Heres a poll.
Who's the greatest single musician(s) of the last century.
just individual people in any band, or solo performer, or songwriter, or duos are what we're going for.
The ones who wrote the music they played.
I had to trim this down, so I'd also like to put Muddy Waters, Count Basie in there as well.

We had Vanilla Ice play at our fraternity house a few years ago for only $6,000 + all the beer he could drink.

What happened to Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie who kicked Miles Davis' Ass. And What about Jimi Hendrix. And all the legends that don't suck. John Lennon and Paul McCartney are way better than everyone on the poll now. But I'd have a hard time choosing if there were some actual talented musicians up there.

Miles Davis was a Student of Gillespie and he couldn't begin to compare with him. Duke Ellington was pretty good but he can't compete with the Serious Legends. Rogers and Hammerstein I'm not too familiar with, but I have played a couple of their Pieces and although their music sounded good it was very simple and used basic chord progressions. Good, but not great.

I agree perfectly with you.
But really, what Im going for is not just technical precision, but true influence on their particular genre, or the impact on music as a whole.
So, Popularity does have at least some consideration, but not the sole reason for a choice.

In that case, Charlie Parker Influenced and completely changed Jazz and Music Forever. And is definitely the most influential Musician aside from John Lennon and McCartney. As well as Kurt Cobain. If your looking for Influence.

You cant discount Mr. Parker, thats da truth.
If only I would have remembered him when I was creating the poll.
So far, its Lennon/McCartney.
Cannot think of a name

That's incredibly dismissive of Miles Davis' influence. Sure he played with Bird and Diz (when he was seventeen at Juliard!), but then went on to redefine jazz not once, but several times. Birth of the Cool, Kind of Blue, Bitches Brew. All albumns that changed the face of jazz. Not to mention the Gil Evans third stream masterpieces like Sketches of Spain. As a performer, composer and soloist, Miles has to be one of the best and most influential jazz musicians to have played.
And dismissing Ellington--I'm appalled. Duke is the Bach of Jazz, without Ellington's influence jazz would have never gotten off the streets and become the compositional art that it is today. And Ellington and Staryhorn pieces make up the bulk of jazz standards to this day. How can you dismiss him as an essential figure in jazz? And can't stand up????? I direct your attention to Money Jungle with Charles Mingus and Max Roach. Intense.
Ellington and Miles would be at the top of any serious list of greatest jazz musicians to have played. I'm shocked to see them dismissed so out of hand. I am an ardent fan of Bird and Coltrane and marvel at thier solos no matter how many times I've heard them, but still--

I thought of John Coltrane, and Herbie Hancock too.
But again..sadly..you can only post so many.....
