It is sad that in England, Universities, Councils and other organisations are banning people from flying the English flag on the grounds that it might upset none English people or prove racially provocative.

It’s my country and my flag, just because it is also used by the right wing is that any reason to reinforce their claim to the flag? The cross of St George is your flag whatever your race, if your English or identify yourself as such.

Could not see this happening in the US or France for that matter!

The downside of "we must not upset anyone, or do anything that someone might find offensive" mentality. It is a bit like Tessa Jowell (sp?) at Christmas making sure that none of her cards said 'Christmas' on them, lest they offend none Christians. Because, sending Christmas cards that say "Merry Christmas" on them will make any Muslim who sees it feel like a stranger in a strange land.

Meh, fly it. And fly it high. And if you are asked to take it down, just point out you are doing it because you are open minded and have no problem with a Turk being the patron saint on England.

Actually it did happen in the US with the Confederate Flag (the Navy Jack).

Is this real, or is this just something cooked up by the Daily Mail's Department of Hysterical Fiction? I'm not sure that universities, councils etc. can ban people from flying English flags. They might be able to prevent such flags being flown from their own flagpoles, but that's a slightly different matter -- they own the poles, so they get to say what gets flown from them.

It is sad that far-Right thugs seem to have hijacked the English flag, and because of that many people right across Europe see it as a symbol of aggressive, racist hooligans and nothing more. But it's up to the vast majority of decent English people to reclaim it.

Probably.

NHS is the National Health Service, BUPA is a private health insurer.

Doubt it, it's a very British joke (seeing as the NHS and maybe BUPA are UK only) and its also a medical joke. I only understood it 'cos my sister and mum are doing first aid courses.....

Somewhat in answer to my own question, I found this article (http://news.scotsman.com/latest.cfm?id=2990745) in the Scotsman:

'Offensive' English Flag Banned
By Emma Gunby, PA News

A company has banned its workers from flying England flags from their cars in case it offends ethnic minorities, it was revealed today.

Bosses at a motor auctioneers in Liverpool ordered employees to remove the St George flags, which they had displayed in advance of the Euro 2004 tournament.

A spokesman for Liverpool Motor Auction Ltd said the ban had been imposed to maintain their “multi-national” corporate image.

He said: "A minority of employees who choose to park their vehicles on our main roadway entrance were asked to either remove the flags or park their vehicles elsewhere as the appearance of these vehicles was not in keeping with our professional and multi-cultural image."

A spokesman for the Muslim community in Liverpool said: "This does not make any sense. This is the English national flag and people have a right to fly it."

A few other articles seem to follow the same profile, in locations across England: a private company or council issues a ban; much indignation ensues, followed by a quote from a member of the Asian community supporting those who want to fly English flags. It's just one more instance of officialdom lagging behind the public mood. They are still stuck in a "St George's Cross = skinhead thug" mentality, whereas most of the English population seem to regard it as merely a national symbol. Good for them.

BTW, best of luck against the French... you'll need it. :P

I can't really explain it that well, but there is a joke going round based on BUPA's adverts, joking about how they are turning into a private NHS, and are making a lot of claims which make it sound like they believe they have a 100% cure rate. I can't explain it that well. But basically, he was saying you will either need the NHS or BUPA if you ever try to tear down a British/English flag in front of other Brits.

I can't really explain the joke and make it sound funny, or even that understandable. It's a bit of a didn't-get-it-first-time-won't-get-it-second-time thing.
