Greatest FORMER Presidents.

Of all 20th century presidents, who has done the most to better the world...AFTER leaving office? Keep in mind, that we are talking about only post-presidential years. My vote goes to Jimmy Carter. In fact, I'd go so far as to say that he was a far better ex-president than he was a president! Runner-up is George Bush Sr. His 'Points of Light' foundation has accomplished a lot of good.
I think that in 20 years, that Bill Clinton will probably top them all as far as ex-presidents. But his post-office career is still young.

The evil cynic in my wants to suggest President McKinley....
William H, "I don't remember that I ever was President." Taft (http://www.whitehouse.gov/history/presidents/wt27.html) who went on to be a pretty good SC chief justice.
As far as recent presidents go, I'd say that Carter has been out just long enough to start looking at his post presidential accomplishments. Reagan, GHWBush, and Clinton have yet to really settle long enough to allow for a good judgement....
I would have to agree with LG, Bill Clinton was one of our best president this century, among a few.
I think it's pretty silly that he had to go through that whole thing with Monica... if he wants to have consentual sex with one of his workers, so be it. It's not even our place to get into it. I don't see why everyone freaked out. He didn't rape her, after all...
Anyway, I really like Bill. Yaaaay.

Without a doubt, Carter. He understood the shape of things to come, but never stood a chance of doing anything about it. History will remember him, in a footnote, as someone who didn't play the great game, but understood it.

Teddy Roosevelt.
Without the Panama Canal, America would be a totally different country.
Harry Truman was also good.
Carter had a horrible foreign policy. His attempts at "lets make the world be happy" were a complete failure. (look at Israel)
But, he's excelent after he left office. :D (if that counts)

Genius! I couldn't have said it better myself. Besides his work on the international diplomacy front, JC stays very active close to home, as a major contributor and builder with Habitat for Humanity.

Jimmy Carter was a wonderful humanitarian and diplomat after his presidency. But on the same token, so was Hoover.

Abe Lincoln
Along with Harrison, Taylor, Garfield, McKinley, FDR, and Kennedy.
Of those, again I'd say McKinley. He left us in the hands of TR, one of the greats.

Truman, he stood up to Joseph Stalin and kept the USSR from expanding even more, if it weren't for him, we might all be refering to each other as "comrade" now.
id have to say Mr. Jefferson was the best president ever, though the word Honkey made me sad.

Children...we're talking about best ex-presidents, meaning who accomplished the most or was most impressive AFTER they left office...
in this category, I'd have to say either Jimmy Carter for all his humanitarian work (mediocre president, but a nice guy who really wants to help out, so he turned his clout post-presidency to doing good deeds on a large scale...go Jimmy!)
Or possibily William Howard Taft, became a very effective and much admired Chief Justice of the Supreme Court after being landslided out of office. Apparently he is said to have enjoyed being the Chief Justice greatly more than being President
John Quincy Adams also is known for his famous post-presidency career as a Congressman, eventually ending up as the Speaker of the House, a master politician, and is the man who successfully defended the Amistad slaves in front of the Supreme Court after they're uprising. He secured their freedom....quite impressive.

On a serious note, though... I'd say Carter. I haven't lived through that many, and school tends to ignore presidents after they leave office, but Carter seems to be the one I hear the most about, post-presidency.

LBJ used to get annoyed by the JFK talk. He said he had way more women. I even heard a released recording of him talking to Jackie after JFK's death. The hound sounded like he was hitting on her!

How about Herbert Hoover, since you are sticking to Republicans? After all they named a Dam after him.
FDR musta been one helluva great leader? He was elected for 3 straight terms. Too bad he passed away while in office.

Reagan.- wasn't fond of the deficits though
Washington
Adams
Coolidge
Madison- made a mistake with the war of 1812 however
Lincoln- though the whole allowing or not doing more to keep us from war and splitting thing bugs me but he was a good guy and did a well enough job.
Kennedy wasn't that great was much overated he just got alot of attention what with being assasinated.
FDR I can not deny was a good president if not great he did a swell job though I would have been very much opposed to his new deal and much of his other big government policies
Many whom we've never had such as barry goldwater and bob dole would have been better than none a number of third party candidates (libertarians etc.) as well.
LBJ sucked and so did carter. Ford was no one special nor was nixon.

Ok then. So I'm not particularly sticking to Republicans, since out of two Presidents I named in my post, one was a Republican and one was a Democrat.

Um, Lincoln is cliche, but how about Teddy Roosevelt. I have no interest in American history, but I heard Teddy Roosevelt was pretty good.
Also, they were both Republicans with arguably liberal attitude/actions.
*sigh* All the smart kind-hearted ones must have died or something.
