Yes, I know. They say Fox News is not fair and balanced, while conveniently ignoring the fact that NPR (National Peoples Radio), CNN (Communist News Network), and MSNBC (More Senseless News By Commies) (and all the other news networks, btw) are flamingly liberal, and just because Fox News is the only network around that might have a conservative leaning, they try and bash it for partisanship. Well, that is the American Left wing for you there.

I have to admit I have not looked at Kyoto so I can't comment.

Just a simple observation.

When I was a wee lad; I lived in Mich.

I remember getting snowed in and remember several feet of snow.

My relatives recently told me they barely get a foot now and the snow does not last that long.

Nothing damning I know just an observation.

a cato institute free marketeer plays with numbers to downplay anthropogenic global warming?! who would have ever guessed?

i like how he shifts into percentages of the total greenhouse effect, without giving it to you in real numbers. makes things doubly obscure. of course, we don't have to double the total greenhouse effect to have ridiculously drastic consequences - a few degrees of warming or cooling can have radical effects on ecosystems and weather patterns.

at least they have gotten around to acknowledging that atmospheric gasses do in fact hold heat in. the cato institute free marketeers used to argue against that.

Interesting article in the Guardian today: an interview with the Chairman of Shell Oil UK and his fears concerning the global warming:

http://www.guardian.co.uk/uk_news/story/0,3604,1240496,00.html

The head of one of the world's biggest oil companies has admitted that the threat of climate change makes him "really very worried for the planet".

In an interview in today's Guardian Life section, Ron Oxburgh, chairman of Shell, says we urgently need to capture emissions of the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide, which scientists think contribute to global warming, and store them underground - a technique called carbon sequestration.

"Sequestration is difficult, but if we don't have sequestration then I see very little hope for the world," said Lord Oxburgh. "No one can be comfortable at the prospect of continuing to pump out the amounts of carbon dioxide that we are pumping out at present ... with consequences that we really can't predict but are probably not good."

His comments will enrage many in the oil industry, which is targeted by climate change campaigners because the use of its products spews out huge quantities of carbon dioxide, most visibly from vehicle exhausts.

His words follow those of the government's chief science adviser, David King, who said in January that climate change posed a bigger threat to the world than terrorism.

"You can't slip a piece of paper between David King and me on this position," said Lord Oxburgh, a respected geologist who replaced the disgraced Philip Watts as chairman of the British arm of the oil giant in March.

The story continues on the website.

Without realizing it, you just gave some proof to the statement that global warming is a reality. Your climate has changed in recent years, has it not? Storms are stronger and more destructive than in the past. Weather swings are more radical than in the past.

And in case you didn't notice--and if you're relying on that article as your sole source of global warming information you wouldn't because the author didn't mention it--the average global temperature has increased about 4 degrees celsius in the last 50 years (I believe it's 50, it might be less). And while that may not sound like much, in areas of the world like Alaska, that's the difference between permafrost and bogland, between snowfall that reflects sunlight and heat back into space and shrubbery that soaks it in.

The key word is may. Yes there is a slowdown in the ocean currents, but North America and Europe is still getting hotter. Example: Lots of heat related deaths in France. So far the evidence is not in favor of that theory.

Yes, too bad when the rising temperature screws up the Atlantic Conveyor and sends the world into another ice age*. Reguardless of the amount of CO2- more would just melt more ice which would add more to the Atlantic which messes with the Conveyor even more and keeps everything nice and icy- starting, supposedly, in Britain and spreading from there because that's closest to the Conveyor.

Or, from a different model, everything gets either sizzling or freezing depending upon location. So it could keep you warm at night, actually- very warm...

And everyone presenting colder storms or warmer days as proof, Global Warming or lack thereof is a gradual process (or lack of a gradual process), and I doubt a cold snap or a heat wave counts...

*Definate maybe on that one, though, because it's an extremely iffy on if/when/how/what it would happen.

Ok two things I wish to adress. First of all like some one else said a heat wave or a blizzard is not a good indication of global warming. This is true. It is difficult to exactly predict the effect of the warming but one thing is for sure: it will not bode well for humanity. Then when other countries want to do something about it by enacting the Kyoto Protocol Bush just laughs it off because it is not good for his CEO buddies. When their houses in Malibu are underwater they will not be laughing will they. The worst part is that the masses will do nothing about it because they recieve misinformation courtesey of Fox (fair and balaced my ass) News.

Second, this thread has made me decide to make a media bias thread. I will do it tomorrow though for I am already too weary of dumbasses.

You are half right. The simptoms of this global warming is staving off of an ice age. The sea level will rise, (and it has but very little and very slowly) and it will be delt with in time. We currently do not have a serious problem. Global warming is good for the US.

Actually, we do live in a warmer period of an Ice Age RIGHT NOW. And for those who say that global warming is keeping it off, well, let's see... There are proven scientific findings that show that most of Europe and half the US were flooded in the warmer times, that the Cemtrsl Plains were a lake, and Spain and Croatia were tropical islands. So I personally would not want another warmer climate. As to the global trend without pollution, I think (I may be wrong) the world is recovering from the Little Ice Age of the 19th - early 20th century, so no climatic cooldown is in sight.

Some information for the meteorologically impaired:

Global warming can indeed instigate a new ice age. Warmer air means more precipitation (snow and rain and such), especially over the ice caps. More snow on the ice caps = bigger ice caps, that eventually find their way down south. Tada! A new ice age!

I would argue that we do have a problem now. Animal migration patterns are already beginning to get screwed up. That is just one example. I could post more but you wouldn't listen anyway. Regardless, just because it is not a quote "serious problem" does not mean that we should sit idly by. We need to enact global legislation to stop global warming and the Kyoto Protocol is a great first start. And quit making the same argument over and over after people who are educated have repeatedly debunked your assertions.

Take a look at this link home slice. Maybe you can learn a little bit.

I don't trust a news website that has more than one beer advertisement on one page.

Also, in response to that one guy about how MSNBC is run by communists, let me remind you that it is owned by Bill Gates, the richest man in the world, and a perfect example of a heartless capitalist. Don't be stupid.

Heartless capatalist, awwww poor baby...

Ahem... the word is capitalist. If you're going to attempt to humiliate me, at least take some measures to keep from humiliating yourself in the process.

By the way, everyone knows that gasoline isn't flammable. It's just a myth put out by the liberal elite to keep REAL Americans from dumping gasoline everywhere and then throwing lit matches onto it. Take your commie pinko brainwashing tactics back to Russia, because America doesn't want them.

Wait a sec. You are saying gasoline us not flammable?

Goldarn there are a lot of silly people on NS. Anyone who uses the phrase "commie pinko brainwashing" is either joking, or should be treated, for the sake of decorum, as though they were. I'll presume the prior.
Second, and more importantly, looking only at temperate changes in the US over the last decade will give you little idea, for better or worse, what is happening in terms of global warming. And I've got news for you: global warming is good for NO ONE. While the movie "The Day After Tomorrow" is grossly superficial, exaggerated, and sensational, its basic premise is sound: global warming, unchecked, WILL eventually lead to melting at the poles and radical temperature DECREASES in the United States, and most of the rest of the world.
What is happening to the world is not a simple "get hotter or get colder" scenario. The elements involved (including currents, winds, state-change energy, and albedo) are much more complex than that. Short-term warming may well create massive long-term cooling. Stasis is the only happy place to be.
There is no faster way to drive this planet into another (perceptible) ice age than to continue emitting greenhouse gases and causing the mean temperate to rise. It probably won't happen in our lifetimes, but may well happen within the lifetimes of our grandchildren, and it should not be ignored.
