Our sincerest condolences to his family. May he rest in peace. He has earned it.

He spent his life tirelessly fighting communism and its political censorship. Such as:

Good riddance, Ronald Reagan!

Good news today as Infoshop News has learned that former U.S. president and war criminal, Ronald Reagan, has finally died. Reagan's popularity as president has long been inflated by right wing propgandists. Reagan was responsible for the gutting of the American social safety net. He was an active opponent of unions and snitched on his fellow actors during the 1950s, when he served as head of the Screen Actors Guild. Reagan was responsible for a series of covert wars in Central America, which resulted in the deaths of tens of thousands. While never convicted in the Iran-Contra scandal, his underlings sold weapons to Iran to pay for illegal funding to the Nicaraguan Contras. This scheme was also responsible for the explosion of crack cocaine in American inner city neighborhoods. Reagan most famously took on the Soviet Union, but his policies actually had nothing to do with the fall of that government. Reagan was responsible for huge increases in government spending, especially on the military-industrial complex. The boondoggle "Star Wars" was initiated by Reagan.

Reagan ranks as one of the worst presidents ever, along with Grant and Harding.

He ruined air traffic control, civil rights, air safety (which we would pay for later), retirement, armed services compensation, customs, immigration, and banking. What a great record.

Except for the introduction of crack (I feel he wasn't directly involved in it, anyhow), I mostly agree with those policies. We needed to defeat the Soviets in any way. Most importantly, we needed to get them out of our backyard. Iran Contra may have been misguided, but it did get the job done.
As for the labor unions, I'm glad he fired the air traffic controllers, though I don't feel that he made an all-out assault on labor unions. And I was under the impression he was a liberal as the president of the SAG.

Astounding.

Tactlessness and ignorance of several posters aside, I'll simply add that I was saddened when I heard the news, but not particularly surprized. He'd been ill for quite some time, and aparently didn't even recognize his family anymore.

RIP Mr. President.

:::Raises hand:::

And, those who are re-starting the "Reagan was the worst/greatest war" please stop.

Reagan joins the ranks of the likes of George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, Franklin Deleanor Roosevelt and Dwight Eisenhower, and John F. Kennedy as one the best Presidents the US has ever had and one of the greatest leaders in world history.

While I personally held no affection whatever for Mr. Reagan as a President and (based on what I know of him) not too much for him as a man, it's still sad that by the end he could not even recognise his own wife. What a way to die.

Personally, i think he was one of the worst. Fighter against cencorship? PLEASE. He pushed the FCC like gap pushes jeans. However, i'm not too immature to admit there were a few good things about him, and i'm not too jaded to see past politics into a human life. I am quite left winged, but nonetheless, hats off; Some Reagan accomplishments on the positive side:

Average real family income grew by well over 15% from 1982 to 1989

For the poorest fifth of Americans, real income grew almost 12%

Families earning more than $50,000 (in 1990 dollars) went from less than 25% of families in Carter's 1980 to 31% in 1990

Percentage of families earning less than $15,000 dropped

Of those who were in the bottom-fifth income bracket in 1979, 65% jumped at least two income brackets during the 80s (in fact, more made it all the way to the top than stayed in the poorest group)

Families with incomes between $10,000 and $50,000 per year experienced a higher percentage of growth in net worth than those in the top one-fifth

Between 1983 and 1989, the total population under the poverty line decreased by 3.8 million people, with an unprecedented number of poor entering the work force.

The US experienced sustained economic growth without inflation, low unemployment, and low interest rates. Also, some 20 million jobs were created, 82% of which were higher-skilled, higher-paying occupations

Federal spending on the poor for income, food, health care, housing, education, training, and social services increased

All income groups from the poorest to the richest experienced real income gains. (Compare that to the Carter years when only the income of the top 1% grew. In fact, the share of income gains going to the top 1% of families was 160% higher under Carter than under Reagan)

Between 1982 and 1898, real after-tax income per person rose by 15.5 percent

I respect Ronald Reagan for the wrong reasons. He was able to win election through celebrity status, claim credit for his predecessor's greatest success, put the nation trillions of dollars into debt, and still win reelection. Hell yes, anyone who can do all that is worthy of my respect. I still think he was a bastard, but that's up to the individual.
