I fly to America on Friday (yay) but I don't exactly enjoy flying. I'm not so scared that I refuse to fly... but jeeesh I grip those seats so tight as we're taking off.

Anyone else scared of flying that can offer some advice on how to quell the fear?

Ta very much

look at it this way. you are far more likely to be killed or involved in a car crash than in a plane crash. and i think a car crash wpould be much worse

I have a philosophy,if i die,you die too

Im kinda scared. I fly for the first time on Wednesday. I go from Savannah to Atlanta. (where i have an hour and a half wait for my next flight to leave) Then from Atlanta to Memphis. I'm flying to Memphis to spend the summer with my best friend. This is my first time flying, and I am going by myself. I'm kinda scared but then again I'm not. I mean...there is always that thought in the back of your head, and the possibility of your plane crashing. But my main fear is getting lost in the airport in Atlanta.Because if I get lost, then I will end up missing my plane!! Oh...did i mention that my birthday is also wednesday!? I get to fly on my birthday all by myself! With my luck my plane will crash and I will die on my 16th birthday.

Flying a plane is overall easier and safer than driving a car, believe it or not. *Speaks from experience*

Every holiday I take a two hour trip from Queensland to Victoria then back again. Really I don't see how you can be scared, but I have been flying since I was 5 :D

I really don't like flying as I'm scared of heights. Guess my ancestors didn't spend much time away from ground level.

Well I didn't like the idea of it for a while after I saw the movie Castaway.

I wouldn't worry about stalls or engine outs for an over seas flight.
1st) Regulations and operating procedures for passenger aircraft tend to stay away from flight conditions that would cause a power-on stall. And as long as you have a working engine, stalls are simple enough to get out of.

2nd) You're aircraft will be multi engine, and even if you lose some engines, it'll still fly. (The pilot will have to adjust for additional yaw and decrease in airspeed, but it'll still fly.) Furthermore alot of planes are built with alot of redundancy in mind. (You can lose the main power system, and you'll still have 2 backup systems to go)

3rd) You're chances of dying in an aircraft related accident are far less than those in an automobile crash.

4th) Suggestions: I'd say sleep. Go to sleep once you get on the plane or just try to relax.

I personally love flying (do it frequently to and from college) and am only a week or so away from getting my private license. It's pretty damn fun.
Not much deters me from it, not even 9-11. (Would have flown that very day just to show those bastards), but that's a story for a different thread.

Well said.

On a side note: I was going for a private pilots licence, but couldn't afford to keep up the lessons :(

Well, if you die, can I have your stuff? I know you live close to me, as I have been stalking you alot. You've got a nice bedroom.

Nope not afraid of flying

I've flown in everything from large jets to small mircolight aircraft (where the wings and the bit you sit in are connected by one rather small bolt).

I even flew about a week after 11/9, was more woried about being arrested when trying to entre the US for being an anoying liberal or some such peice of nonsense.

I know that statistics are no much comfort, i still get nervious in turbulance, i'd just buy a nice book and read that for short flights (hour or two) or sleep.

I'm scared to death of flying, even though i've never done it...Perhaps i'm scared of it because i haven't ever done it...dunno.

What you might want to do is stay up long enough to be so tired that you'll fall asleep before the plain takes off. Its what I once did when I had a long flight ahead of me to Mexico City. Not because I'm afraid of flying, on the contrary, but so as to escape the boredom that always seems to accompany me on a long flight. I woke up a good two hours before landing. Best damn flight I ever had :)

You can look at all the statistics in the world and they will tell you flying is safer than almost anything but that doesn't stop the heart beating like a mad thing.
I know because despite having flown thousands and thousands of miles over the last 15 or so years I still get scared when they fire up the engines.
So I went to my GP and told her about it and she gave me some pills to take to take the edge off the fear.
I am getting to the stage where I don't need them now but they really helped fpr a while.
Try it.
It worked for me at least.

i fly fairly often
im not scared of flying nor do i get airsick
but
if you take one of those 24-hour antinausea pills (brand name BONINE but i use generics) it takes the edge off both problems.

i make my sister take them too. shes a bit phobic about everything and she is never scared on the plane anymore.

no prescription necessary. costs less than $10

I've been flying since I was really little and I went to canada (from the UK) to visit relatives when I was 1 or 2 so flying has never bothered me at all unless i feel ill or can't sleep on long flights.

Those terrorists don't scare me. If we stay locked up fearing in our houses, they win. That is not how I want to live my life!!!
