Actually, her name was "Regan." If it's a reference to anything, it's a reference to King Lear. I seriously doubt Shakespeare was a demon-possessed Republican, although I've been wrong about these things before.

Well, The Exorcist came out in 1973, and the book was first published in 1971, I believe. By then, Ronald Reagan had been governor of California for several years and was a fairly well-known political figure. So if the naming was more than coincidence (which I doubt), then it was probably the author/filmmaker's deliberate choice.
