Isn't Charles Bronson generally termed Powerviolence?

Also. FDB168, what sort of noise do they do?

Powerviolence? Eh?

Noise is a loose term. They aren't like Merzbow or anything. They play cheap synthesized beats and say random things over them.

Powerviolence? Eh?

Genre practically invented by Man Is The Bastard AKA Charred Remains AKA Neanderthal. Two distorted bass guitars and arhythmic drums punctuated by blastbeats.

I would say that Charles Bronson are more of a New York Hate Core influenced band - taking their direction from Born Against and Rorschach, but it has been a while since I heard anything by them, so I could be mistaken.

Powerviolence as a style has been stretched to include alot more then that though, basically any 'old school' sounding grindcore with alot of feedback that uses high pitched guitars and often octave chords falls under powerviolence now.

Charles Bronson tend to fall under that catagory. So do combatwoundedveteran.

Horse the Band - hardcore with a synthesizer

That sounds really familiar...I think one of those guys lived in my dorm freshman year. Them or Horsecop...something about a horse..

Fingertight - alt rock/hardcore-ish
Denial - alt/pop rock
Scarve - semi-hardcore

Nah, I never saw that, but it's hard to get ahold of any GG Allin material nowadays, at least the way I've been looking. He lived and died exactly the way he wanted to. I never went to one of his concerts either. It would have been nice, except that the back row would have been where most of the audience would want to be, rendering it the front row...;)

Modest Mouse is very popular around here, mostly with the emo crowd.
New Pornographers, I've heard of, but not sure exactly who they are.
"volcano, im still excited! " - No idea on this one.
Weakerthans - Pretty obscure, but I think I've seen their name around.
Led Zeppelin: Wtf? Anyone who's lived in the use in the last few decades has heard of them.
Heltah Skeltah - No idea.

I have enough to fill about one crate, unfortunately. My dream is to inherit my dad's collection, though. At least to get him to loan me the collection so I can put it on CD and listen to it. Great vintage late 60's to early 80's. Lots of things I'd like to have. Some of the things he DID have that would have been worth something are long gone, too. Hence the rant about thieving "friends". I don't lend stuff out anymore. If I can't make a copy, you can't have it.

if you want advice from a seattleite that goes and sees quite a bit of awesome music, listen to our radio station - kexp.org. you can decide for yourself that way. john in the morning is great, stevie is too (right after john).
the whole sasquatch lineup this year was great. starting there, try:
death cab for cutie, postal service (same singer, ben gibbard, both bands are great and you should go buy the postal service RIGHT NOW)
dismemberment plan (emergency and i is their best record imho. they broke up last summer unfortunately)
the rapture (think indie rock that you can dance to)
minus the bear (one of my favorites, they are mathy like dplan but still completely different)
the shins (i think someone already mentioned them)
seachange (a newer band of young folks from nottingham, i think they show great potential)
the thermals (trio from portlandia)
constantines (torontonians that sound like nothing i've ever heard out of canadia - the singer has a soulful voice)
interpol
tv on the radio

i've got a lot more... these arent obscure in my part of the country but judging from the posts of others maybe you havent heard of them before. i didnt list anyone on here that i dont think is really solid.

Somehow not surprising. They seem to have a quirky sense of humor. It's what drew me to their music in the first place. I've heard of Deadsy and Sisters of Mercy, but I'll have to wait until I ain't broke to get an album.

Some of the following are obscure, others are well known in the UK but probably not the US:

Elliott Smith
Beth Gibbons & Rustin Man
Elbow
PJ Harvey
Bloc Party

And an unlikely one from the past... Kate Bush. Seriously, she's a genius.
Ifracombe
10-06-2004, 15:39
btw, the weakerthans lead singer used to be in propaghandi. but they arent as.... well you know as they were

I guess obscure all depends on where you live. You know that song "One Great City"? Ya, that's where I live. Please pity me. I'm going to go listen the song, cry, and dream about moving away now.....

My fav would have to be Hawksley Workman. I don't think he's so obscure in Europe, he's kind of recognized in Canada, and ignored in the US, sadly. Amazing talent, and probably has the best stage presence and performances of anyone these days. I took rap fans to see him and he won them over.

Yeah, the distance between these two in what they are trying to achieve musically is not as far as might first be imagined.

Melt-Banana
Yellow Machinegun

The Boredoms

Good taste! Especially MB, as that was what 1st lept to my mind!

