Thomas Jefferson hands down. People just remember FDR better since he is more recent.

Wasn't Roosevelt the man who wanted to declare war on Colombia for the Panama Canal?

he nearly went to WAR DAMMIT!

This would've been the only war in which I hoped Americans would die....thank god it never happened

but I can never forgive him for thinking of war.

I'm glad he dumped Republicans for his short-lived Bull Moose Party. He was an open rascist, overreacted to the rise of industrialists like Rockerfeller, and was all too eager to be involved in foreign affairs not concerning the US at all, like the Russo-Japanese war. It had absolutely nothing to do with the US or any of its allies, and yet Roosevelt himself was the mediator for peace.

Of that list, Polk was the best. He was the only leader strong enough to defend Texas from Mexico. Beforehand, Texas was an independent republic, with the US refusing to annex it because it didn't want to fight. Americans quickly changed their minds, however, when Manifest Destiny was fullfilled. It's sometimes crazy what the government has to do to convince people to do the right thing.

destroyed the White House on his first night
killed 3,000 British troops AFTER the war was over (when he was a General)

OK, why isn't abraham lincoln on there??

He's not on here because he's on the other poll with the frontrunners (there's two US President threads). These presidents are the "other guys" who deserve consideration as greatest but, because of the limitations of the number of poll choices, couldn't be fitted ont ot he origianal poll

(And I voted McKinley but I would happily accept T Roosevelt as the poll's winner, he was McKinley's successor and vice pres. after all, and he did what McKinley would've done....)

In a conflict that didn't even involve anyone close to us? It was an imperial petty war. Nothing was really at stake except the control of the Orient, and that didn't even involve our allies. Of course, he got involved in other foreign conflicts, like with Colombia. While I'm glad that the Panama Canal was built, the way Panama was liberated was disturbing.
