Not quite, but close. We are all AI constructs in a modelig program to see what the real world would be like if some basic attribute were different. We have been unable to ascertain what the initial divergent attribute is, however the concensus is that it goes along the lines of "what if people were not rational actors".

Face it : the Matrix films were descriptions of psychotic behaviour and episodes of delusion experienced by the central character - this is why the rationale in the background (humans as batteries, c'mon, check your physics) made absolutely no sense at all, it was all just the product of a fractured and violent mind.
