Ray Charles was a truly excellent talent. He lived a very hard life. Blind by 7 years old, on his own by 15, but he beat the odds and believed we could all be what we really wanted to be. I am sad at his passing. A true American icon!

Now THERE'S a guy the world will mourn...

He died at least 10 years too young too.

I'm in shock that this happened. Ray Charles was one of the best jazz/blues/rock greats that ever lived. He'll be missed deeply.

I had the distinct pleasure of seeing Ray at Ottawa Bluesfest in '98. I had a horrible head cold, but I dragged my ass down there because I figured it would probably be my only chance to see him perform. I'm glad I did.

He was true legend, and an amazing performer. He beat every impediment that life through at him and emerged a star.

He may be gone, but his music will live on for generations.

Rest in Peace Ray.

In addition to being a inspiration and a great talent, I never saw Ray Charles without a smile on his face. He will be missed.

ray charles... wow, there is a man who i actually respect. we've lost two big figures this week... how inspiring he is and was, how much soul he has, how powerful and influential he is... in the words of Cannot Think of a Name in this thread previously, "ray charles was a god and now god is dead".

amen

When I did a blues show on student radio at the University of Arkansas, Ray Charles was a constant--my favorites were "What I'd Say", "Georgia On My Mind" and "Baby, It's Cold Outside."

There are a lot of them--I also like the version with Dean Martin/Pia Zadora and I saw Buster Poindexter do a version on SNL one time and couldn't tell you who his partner was, but that one was awesome too.

Somehow music sounds just a tad bit hollower now..a bit less part of the soul....with Ray Charles' passing..an era of music unsurpassed now is gone forever....Rest easy Ray, you can put down your instrument...that is unless you can teach those angels in the heavenly choir some rthym and blues..

One of the first musicians to break the colour divide within America.

A fantastic artist with a philosophers soul and the devil in his fingers.

He will be missed.
