The oldest conspiracy theory here, this one even predates me. Is [violet] Max Barry?

A fairly pertinent thread on the topic is this one (http://www.nationstates.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=44769&start=0) Its currently 53 pages long, and if you ever ask a moderator about whether Max is [violet], they will almost undoubtably direct you to this thread. Anyone who has watched the British TV series "Yes Minister" will recognise this tactic: burying you with useless information to sap your will to discover the truth.

So lets ignore that thread, and instead blindly follow my lead as I indulge in hearsay and conjecture.

First of all, a piece of evidence against. Max, as you would assume from the name, is male. [violet] is usually referred to as "she". Naturally of course, this could just be a ploy.

Kandarin, in the thread I linked to before, sums up my next point pretty clearly

I think it makes more sense to think that [dredd], the more tech-based, less people-based admin, is Max Barry.

Yes Kandarin, it does make sense. Which should be your first clue as to why you're wrong. If only it were that simple. Examine the moderator sticky. (http://www.nationstates.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=102087) Listed as a retired mod but with an admin title: [mantle]. The first admin. [violet] is the second. [dredd] is a third. Now the idea of [dredd] being Max is thrown completely askew. We have three admin positions instead of two, so simple deduction fails us, and we end up back at square one.

I leave you to contemplate this, and will return with more information as and when I have it.

I'm disappointed Smoking Man. Such a simplistic analysis based on public information. Surely you cannot for one second believe that such a conspiracy would have been hidden in such a manner? Have you not looked into the shadows for the answer to this riddle?

Let's consider [violet] for a second. And let's consider the nature of this website. A place for political discussion created by an Aussie. Now, [violet] is fairly silent. Does [Violet] involve herself in political discussion? No. Have you EVERY met a silent Aussie? I didn't think so. No way [violet] is Max!

And Max would want to ensure that the discussions keep going. Therfore he must be involved. A player. An active player.

WE know that MAx leans liberal. That narrows it down.

Now how better to instigate discussion than in being extreme?

So, we are looking for an extreme liberal.

Max is an Aussie. Therefore Max is from "down under". What else, according to popular mythology lives "under"? Trolls! Sh*t, you can't pick up a fairy tale without having those suckers pop up from under bridges, under rocks, under bushes.....

So, Max is an active, uber-liberal troll feeding the odd post to insitgate discussion.

My personal favorite is that Violet is a friend, possibly romantic although more likely ex-romantic, of Max, that Max threw some work to setting up this site when he became a professional author. I question also those who claim positive knowledge of the gender of Violet.

Zeppistan, don't you feel that is rather redundant, given that max barry = 8 letters and [violet] = 8 letters? No, the identity of Max Barry will be revealed to those who can read between the lines, but not before the big reveal.


Back on topic. With great personal difficulty, using a telephoto lens and forged Forum 7 security pass, I have managed to obtain a picture of [violet]:

Now, clearly these are not the same people. But, as a player may have many puppets, an admin may have many faces.

Puppets... now thats an interesting point. Common knowledge, as well as Max himself says that Max used to play as the nation Maxtopia, but was inundated with telegrams, so allowed it to die. He now claims to play in secret. If this is true, then surely he could not be [violet], the speculation is too great. But wait. [violet] has no nation, and therefore no way to be telegrammed. The standard link, reproduced below, takes you back to your own nation.

Do I care who Max is? Not Really. Do I know who Max is - no. Do I have a theory who Max is - ah well, yes I do. I don't talk much or contribute to much of the dabates but I watch a lot and I have my own personal theory. I read the news and I read the threads and there is one person who has a all too similar tone of langauge that matches both. I also find it interesting that even the Mods pay homage to this person wich such language as "Wait until ### gets on line" or "### may have something to say about that".
But hey guys, I am in the process of consuming a third bottle os 1996 Semillion, Sauvignon Blanc so perhaps I can be excused for being criptic..

I think quite clearly, the question is not "Is Max Barry [violet]?", but "Does Max Barry exist at all?"

In a conversation with me that was unfortunately deleted when the fake Forum 7 was removed, SalsuaSecondus implied that Max Barry was the NationStates equivilent of Emmanual Goldstein, a character from George Orwell's 1984 who existance is... questionable, but is maintained as a fictional enemy for the populace. (A similar thing is going on in America with Osama Bin Laden). Goldstein is a necessary fiction, he has to exist so that Big Brother has a nemesis, so that the society is always at war. Sal's implication was that the same is true on NationStates, and that a plausible backstory is needed to provide structure, reason, a purpose for NationStates.

A lie. Sal, normally so honest and upfront, is deliberately misleading me. It was another passing referance that he made which revealed this to me... but I admit, I wasn't sure why. So I flew to Washington, and went to see an old friend of mine.

You know there was an australian mod a while back, I know he was a member or the Labour party. Im not sure if he still posts though. It could be him, and he was politically astute.
