I'm spoiled.............so what?

I am a spoiled child. I admit it freely. I have never had a hard days work in my life (referring to physical work), I have never wanted for food, my parents have always kept me well stocked with the latest technological gadgetry, and we live in what was once the richest county in America (refering to within the past decade, and the United States of America).

My question: What does this matter?

I have heard people speak that spoiled children are rude, impolite, selfish, etc. Apparently we have no idea of the value of a dollar and can contribute nothing to society, due to our inability to compete in a business world where everything isn't handed to us. We are all arrogant and self-serving, believing anybody of lower monetary wealth to be below our level in life.

If this is all true, then why do I currently hold two part time jobs? Why is it that I quit working for my father (who owns his own business) so that I could gain real-world experience (where if I screw up it isn't a relative who I report to)? Why do I save every penny I make and make sure that all debts (both owed by and to me) are paid promptly? Why do I volunteer at the soup kitchen to help feed the hungry? Why do I keep a charity donation box right in my very bedroom? Why is it that I volunteer for the Office of Emergency Management at no pay and for no benefits?

I may be spoiled, but that doesn't make me any less of a good person.

Now you understand one of the myriad of things I attempt to say on NS:

YOUR STEREOTYPICAL LIES ARE FALSE AND MEANINGLESS!

Theres this little place called "College".
Its where you decide who your going to be, and then you grow up and become that person.
Occasionally, some people learn while they are there.

Think about who you want to be while your there.

I'd be working for my dad if i was you. I have non ending problems. Neer got a brake, so i'd die to have the 'good life'. I live with my family, i work.. but still.. it's hard, i loathe the capitalistic system. Yea, because i never got my opportunity. Oh well, i'm an individual, i don' have to tag along 1,000 anti-capitalists in order to loathe the system on my own behalf.

Where you headed SD? My school starts then too.

Those who hold the wealth are least aware of it <-- not in reference to you, but the rich really have to fight this mantra which invariably guides their personalities.

I don't know if you really were spoiled, Klonor. From the sounds of it your parents imposed some discipline on you in your childhood. Of course, your childhood isn't really over yet for a little while, no offense. The kids I work with have behavioral problems because their parents gave them everything without ever asking them to do anything for it or wait for it, and they were never told "no". That is actually a form of neglect. It's abdicating parental responsibility, and kids don't benefit from that. It actually does them no favors because they get no real lessons on how to function in the real world as adults.

There's a difference, and I believe that it's not impossible for people to grow up into good people with more than others had, provided that they are taught some discipline over themselves. Hell, I don't consider myself to have been spoiled, but compared to a cambodian, maybe I was. I don't think I'm a particularly bad person. That's my two cents, anyway.

There's nothing wrong with being spoiled; it's when you disregard the fact that people like myself have worked and been on their own for their whole lives that we get a bit angry.
