I'm actually right in the middle, but more on the conservative side.

I'm conservative, and proud of it.

Enough for there to be a fair amount of nations deated by flaming each other over politics.

Right here...As always, I'm shocked at the number of "passive, open-minded" types in this forum who will attack someone for holding conservative beliefs. Just take it with good humor.

Seeing the stupidity of the less moral of the liberals on NS was one of the things that slowly pushed me from Libertarian towards a more central position on the right, seeing as Conservatism seems to help repair a lot of the more stupid events of destruction that has hit us in the last century or so.

OPEC said they were going to cut down on the amount of oil shipped to America. So the oil companies raised the prices now. The Bush administration can do nothing about that, what they can do is get rid of a government that they do not like who happens to control something that they like.

That's a little strange, considering that most of the oil they use is (at the moment) imported oil.

I'm thinking of becoming a member of the CPC (Conservative Party of Canada), I'm just checking to make sure it won't void my American Citizenship first (Dual citizenship for me), and am also volunteering for the CPC in my riding for the Federal election on June 28th.

So yeah, obviously I am Conservative.

I generally don't mind left wing people until they start arguing their points with no facts to back them up.

Actually, MOST of my friends are middle-left, probably because I live in Canada. Most of the people in my region are middle-left or extreme left as well.... :( Oh well, they are my friends though, so it's all good.

Proud member of the CPC. I'm helping with my riding association in Quebec. So yeah I'm a conservative, a libertarian conservative.

Coming from a left winger- I don't view all right wing as fascist or racist. However, I might give the impression sometimes in my posts on here...because usually, when someone launches into a lengthy diatribe denouncing the "evils" of socialism, they turn out to be in fact, believers in fascism. It's a tag that the right are stuck with because of these people, but then again, the socialist left are stuck with being labelled as supporters of dictatorship. So you're dammned either way.

Depends what you mean by "conservative". Do you mean illiberal? Right-wing? Or do you mean anti-government, anti-military, anti-police, and so on? Because I suppose I am in many ways a conservative: I like small government. But then again, I also like government that acts as a counterbalance to big business when big business begins to resemble government.

Social conservatism, of course, is another thing entirely: things like opposition to abortion, opposition to women being paid equal wages for equal jobs, opposition to racial equality, and so on.

And then there's fiscal conservatism: the theory that a somewhat smaller slice of a much bigger pie is better than a somewhat bigger slice of a much smaller pie.

And then there's the other fiscal conservatism: the theory that the poor can go soak their heads--they don't deserve our help.

How about the Libertarian Party and the American Civil Liberties Union? Are they "conservative"? I suppose so, in the sense that they are keen on preserving Constitutional freedoms. But then, many self-avowed "conservatives" also happen to be Republicans, and the Republican Party is more a fascist party than anything else.

So there are all these kinds of conservatism. Could you be more specific?

The problem in Iraq as far as stability isn't that the US invaded as much as how the US went about invading. Clearly the 135,000 troops there aren't enough for the job. We tried doing it on the cheap and this is the end result. One pundit called it "imperialism lite" and that'd fairly acurate assessment of the situation.

Being a conservative is all well and good but true conservatives should be thoughtful people, not people given to knee-jerk reactions. As George Will wrote, presenting the facts as they are and not how you wish them to be is the core of conservatism. People who call themselves conservatives may stray from this ideal but the concept remains the same.

Based on the facts invading Iraq can only be seen as a mistake. Our military is stretched so thin that the Pentagon is considering taking troops from South Korea to deploy in Iraq, we now own a open-ended hole into which our money must now be poured into for an indefinite period of time, and worse is the fact that failure in Iraq will go a long ways towards destroying whatever moral authority America had.

Being a true conservative means acknowledging the facts even when it's inconvenient to do so. It does not mean walking in lockstep with the Bush Administration or the Republican Party.

Im Conservative and half my family are Conservative, they have done much more for this country than Labour. All they want to do is give all our power to Brussels (and the French) and try to get rid of our Queen.
