EDUCATION: FREE, SECULAR & COMPULSORY?

08-06-2004, 02:35
I believe this thread will apply to all nations that actually have an education system (I assume that since you have internet acces and can write then you live in an educated nation)...

Should education be free, secular and compulsory (to what age)? There seems to be a lot of debate in public about school funding and how schools should be run.

I think education should be forced through grades 1-9. But I dont think it should be free though, maybe for families living under the proverty line.

Education should be both free and voluntary.

Compulsary until high school is completed, and it should be free. It should also talk about every religion, portraying them neither in a positive nor negative light. If merely evolution is taught then they are teaching atheism and thus violating the fact that the government (at least here in America) can not support or disapprove of religion. Or they can not teach evolution.

Free?

Ok I'll just go pick a few $50 bills of my money tree over there.

How can it be free?

Evolution is not atheism - it is the best explanation that science can provide. At least get your facts straight before you decide to post trash. Some atheists disbelieve evolution too.

Meanwhile, at least in my public school, the fact that other views are held was mentioned. Unfortunately, there is no actual science behind them and thus the best you can do in a science class is mention them.

Since you want to teach Creationism and completely confuse students as to what science actually is by implying that it is (a) merely reading the Bible or (b) seeking evidence for a certain conclusion and ignoring all other evidence, should we also teach Xenobiology? This is a religious view as well.

Yes, but in evolution the way they teach it, it makes it appear as if there was no god/gods.

Funded by taxes, available to everyone, compulsatory up to, but not including 9th grade, where upon entrance exams will be given for high school admission. Those not passing the exams will have the choice of going to trade schools instead to learn real skills. High school will be challenging and actually set kids up for college. The high schools and trade schools will also be funded by taxes and everyone will be given the chance to do either. Trade school leads to a job, high school leads to college. College leads to a degree, and a better job that trade school (most likely). Real education, real skills, real aplication.

Yes, but in evolution the way they teach it, it makes it appear as if there was no god/gods.

Evolution is based off fossil records, genetic studies, and a score of other things. It reflects these finding. If you do not see any god(s) playing into that, then that is not the problem of science.

I believe in the standard US system of education. Mandatory schooling for children K-12. Then, they decide if they want to go to college or not. Public or private, as long as they are in attendance.

The only bit I'd change is for kids 18 and over would still be made to go to school to obtain a diploma instead of letting them drop out when they become an "adult."

Perhaps astronomy should also be banned from the education system, as the real motion of the planets disagrees with the Bible (refer to the persecution of Galileo).

Psychiatry should be banned as it discourages the belief in possession by demons and withcraft.

Medicine should be banned, as it is only people "playing at being god". Faith healing should be good enough for all true believers.

Literacy should be frowned upon, as people may read books or articles which disagree with the Bible.

Perhaps blinkers for the young or easily led should also be considered.

Just get some new teachers and some new PARENTS and things should be fine.
