Someone must know something about computers

I bought a sony digital camcorder, and, unsurprisingly, I can't get the sodding thing to work. Can anyone tell me if a device such as a camcorder is plugged in via USB, shouldn't some sort of extra drive appear on My Computer? If not, does anyone know how to access the files I have stored on the digital cassette?

it depends if it is plug and play, if not you may need to install the drivers for it

Did a CD come with it?

Yeah, its called Sony Picture Package 1.0. I've installed it.

A troubleshooting guide suggested uninstalling a USB driver from a list and then reinstalling it, which (I think) I did.

Try plugging the AC adapter into the camera while it is connected via USB. I had the same thing with my Panasonic SV-AV100. Turns out the USB power source just isnt enough to push it alone.

Also, I have been able to use the camera in some ways, theres a visual test thing that streams the camera image to the computer, but I can't play anything on the computer thats been recorded.

Have you tried the manufacturers website? They could have updates, maybe even a problems forum or something like that.

If you are trying to 'play' video from your camcorder on your pc via usb then that is the prob, USB is too narow. You need to copy the file from your camera to your PC harddrive, then play the video file.

Different cameras do this in different ways, I can't help much beyond that.

there might be a switch on teh camera which switches from record to view to share or somthing...

see if you can find one of them

try restarting your computer if you dont get this to work.
