this was sparked by an argument between me and a friend - me backing rock & roll and him backing punk.
Despite landslide victories for rock in numerous places including snitz.com and jezchat he still refused to accept defeat.
So im widening the scope to include u guys!

Which is better?

btw by rock & roll i mean Bon Jovi, AC/DC, Aerosmith, Guns N Roses etc

So by rock and roll you mean the crap that dirty people with long hair, and who have teenage moustaches listen to? Then rock and roll sucks.

There are great practitioners of both and there are shitty practitioners of both. Depends on my choices. I'll take the Dead Kennedys over a glam band like Bon Jovi anyday, but I'd rather see AC/DC over Green Day as well.

Green day is not Punk. I was a punk rocker in the old days. I'm 41. Good Punk bands are stuff like the Sex Pistols, the Ramones, the Damned, the New York Dolls, Black Flag, Dead Kennedys and The Clash. Punk is an offshoot of good ol' 3 chord rock.

Btw, what most people like doesn't make the music better - it just makes it more popular. . .

See now, I would argue that Green Day is what happens when punk tries o go mainstream, just like Bon Jovi is what happens when rock tries to go mainstream. That's why I said it all depends on what you're listening to inside those genres.

As much as I like Punk (DK, the Clash, etc...) I'll have to go Rock. Not Bon Jovi *shudder* but Led Zeppelin and other 60s/70s rock bands

Incertonia, punk isn't ment to be "mainstream". . .If it is, it ain't Punk, pure and simple. I think I got a little more clout here, I was in the scene!

Don't like the older punk as much, so definitely rock, most notably AC/DC and Rush.

I think you can say the same for any genre. Who's more real on the blues scene? B. B. King or the Spin Doctors? Who's more real on the rock scene? Led Zeppelin or Warrant? Who's more country? Willie Nelson or Shania Twain?

You see what I'm getting at?

Look Incertonia, as far as I'm concerned, Punk was over by 84' and I mean completely over. There were a lot of "crossovers" between 80' - 84' with New Wave (which I also liked), Alternative and Early Electronica. Green Day just doesn't "feel" the same, or sound the same, you understand? I simply don't consider Green Day punk. What can I say?

I dunno, GD isn't that bad, certainly not Bon Jovi levels of Glam, but certainly a step down from The Clash and Stiff Little Fingers, I think the two worst examples of musical bastardization are Good Charlotte and Avril Lavigne.

But I'm gonna have to say a tie, my love of Led Zeppelin is rivaled by that of the Ramones, while DK and AC/DC are running for second, with the vandals and The Clash as a distant third

Some say DK was not really Punk - they were a class all to it's own. But generally, My favorite stuff is between 76' - 84' After that it got kinda "watered down" to much or dissapeared all togerther.

There is the occasional band that I like that came much later, such as L7 (they kick ass!) Miss Kitten and the Hacker (sounds just like the old New Wave I used to listen too- that is, cold and cynical, no future etc...) and Harvey Danger. But such bands are few and far between. . .

You must also understand, that you generally become less and less maleable, impressionable etc. . . as you age. It's a given.

punk is a subgenre of rock. like new wave, metal, emo, classic et c.

i'm more on the side of liking all rock though, which of course means that i enjoy punk as well...

I know the feeling--I'm in my mid-30s, and the older I get, the more I realize just how much music released today is just a retread of older, and I think better, stuff.

I'm a bluesman myself, and I think it's been even longer since there was a truly new school blues performer.

So by rock and roll you mean the crap that dirty people with long hair, and who have teenage moustaches listen to? Then rock and roll sucks.

are you a rap fan by any chance? or a pop fan?

in either case, i'll take a swing:
rap: is that the crap that those idiots who claim to be from the ghetto and buy pants way too big for them, wear them around their asses and put do-rags on their heads and go on about how black they are even though they're really pasty listen to?
pop: is that the kind of crap that the little 12 year olds who can't differentiate between real emotion in music and synthetic crap marketed specifically to sell listen to?

i like rock and i don't have long hair (i used to but i'm a girl, i'm allowed to have long hair by social conventions anyways) nor do i have a moustache (again, with being a girl comes a lack of facial hair) nor am i a teenager.

Hmmm...out of curiosity, what genre would Dream Theater be? One of my friends is an absolute fanatic for them. I know they arn't punk, but I'm wondering if they're a subdivision of rock.

Oh, and I went with rock. Ramones and Sex Pistols and all them are great, but...Dude. Led Zepplin.

Okay, so your about my age then. The blues isn't bad I listen to it from time to time - at least I know there's talent in it. I also like some Jazz.

Lou Reed and the Velvet Underground is great stuff too - and we can't forget ol' Iggy Pop, now can we!

Dakini: I know axactly how you feel about all the garbage that's pumped out to the masses like so much vomit these days. Believe me, I was around when it started - which btw, hurts even more. . . :(

There are so many different punk and rock and roll bands that sound totally different. There is no clear cut answer to which genre is better. I like some punk. I like some rock. I hate some punk and I hate some rock. No way to decide this argument.
