What team will you be supporting?
Freedom For Most

I'm from Scotland, but they're out,
Ireland went out too, so Wales were my only hope, they went out,
So I'm for THE MIGHTY LATVIA now!
LoL, look at the group Latvia have though.. Holland, Germany and the Czech Rep.

After seeing England - Japan I thought it looked like England would go out 1st round, but the Iceland game was pretty impressive.

I still can't see England beating France though, and I can see Rooney getting sent off.

"Knowing nothing about Euro 2004, I wonder if either Liechtenstein or Andorra have teams. What about mighty San Marino?"
I don´t know either, but I think it is entirely possible.
I ask when I´m in Liechtenstein next time
If they have one I don´t even know whether they sent them for the qualifications for the tournament.

Coming to the topic:
I like the Czech republic as well as Croatia. But since the Croatians are in the group together with France and England it is rather unlikely they come further :(
I also like the Netherlands.
I actually expected them to win against Germany. That was a great dissapointment for me just to see a draw. :? well: just partly since I`m german
I don´t thing Germany is going to win.
They are more focusing on 2006 on the WC which takes place in Germany.

I would like to see the Netherlands or the Czech republic winning the Euro 2004.

Um......why am I stupid then?

Liechenstein is a country.

Andorra, I understand, achieved full independence from the co-rulership of France and Spain in 1993, though was still largely independent for the 700 years previous to state.

San Marino has been a republic since 301 A.D. but I believe its foreign policy is covered through Italy. I imagine that is in a similar fashion to Scotland's relationship with the United Kingdom.

As they are all classified as sovereign, why is it a stupid question?

I was merely making reference to their size in relation to the rest of the European nations.

Oh, and before you call someone stupid....um...its "countries" and not "countrys."

Very good knowledge of politics.
Andorra is fully independent since 1993/94. However: the Frech president and the bishop of Urgel are the two Heads of state with only representative functions since 1993/94. Currency: Euro (french and spanish coins)

Liechtenstein has a close relationship to Switzerland. After world war I it formed a customs union and a currency union with its "big" neighbour. Switzerland is also conducting the foreign policy for Liechtenstein on their behalf.
The countries you mentioned are all sovereign states. That´s a difference to Scotland which is a part of the UK. The only sovereignity they got are the football teams. Well: and a bit since the devolution under Blair.
But it isn´t a sovereign state. It is part of the UK.

Thanks for explaining. I've always found European history and the changing lines on the map to be fascinating. I'd love to hear more about why Scotland is a part of the United Kingdom some day. That was never covered in any of my history classes while I was in school. I even took several European history classes in college and it was still never addressed. My knowledge on Scottish history is very shaky at best.

James VI, King of Scots, inherited the English throne in 1603 when Elizabeth I died childless. The two nations continued with separate governments until 1707, when -- for a substantial sum of money -- the Scottish parliament voted to amalgamate with the English one after a lot of the MPs lost a lot of money on a failed colonial adventure in Darien in South America. This was of course long before democracy, so in essence a few dozen Scots nobles sold the nation. Nothing to be terribly proud about but that pretty much sums it up.

"The English steel we could disdain
Secure in valour's station,
But we are bought and sold for English gold,
Such a parcel of rogues in a nation."

But it's all history now and frankly those people who think it's worth bearing a grudge about should really get out more -- which is not to say that there aren't valid arguments for contemporary Scottish independence. But that's a whole other thread. :)

As for Euro 2004: difficult to say. The Swedes have been impressive, as have the French, when they could be bothered. Latvia were unlucky not to get something from the match against the Czech Republic, but I doubt they'll be able to keep it up. Spain could be a dark horse -- although that's always been true and they never seem to get it together when it counts.

France.

OOC Joke: However I have my reservations about a France vs Germany match. I get the feeling that Germany will either stomp all over the French team, or that the French team will forfeit the match just as the germans walk onto the field

@Sammi,

I deepy appreciate your support.
Germany has to win against the Czech Republic. Then it is going to the quarter final anyway. Otherwise it completly depends on the results of the others.
I don´t thing that Germany can win the tournament. We have too many too young and inexperienced players. But there are some great talents for the WC 2006.

Seems the Dutch are going to win against the Czech Republic. They are already leading 2 - 0 after 20 minutes.

That would mean the following for the points in group D
Netherlands 4 points 2 goal difference
Czech Republic 3 " 1 " "
Germany 1 " 0 " "
Latvia 1 " 0 " "

Germany has to win against the Czechs and Latvia should not win against Netherlands (draw or loose). Then Germany would go to the quarter final.

Hey - you could be a commentator!

Being Irish, it is my patriotic duty to support whoever is playing England. And who said tribalism isn't fun?

Zinedine Zidane - merci. The Swiss? Ah well, they knocked us out in qualifying, so it's not that bad seeing them fail to defeat England. On second thoughts - shame on you Swiss! Shame on you! Maybe you should stay completely neutral in football as well as politics.

C'mon the Croatians! Ireland expects you to do your duty!

wow, what a game :D :D
The Dutch were leading 2 - 0 and then got defeated 2 - 3

The situation in group D is now as following:
Czech Republic 6 points 2 goal difference
Germany 2 points 0 " "
Netherlands 1 point 0 " "
Latvia 1 point 0 " "

The Czech Republic is already qualified for the quarter final. Whatever happends in its game against Germany it is going to remain on place 1 of group D.

But what other team is going to qualify for the quarter final? The question is completly open.
The Netherlands, Latvia and Germany could all get place 2.

If the Netherlands achieves only a draw against Latvia    and Germany achieves at least a draw against the Czech Republic Germany would be qualified.
If however the Netherlands win against Latvia Germany would need to win against the Czech Republic. Otherwise Germany would be out.
If Germany wins against the Czech Republic it would for shure go to the quarter final
However: that´s going to be very difficult  . But propably a 1 - 0 is possible.
The Czechs must be tired after today

Today playing at EC:

Russia - Greece
Spain - Portugal.

The portugese coach said in a telephon conversation to tricky journalists: it´s war: I don´t talk to the Spanish now. It is war.

Well: so far after 5 minutes it is standing 0 - 0

Russia-Greece

Russia shot 1 goal in the second minute of the game. So far: 1 - 0 for Russia.
The Greece were actually seen as the favorites.

What suprises me is that Latvia held Germany to a 0-0 draw

if one checks the stats and sees the shots on goal, the Germans have four or five times as many as the Latvians, their goalie and defenders must be badass

Portugal-Spain 1 - 0
The host Portugal is qualified  , Spain is out  . The portugese coach has "won" the war.

Greece-Russia 1 - 2
Altough of that: Russia is out. Greece is qualified.

Points in group A:
Portugal 6 goals: 4:2
Greece 4 goals: 4:4
Spain 4 goals 2:2
Russia 3 goals 2:4

Portugal qualified on place 1, Greece on place 2   . Well: at least one german already archieved the qualification - the greece national coach is Otto Rehhagel from Germany.
But I remain hopeful for Tuesday: Germany - Czech Republic  :
The best of course is if the Netherlands only achieve a draw against Latvia

"What suprises me is that Latvia held Germany to a 0-0 draw

They were indeed. The latvians were playing very defensive. When the germans started an attack the always had about 8 players (sometimes even more) near the goal. They closed the room very good.
Germany is playing defensive themselves. Playing against another defensive team is pretty difficult, especially if they are that defensive and closing the rooms very good.
However: the german attacks were a bit too slow (especially the counter-attacks after the few situations when the latvians were attacking the german goal. They also played to much in the centre. There were too little attacks from the wings.
Well: and they failed too succed in the opportunities they had. :( :(
