Celebrate Reagan's accomplishments

Talking about death is so morbid. I think we should celebrate Reagan's life. I'd like to celebrate the fact that through his misfortune he brought more Republicans into the fold on stem cell research than anyone else before him. I'd like to celebrate a genuis three word solution to a complex problem like drug control: Just Say No. I'd like to celebrate the accomplishment of making the rich richer and the poor poorer through trickle down economics (a theory so sophisticated that it was probably devised on the back of a napkin at the Skull & Bones white CEO's and stockholder's lobster dinner). I'd like to celebrate his work in bringing the truest form "power to the people" by training contras in central america.

Feel free to add your own.

- Selling Weapons to Death Squads in El Salvador
- Campaigning in 1980 with "We'll get government out of your lives" and then Pushing the FCC Like a Drug to censor Radio, Television and magazines very strongly
- "We'll get government out of your lives." But uterus' are okay? Lives, but not uterus'? Strong anti-abortion advocate he was.

You know, I am one of those who like Reagan - but hated his presidency.

This man is now being treated as a god. Death will do that sometimes.

But I remember his doubling the national debt. His economic policies being a causative reason for the nasty recession in '82. His arming and training of the Mujahadeen - and then his abandining them after they expelled the Russians from Afghanistan. One must wonder how much this abandonment led to the rise of the Taliban and Osama.

I remember his tough talk, but then his running from Lebannon. I remember his duplicitous arming of BOTH sides of the Iran-Iraq war. the Iran-Contra affair. And the fact that it was under his direction that exports of WMD to Saddam occured.

I remember the number of officials in his administration convicted of bribery, corruption, and influence peddling. And those that resigned to avoid charges.

I remember his decision that the way to rid the country of illegal drugs was to cut funding to treatment programs, and to increase jail sentances instead.

But then again - I enjoyed his firing of the Air Traffic controlers. And I remember him getting caught during a microphone test saying ""My fellow Americans, I am pleased to tell you today that I have signed legislation that will outlaw Russia forever. We begin bombing in five minutes." That was hilarious. - so it wasn't ALL bad.

But truly you DID have to respect the guy. And I think most really felt that he personally was a honest man. A decent man. A good man.

But far from the best President in Us history. VERY far from the best.

I'll give him what you gave him Spoffin.

But I'll also remind people of what he taught us as Americans.

He taught us it was okay to trade arms for hostages as long as you covered it up and ran a shadow government that gave you plausible deniability.

He taught us it was okay to consider AIDS a judgment from God on the dirty homosexuals.

He taught us that deficits don't matter.

He taught us that, despite what simple mathematics says, it's possible to increase revenues by decreasing revenues.

He taught us that Jesus loves Republicans and only Republicans.

I'm sure I'll remember more of what he taught us as the day wears on, but that's enough to start with.

Umm the Russians pulled out of Afghanistan after Reagan left office, in 1989, and after the Soviet block broke up; things happened. Cold War politics was very different from anything today, you had both sides arming other countries to avoid coming to conflict against each other, since it would result in a devastating world war. And I doubt Canada would have been spared from a Soviet attack, being part of NATO and all.

Despite his bumbling and mumbling he wasn't as stupid as people make out. I'll say here what I've said on another thread. I wouldn't wish his slow, painful and malicious death on anyone. He did at least have one excellent attribute that Bush very much lacks, a sense of humour and I believe that went a long way in his international dealings. He would never have put the US in the detested position it is in now. RIP

Apologies: but it is kind of hard following 5+ simultaneous near identical threads like this one, and every now and again something just slips under the radar.

Is there anyone who like Reagan? After all every pres. reaps the blame or fame of the pres. before him. Carter had our economy in a tale spin when Reagan took office, he reaped the blame. Just as Clinton reaped the fame for the economy after Reagan and Bush 1 got it up and running. He had his faults but he made Americans feel like Americans again. His accomplishments far out way his faults...

Clinton and Bush Sr were both jerks. Every recent president has been a member in a bizzare fraternal cult called "bohemian grove" they basically run the world beind the scenes. Every president except Kennedy has been a Mason. But the masons only turned bad around the 1920s-1930s.

I think we need to smash these secret socities that have taken root in our supposedly free land. But we haven't been free in probably 30 years.

His accomplishments far out way his faults...Like him? I wouldn't go that far. He's certainly not the worst President of the last 50 years--far from it--but he doesn't deserve the beatification that he'll get over the coming weeks.

Like most presidents, he did some good, and he did some bad. He deserves a lot of credit for just lifting the spirits of the country in general, post-Carter (another good man who was a victim of circumstance more than anything). He deserves credit for recognizing that Gorbachev wasn't just another apparatchik and seeing that we could work with him. He deserves credit for getting interest rates to drop and for slowing the rate of inflation--his "cure" may have done more long term harm than good, but it got results in the short term and that mattered at the time.

I've already listed my issues with the guy in an above post, so I won't reiterate them here, but if there's one thing that I'll never forgive him for it's this: if he hadn't chosen Poppy Bush as his VP, we'd never have had either of the Bush presidencies.

The three worst presidents ever were in this order.
Lyndon "Special rights" Johnson.
Franklin "President for life" Roosevelt.
Bill "Blow Job" Clinton.

If you go up to the 5th worst presidents

George "Duh Ba U" Bush.

John "Veneral Disease" Kennedy.

Go up to 7th worst.

Ronald "Trees pollute" Reagan

George "New World Order and No New Taxes" Bush.
