Battle Of The Bands - KING CRIMSON vs RUSH

(I can't take it anymore! I have to do one of these stupid things too)

Both bands have been around forever and both are still creating innovative new music - or at least as innovative as old farts are capable of. Both are known for playing virtuoso "cerebral" rock.

That said, I'm a diehard Crimson fan so I have to go with them. Rush is OK too though.

Both had their "great" moments. I think KC's moments were a little better.

rush had their moments, but kc wrote 21st century schitzoid man. for that alone they get my vote, i generally don't like prog rock, but there is something about that song, it just come out of nowhere in the late sixties and out does most punk, metal and industrial before the genres were even invented at their own games.

yeah but do KC have Neil Pert? Rush gets my vote but of course I'm biased. I play the drums.

Have you heard Crimson's Bill Bruford? He's the guy Neil Peart looks up to. WAY up to.

(Bruford finally left KC after nearly 30 years. He now plays jazz full time.)

Damn, that is a delimma. KC has Red going for them and Rush of course has 2112. Agh....I can't decide, I can only say that they are two of the true grand-daddy's of the progressive genre and both can still kick-ass live (say KC 4 years ago and Rush last year).

It has to be Rush...
2112, Moving Pictures & Power Windows.
Plus the recent Live in RIO DVD is cracking !
Can't wait til their UK tour later this year...I haven't seen them since they toured with Exit Stage Left !

But...have you ever listened to much Crimson? Those Rush albums are all good, but KC's best releases are perhaps the greatest music ever made by any rock band - anywhere, anytime.

Start with Crimson's live albums "Absent Lovers" and "The Night Watch" as overviews of their two best periods.

Hard, but Rush by a smidgeon over King Crimson. Just a smidgeon. :(

RUSH!! Anyone who writes music based on an Ayn Rand story...totally geeky and totally awesome

Oh I'm sure Neil Peart out-grew Ayn Rand's piffle. It would be pretty sad if he didn't wouldn't it?

Think you're exaggerating a little there buddy.

No, I own nearly 3000 CDs and vinyl albums and have been listening seriously to music since about 1969. And I honestly do feel that way - no exaggeration IMO.

naw court of the crimson king all the way... okay it the only album of theirs i've really listened to all the way through but....

That album isn't actually very representative of KC's style & career. Their later stuff is much more metal & industrial sounding. KC even did a tour with Tool a few years ago and the 2 bands' styles meshed quite well.

King Crimson have witstood the test of time much better. They have been making decent records almost all of their carreer. That being said, no album in the world wil ever top 2112.
Why is it that King Crimson always has to make the same record twice?
I like all of their different periods but maybe they should make less albums and be a little more renewing.

The only time KC "made the same record twice" was with their 1st & 2nd albums during 1969-70. After that all their albums were very distinct from each other. Listen again, carefully this time.

One thing that needs to be emphasised about King Crimson is that their music shines most brightly in a live setting, when they are improvising. That's why many of their fans might own, say, 10 concert recordings from the same tour. KC's studio albums aren't the best way to experience the band at all, and usually only show a glimpse of what they can do.

I vote not for King Crimson, but for the Crimson King. May his follower R.F. help him to destroy the beams and escape his tower prison! (Did no one else think this?)

Well I guess you pwn me. I've only had about 5 years exposure to the world of music.

i went to see KC only recently, one year ago to be exact and quite frankly i was dissapointed.
Really, it all starts to sound like more of the same to me.

I for one like there studio albums more than their live-stuff.
absent lovers is NOT my favourite KC-album.

The best KC-related album i have is young person's guide to discipline.

Interesting Irony...as I clicked on this topic, the song "Free Will" by Rush just came on the radio, so I am going to vote for them...

Plus, they "were" my favorite band...until they released Vapor Trails...what trash...
