Ok, well we all know how AIDS got started, but the question is was the spread of thise disease our own fault (western world here)?

I understand that a lack of contraception in Africa and South America has caused huge problems, but this thread is about the Western World.

Did same-sex behaviour cause the rapid spread of AIDS in countries like the USA, UK, Australia etc (Europe)? Or, is it far more complex and how?

AIDS is a complex thing and it is not correct to blame the spread of it on same sex relations as it has also been spread through opposite sex relations.

It's not because of same sex behavior, it's because of ALL unsafe sex behavior. AIDS is every bit as much a threat to the heterosexual community as to the gay community.

Not only does AIDS/HIV get transmitted by sex but you can get it from a blood transplant also. Twenty years ago no one tested you for it and people started getting get!

A recent study shows in Sydney, Australia, that the number of HIV/AIDS infected people has risen 6% in the past year. Almost all of those infected were homosexual.

Why, with all the education out there, are people still having unprotected sex! Especially homosexuals? Why! Don't they understand what can happen?

why dont they give out condoms in every prison? everyone knows people get raped there but with no condoms its like giving people a death sentence

It's simple from a biological standpoint, but not from a social or political one.

When I say it's simple biologically, i mean that the virus is transmitted in simply ways (namely, sexaul fluids and blood) that are more commonplace in nature than not. Example: most species are biologically driven to reproduce, and many species will lick the wounds of others. Thus, you have your epidemic.

Saying it is because of same-sex behavior opens up a slew of social and politcal theories, like saying that gay rights caused the spread. This isn't true, as homosexual activites have been present for almost all of recorded western history (as in the Romans etc). The only "new" thing that has furthered the cause of the AIDS virus spreading has been blood transfusions and IV drugs.

Then what of the statistics of homosexuals being more infected than homosexuals? That is mearly the unfortunate side-effect of preference. I don't mean that in any negative way, but assuming that male-male intercourse will be done anally, it exposes both to more blood vessels of their partners than in any other form of intercourse and puts them at higher risk. Simple.

The politics and social order needed to contain and end the spread are almost unreasonable. It would require mandatory testing and monitoring of each citizen's sexual exploits as not to spread the virus. No matter how high-minded a politician might be, there is no way a program that delves that deeply into personal matters could fly.

Personally, I don't think that this was "brought upon" the western world any more than any other STD or social issue. It is a result of natural forces (namely human and viral biology) and natural human stupidity (namely poor choices).

Because sex is still taboo to an extent. People don't think they're at risk and many people who are infected don't know it. There have been sharp increases in HIV infections in Australia, the UK and Eastern Europe as well as the former U.S.S.R. because it was seen largely as a "gay American" disease, even though recent tallies clearly show the largest brunt of the epidemic is being shouldered by heterosexual women in Africa (where sex is most certainly not spoke of).

why dont they work to prevent prison rape? its not like everyone there isnt already locked upbecause prison guards use rape as a means of social control in the jails

If homosexuals caused and spread AIDS, then why would so many other non-gay people have it?

The spread of AIDS is a tragedy brought on by ourselves. AIDS is particularly dangerous because it is spread by doing things we are instinctively driven to do.

AIDS was a biological weapon. Three different variants occured in three places worlds apart at the same time- Africa, Thailand and San Fransisco. It's genetic code appears to be a structural cut and paste of the Human T-Cell Leukaemia virus, which isn't fatal, and a virus whose name eludes me that only affects sheep, but the symptoms are very similar to AIDS. With the HTLV genes added, it could affect humans.


Lol, conspiracy theories. I was researching AIDS one day and came across that theory. Ordinarily I would have shrugged it off as crap, but you gotta wonder when theres that evidence.

Tell you what. You don't ever have sex or do drugs (HIV through blood transfusions is VERY rare these days) and you won't get it, guaranteed. Now, leave the rest of us alone.

There's something to this. I believe that homosexuals get tested more often than other people, meaning that there are a lot of cases that are as of yet undetected.

Still, there's no question that there's a greater risk of contracting HIV from anal sex. Anyone that would do so with an person they hardly know without protection is a moron.
