Unbelievably Angry

I am beyond pissed at the current moment time, so much so that I can not remember the last time that I was this angry. However, I want to ask if the reason that I am uncontrollably angry is warranted.

Here’s the situation, a few days ago my boss finally noticed that I am left handed, and since that time whenever I do something he’s been telling me to use my right hand. So today he said it one too many times and I told him enough, that I would continue to use my left hand since that is the hand that I am the most comfortable using. To my surprise he snapped at my, tell me that I am no longer allowed to do certain jobs, and that when I use my left hand that I look like a “Fucking retard” and so on. I was this close to quitting on the spot, but some how managed to keep my cool, I will be giving my two week notice tomorrow.

So do you think that I’m over reacting, or that I’m justified in both my anger, as well as quiting

No, don't lose your cool. Counter him. Get him in major trouble for discrimination. It's so pointless he'll be in major trouble.

Document it. Tell him you will need that in writing with his signature on it. If he's dumb enough to give it to you, find a lawyer and sue the company for discrimination. If he doesn't give it to you, then you won.

Your boss is the effing retard. As someone previously said, knowing what your job and it's duties are would maybe shed some light on his stance against being a lefty. At face value though, he seems totally out of line.

Well, if you live in the US, you have a discrimination case if you wanted to go that far. You don't actually need to take it to a lawyer...that costs too much money. Rather, every state has a Human Rights Commission that you can talk to. That's free and they LOVE this sort of stuff. Of course, if you can get another job that pays around the same, its not really worth it to fight about the whole thing. Just flip him off on the last day, using your left hand of course, and go about your merry way.

And yes, there is differences in some machinery between left and right hands. As a left hander, I am blatantly aware of that. Scissors for one. Several types of school desks. Doors. Cars, both automatic and manual. There are also social difficulties. Ever shake hands?

But there's hope!!! Come...move to Left Hand, West Virginia!! A paradise in Roane County of 15,000 people. They'll treat you right....err, left.

Record all information, that is write down everything he says that is derogatory to your left-handedness. If he is stupid enough to put it in writing then all the better.
Once you have it documented then you can seek legal advice through a union or directly.

Does anyone else work at this place who may have heard what he says? If so, they may help you out...then again they may not!

thats a good idea, because that is undoubtedly discrimination and verbal abuse in a work environment.

Hmmm, I doubt that you could do anything in a high court because altough it is pretty F'ed up, being left handed is not a protected class of people. You might be able to check into the labor laws, Im not sure fo what they are in Canada, but lots of places dont require a reason to fire someone...pretty stupid huh.

Heres another one. Left handed guitars. They cost on average $200 more.

But its great being a lefty anyway. Just because its different.

I'd move to that place if I lived in the US...but oh well. Maybe on holiday one day.

Oh, and Tappee- Don't record or tape him in secret. That won't work in your favour if it comes down to a discrimination payout. But if you can, use the suggestion that said to get him to make the request in writing.

I think your boss must be old. The only reason most of us are right-handed anymore is because back in the day, they'd actively discourage kids who showed a left-handed tendency from using that hand for anything.

VERY uncool that he would discriminate against you for being left-handed. It doesn't make you "retarded" and it doesn't make you incompetent. Still, I'd say it's a personal thing on his part, and nothing to do with company policy. I'd talk to his higher-ups, and tell them what's been going on, ask for a transfer away from him, if it's possible. Tell them he's created a very hostile workplace for you.
10-06-2004, 07:01

Actually that's usually due to "employment at will" clauses in the employment contract, which allow either party to terminate the relationship without cause. What's wierd is that if they give a cause that is discriminatory then they are liable.

As I recall, people years ago brutally beat kids who tried to use their left hand rather than the right. People believed that the left hand was evil, and anyone who used it primary was possessed by the devil or some such nonsense. Anyway, I don't have any links or proof, just my memory of the class, but these kids eventually had severe psychological problems as adults. Just because they couldn't use the hand their brain's designed for.

Hope that you find something you can do about it (a talk with the labour relations board would not hurt). If not and you can afford it, quit. You shouldn't have to put up with that sort of s**t.

The Benifits of having two jobs. I didn't go in to work today and I got a call from my boss asking me if I was coming in. I said now, I quite. He acted all suprise, then said that what I was doing was fair to him and the company. I want to reach throught the phone a smack him. The bottom line is that it is his right to fire and hire who he deems fit. If you don't want to conform to the rules then you can go elsewhere. If I ever have my own business, I'll have a nice sign on the window about who is allowed into the store, that way there is no confusion and the wrong folks don't try to enter.

If you work hard and save the money and get your own business, it should be yours to run as you see fit.

When you get your own business you can post a sign " HELP WANTED: LEFT HANDED PEOPLE ONLY"

But if you're going to work for others, do what they say or find a new job.