Other suggestions (may or may not fit waht you call obscure)
The Blue Hearts - J-punk, late 80's
Shang-Shang Typhoon - poppy Okinawan folkish. Upbeat. One of my favorite covers of "Let it Be".
Bakufu Slump - old
Genbaku Onanies
Thee Michelle Gun Elephant - J-pop/punk
Mad Capsule Markets - hardcore punk, metal, techno mix

The Grassy Knoll - Acid/Fusion Jazz, dub mix. What the sound track to the X-Files should have been, had they had any balls

Screaming Jay Hawkings - had a few hits, but I would say he may fit the obscure definition as he isn't so well remembered, check his take on "I Love Paris" - he burns it down, bad.

Obscure music? Ask my father. He is a "bluegrass" connosieur(sp?). He goes to festivals, buys CD's, plays the music on his guitar, etc.

I quickly looked through here but I did not see any reference to the Residents. If you like obscure and experimental music then this is the band you need to hear. Unfortunately, the distributor they were using recently decided to drop everything except Scandinavian folk music, so all their albums are out of print right now except for the few that Mute will be re-releasing soon.

By the way, don't ask me to really explain their music. The group has been around for 32 years now and drastically change their sound from album to album. Truly a band that needs to be hears to be appreciated.

If you are looking for just a fun band that nobody seems to have heard of, try the Budget Girls. They are a couple of American go-go dancers being backed by the British band Thee Headcoats on most of their songs. Neither of them can sing but the music is a blast.

And, on death metal, one of the best I've heard recently is Impaled Nazarene. They are a Finnish group that has been around for a little over a decade now and do some awesome work. Also try Bal-Soggoth (possibly have the spelling wrong) if you really like to see where black metal can go if given the chance.

Black metal , and at least five years over a decade...

Also try Bal-Soggoth (possibly have the spelling wrong) if you really like to see where black metal can go if given the chance.

Bal-Saggoth, and they call themselves battle metal. It's somewhere between epic power metal and death metal.

How do the John McLaughlin post-Mahavishnu LPs hold up? I haven't been particularly impressed with the one compilation of his solo work from the seventies that I have, despite loving the Mahavishnu Orchestra.

If you don't have a copy of the Mahavishnu John McLaughlin/Carlos Santana LP "Love Devotion Surrender", you should get one ASAP (EDIT: AH< I JUST NOTICED IT ON YOUR LIST THERE NOW). I also strongly recommend the Mahavishnu Orchestra with the London Symphony Orchestra LP "Apocalypse" - it isn't really the Mahavishnu Orchestra anymore, Jan Hammer is no longer playing on it, but it still goes some very interesting places.

Esthero - amazing vocals
Chicane - great mello sound
Django Reinhardt - Great old school guy, played the guitar with like 3 fingers or something
Doves
Stereophonics
Starsailor
Flunk - much like Royksopp
Groove Armada - also arent THAT obscure, but few know who they actually are, its good dance and chill out music
Lovage
Morcheeba
Supreme Beings of Leisure
Mandalay - great female vocals
Weekend Players - chill music
Zero 7 - same as above
Thievery Corporation - Im from DC, gotta mention the locals
Thunderball - a thievery type band
Tosca and Peace Orchestra - solo "bands" of Kruder and Dorfmeister

I could name many more, but if people know more from this type of genre especialy more of the chill out groups, pleaes share

More obscure bands:

Swans - industrial
Killing Joke - industrial or synth-pop, depending on which album
Diamanda Galas (not a band, but a singer/vocalist) - pretty much just vocals, she doesn't need a band.
Neurosis - punk/post-punk
Slant 6 - D.C. area punk
TSOL - punk
Sinergy - power metal, similar to Lacuna Coil
Bolt Thrower - death metal
You Am I - alternative (I know they might not be obscure in Australia, but they are here)

Bolt Thrower - death metal

I rediscovered the pleasures of listening to Bolt Thrower last month when I picked up a copy of their Peel Sesssions 12". Hideous slipshod production, and whatever engineer set up the compressor on it should be taken out and publicly humiliated, but that aside, I had forgotten how good they were. I think I actually like them more now than 10+ years ago.

i stand corrected, thank you

It wasn't really intended as an "I'm right, you're wrong" kind of correction by the way, even with the partial use of his ring and little fingers Django Reinhardts playing is still quite incredible both from listening and technical viewpoints. I still find it hard to believe that someone with a fullt functional set of fingers would be able to play stuff like that.
