a cartoon.

The Good, the Bad, and the Braindead-
These are the three types of anime. The good kind is thought provoking while not boring you completely to death. It is also known for it's excellent quality of animation and style. Example would be Akira, Series Experiment Lain, most of the Gundum series, Aon Flux, FLCL, etc.
Then there is the bad anime. It makes no sense either because it tries to hard or it doesn't try at all. It often doesn't make sense or lacks anything interesting within it. Examples: Escaflowne, Neo Evalinon(sic), BeyBlades, etc. into infinity.
Finally is the largest collection: the Braindead. This category kills brain cells yet it is everywhere. This is the kind of anime where there is no plot. It's just a bunch of played out anime stereotypes edited together. The style might be cool or it might completely suck doesn't matter you aren't going to notice. Examples: To many to even bother counting.

The anime you asked about is centered around a bunch of teenagers and some giant robots run with people imprinted computers. They are there to fight aliens from outerspace called 'Angels'. These angels are attempting to regain two of their own: 'Adam' and 'Eve'(?). If they can get them the world will end. The whole thing is confusing.

Now and Then, Here and There is one of the most beautifully animated series I've ever seen.

And it has a good plot.

There's a crapload of good anime titles. Just depends on what you want to see.
If you want something fairly calm and 'cutsey' (But still good) try Angelic layer or Fruits Basket.
Action, Noir, Cowboy Bebop, or Trigun.
Comedy, Dragon Half (My personal favorite; only 2 episodes, but HILLARIOUS) or Excel Saga.
Mech Action, Gundams or Evangelion.

Other good titles include Phantom Quest Corp, All Purpose Cultural Cat Girl Nuku Nuku, The Slayers, Magic Knight Rayearth, Read or Die or several of the others already mentioned.

Just for something to start, Cowboy Bebop is a pretty good choice, with the movie being excellent as well. Also good if you don't like reading subtitles; this is the only anime I personally like the Dub better than the sub.

If you want a short series which you could easily watch all of, Dragon Half, Read or Die, and Phantom Quest Corp. are good choices.

And stay far away from Fist of the North Star, unless you really love blood splatter. I'd imagine even most of the Hentai stuff has a better plot.

Guess I should add my recommendations on anime series too. My all-time favorites:

- Shojou Kakumei Utena
- X
- Princess Tutu
- Excel Saga (the most insane anime ever created)
- Kare Kano
- Mahou Tsukai Tai
- Slayers

I buy most of my anime from Ebay; it's cheapest that way. I always prefer the original Japanese voices over the English dubs, mostly because the English dubs usually suck ass. The reason Japan's voice actors are so much better is that there it's seen as a serious profession, while in the west it's usually a side-income without much status.
