Portraits of the Clintons were just unveiled at the White House, and this is what (current) President Bush had to offer
"It's good to see so many who served our nation so ably in the Clinton administration. Thank you all for coming back, thanks for your service to the country, and welcome back to the White House. We're really glad you're here and I know the president is as well."

Hehe...watching the Daily Show- late, but still awesome...

Indeed, once a President you are always 'Mr. President' or 'President X", where X is your name, at least until you die, Im not sure if it still applies after that.

"The Clinton alumni are also circulating a joke about how many Bush adminstration officials it takes to change a light bulb. The answer is seven, and the joke is too long for this space, but suffice it to say that one of the officials is in charge of blaming Mr. Clinton for the blown bulb, and another is in charge of invading a country that is believed to be stockpiling replacement bulbs."

perhaps not, but it is germain to the topic of the threadWhy? I refer to most of the past presidents--no, all of them--by their last names whether I liked them or not. Were I in any of their presences, I would certainly refer to them as President, but here and now, not a chance in hell.

but clinton was there, that's why bush referred to him as the president. therefore bush wasn't actually being stupid in the quote, he was being correct, that's what pantylvania was getting at. no one cares what YOU call the president, well someone may but...

I would refer to them as president...but not "the president"
To me, "the president" (especially in a context such as the one used) implies the only one, which I would think is the current one.
And, I'm sure this is just the way The Daily Show cut it, but it sounded to me as though he was talking to clinton (and his administration) and if that was the case, it would seem silly for him to say "welcome back mr Clinton, glad you're here and I'm sure President Clinton is too"
