How do either of these qualify as cutlery?

depends on the application, though neither is cutlery. also do you mean a metal or rubber spatula, two very differnt things, but either way the wooden spoon wins becuase of it ability to smack a fool

Ah, but can you not smack a fool with a spatula as well?
On second thought, the wooden spoon is a better instrument for smacking, although the spatula is far better for egg and flapjack flipping.

you can smakafool with a spatula, but you are missing out on the sound effect. you can only get it with wood, trust me
Again it depends on the application. i cannot imagine tating soup witha spatula. Wait, actually I can remember tasting soup with a spatula, and it wasn't very sucessful. For those purposes to which either may be put that I can think of (well, stirring is about it besides the aforementioned foolsmacking) I prefer a wooden spoon, a wooden spoon has a better hand feel. Perhaps you could aid this poll by sugesting some uses for which one would either use a spatula or a spoon.

Good old wooden spoon gets my vote.
Before I reply I have a few questions:
1.Plastic spatula?
2.Rubber spatula?
3.Metal spatula?
4.Wooden spatula?
Plastic and rubber melt. Metal scratches non-stick pans, yet is great in stainless steel for bringing up the fond in de-glazing. Wood is a great all-around spatula, but hard to find. And then, if you are using a wooden spatula, the wooden spoon is almost a moot point.
I'm confused. I vote for metal tongs.
