well at least you don't have a file on your desktop you've renamed the annoying trojan that you absolutely can't get rid of.

Lil program called "hijackthis".

It will list everything that affect your startup page.
EVERYTHING....

So if its a browser hijacker...you find it, and delete it.

also..if you have run Spybot 1.3, and Ad-aware, AND your anti-virus, and you STILL cant get rid of it..you may have to edit it out of your registry.

This can be tricky, so if you must do it......be careful.
You may delete a crucial file.
Post here again if you need more help.

This is what I do.

That depends on what you consider "competent".
Both really.

The actual A+ test is in two parts..Hardware ans Software.
The hardware part comes easier to me, so thats gonna be the first one I take this summer.
the software part is HARD....lots of questions about operating systems that no one really uses anymore...like DOS, and Windows 3.1
Much of it is stuff like workgroups, and permission levels...

Gonna have to brush up on the Software part.

ever used linux?

Not really.
I'd really like to, though, becuase more and more businesses are starting to use it, becuase of its cost, (most of the time NONE,) and its stability.
Linux doesnt crash very often, not like Windows.
and you dont see many viruses for Linux, either.

Fizz was somewhere... somewhere... he just couldn't get his hands on him.

Something flickered and his gun was out before he could finished his pie.

Firing off three rounds, he spun around and ran for the exit, Fizz's words echoing in his ears.

well... linux is good for businesses, bad for home users. its very user unfriendly and almost exactly the same as windows.... but without the security concerns. and installing shit is a bitch. but if you're not a complete idiot windows xp professional works really good if you ditch internet explorer and mail.

Yeah,
I wouldnt recommend Linux for home use, there just arent enough of the same programs like there are for Windows.
All the good games......Windows.

There ARE windows emulators for Linux..and programs that will allow to run windows programs on linux..but Ive heard that sometimes they have issues.

I'd heartily recommend either SUSE 9.1, or Mandrake 10 for the home user personally. Both versions of Linux are extremely easy to use, and have addressed most of the problems home users would have with the OS. I myself am using Mandrake 10, with OpenOffice 1.1.1, and have yet to find a single document, or spreadsheet from a colleague using MS Office that I could not open, and conversely, have not had a single person using MS Office unable to open documents I've sent them. The 2.6 is blisteringly fast, now that it's incorporated true pre-emptive multitasking, and the security is second to none.
My wife, is also using Mankrake 10, of which we are using the same liscence (love that, legally buy one copy, and can legally copy it on as many machines as you like, unlike M$). But she is used to MS Office, and did not want to give it up. In her case, I installed Codeweavers Crossover Office Professional 3.0, and then installed MS Office XP (Word, Excel, Outlook, and Powerpoint), and in the last few months, she has not complained once. Ironically, Office XP pro seems to be running faster and more stabley in an emulator on Linux, then it was in Windows XP.
The one area that does suck with Linux at the moment ( and the only reason my machine dual boots between Windows XP, and Linux ) is games. I have a few games that will run well on Linux using Transgaming's WineX (such as GTA 3, Deus Ex 2, Everquest, and Unreal 2), but there are still a few which don't work well (at least ID software has already confirmed however that Doom 3 will have native Linux support Woooohoooo!!!!).
The only other issue's that I think really needs to be addressed by the Linux community are as stated by BS, installing some applications can be a pain Although most companies now have excellent installers which are simple and quick to use, a few are still hung on the make, build, pray you have all of the dependencies, but they are becoming fewer and fewer every year.
The other issue, is the rampant miltancy of some Linux users, which does little more than drive potential fence sitters away from the OS for purely political concerns.
Anyway, sorry about the multipage rant, but that's what I've found so far.
(Oh yeah, I've been a Linux user since Red Hat 2.0...shudder handcompile the kernel anyone .....ugggh) Today, Linux is a dream.

Linux's main problems is games. For corporate types, this is not a problem since little kiddies can't play their games during work time but for us gamers it is.

Most new games for Windows require DirectX 9.0 or higher and require pretty new video cards. Drivers could be a problem for linux even if the game is ported to Linux.

yeah i've run spybot, adaware and avg antivirus. avg recognizes it as "trojan: agent.ba but can't delete it. it was originally in system 32 but i renamed it and put it on my desktop to keep track of it. i can't delete it normally, if i put it in spybots secure shredder it just reappears with a randomly generated new name.

Most new games for Windows require DirectX 9.0 or higher and require pretty new video cards. Drivers could be a problem for linux even if the game is ported to Linux.

While I agree that Linux does not currently match Windows, in terms of the number games supported, this has nothing to do with the video cards or their drivers. Currently, the only real gaming cards to speak of are made by either NVidia or ATI. Both companies provide native Linux drivers for all of their cards. My system has an ATI 9800 PRO in it, and it works perfectly in Linux.

The main problem with running games in Linux, is as you stated above, that most new games use Microsoft's Direct X 9.0, and also that few companies want to put the effort into producing a Native Linux engine (Id software of the Doom, Quake fame being a notable exception). Transgaming's WineX V 3.2 is making some inroads into this, and currently supports a large amount of the Direct X 9 API, and most of the Direct X 8 API, and can currently run a large number of games with only minor annoyances. An example of games which run under WineX 3.2 are

NOTE: I've cut out close to 100 games with a working rating of 4, to save on space. Most of the problems which appear in games with a rating of 4, have to do with minor texture glitches, or menus that aren't displayed correctly. To attain a level 4 rating however, the glitches must not affect gameplay, and must be few in number. There are several hundred more games supported at level 3, but most of these require a certain amount of "tweaking" to get them to run correctly.

I wonder if anyone has any ideas here, I'm having a problem with a new digital camcorder, a Sony DCR-HC18E.

I can't get any pictures or movie clips to transfer, anyone have any ideas? I'm pretty certain that the USB is connected right, because I can get the camera image to appear on the computer screen, I just can't view any of the media I've saved
