...for the rich and famous:

This article appeared in the Guardian today. *here* (http://www.guardian.co.uk/g2/story/0,3604,1238796,00.html)

On how celebrities with too much money and not enough sense give cults huge amounts of money to recieve enlightenment/etc.

What has most outraged traditional Jewish organisations about the Kabbalah sect is the suggestion that it is possible to gain wisdom without study. Instead, followers can practise 20-second "speed meditation" and are told that it is possible to subconsciously understand ancient texts simply by running their hands over them

I think it is obvious to see the rediculousness (sp?) of this, even if one does no/little of Kabbalah (like yours truely).

It also has an interest view on why these cults are becoming more common and popular.

Traditional religion is about a relationship between the individual and God and the assumption is that the Almighty is more important. What many of these neo-religious movements do is recalibrate the balance so that the focus is on the individual; not what you can do for God but what God can do for you. It is the spirituality of narcissism. Seen in this light it is not surprising that so many, not just celebrities, find this appealing. Belonging to such sects is about reaping the rewards of spirituality without having to pay the price. It is religion without the calories, an Atkins diet for the soul. Just as Atkins promises it is possible to lose weight painlessly, just as Botox assures that ageing can be arrested, so groups such as the Kabbalah offer decaffeinated religion to those afraid of the hard stuff

I'm not exactly sure if Madonna's the best example if one wishes to
find what you'd call - if one can even use the term - an "Ideal
Kaballist". She's always been somewhat kitch/tacky.
From her slut days in the 80s to every one of her revisions of herself.
So I don't know if you can judge the whole Kaballah on one or two
people (the other being Roseanne).

The kaballah is not a religion, per se, rather a practice.
It can be done in conjuction with other faiths (if one has the correct mindset). So, for example, if one is raised "nicer", then surely
the rewards of the Kaballah won't manifest themselves in such a gaudy manner?

I see what you mean about stars and cults, though.
Scientology being the most notable.
a) L. Ron Hubbard himself appears to admit that his own cult is
manufactured (or so I've heard), which kind of denotes a certain
"willing gullibility" in my opinion. It seems to be an experiment of
how far L. Ron Hubbard can take bulls**t.
b) After a while it seems to become a name for a club, rather than a
religious or spiritual belief.
By this, I mean that the stars, the wealthy elite, etc. join Scientology
to associate, to network etc.
But again, this is speculation on my part.

Yes, sorry.

To Wiestlandia: Am I correct in thinking that Kabbalah is a vein in Judaism, similar to sufiism in Islam? (the only thing I really know about kabbalism is from the movie pi.)

But this present incarnation is stupid and for the gullible.

Did anyone else like the conclucion that in traditional religion God comes first. But the new wave make the individual (especially if they have a lot of money) more important than God. And the individual is the only one who matters.
