Tiamat (Leviathan)
Technically, Tiamat was a goddess who warred with the other Sumerian/Akkadian gods before the creation of the world.

Kingu
Tiamat's general, leader of the demons.

Nergal
God of the underworld, pestilence, mass destruction. Was evicted from heaven and laid seige to the underworld with 14 demons until Ereshkigal consented to marry him.

Ereshkigal
Goddess of the underworld, death. Consort of Nergal.

I think Astarte was an Ancient Jewish god.

You must mean Yaweh. But in the DaVinci Code they talk about the possibllity of Yaweh having a female counterpart known as Shekinah

Im not sure If Astarte was one god along with Yahweh amound others that were worshipped, or if Yahweh and Astarte arfe one and the same.
I'm pretty sure its the first too.

I thought Astarte was just the Hebrew name for the Babylonian goddess Ishtar.

::EDIT:: I just found this http://www.infidels.org/library/modern/james_still/astarte.html which shows I was wrong.

Yahweh or Yahwe is really spelt YHWH. He was supposed to live on Mount Sinai and is the God of War (like Mars).

I think Astarte was an Ancient Jewish god. Caananite not Jewish and definetely female. May have been related to Ishtar (questionable - probable parallel development, but without a time machine . . .), but personified the same aspects (particularily the sex). Is usually considered to be the basis for Tanit (chief Goddess of Carthage) and is sometimes known as Baalat, which indicates her close association (marriage in some sources) with Baal. The Caanaite culture became the culture of the Phonecians, not the Jews. Astarte is probably the basis for Ashtoreth, persecuted by King Solomon of the Jews but this is no means certain.

I thought the the Incubus was the male counter-part of the Succumbi (sp?) a demon who would seduce men in their dreams and steal their 'seed' (iirc this was an early interpretation of wet dreams).

I don't doubt you but I have never read her.

Basically, she thought that capitalism should be completely unrestrained and that the rich deserved their wealth and were superior to the average person, who she called "second hand".

I think Astarte was an Ancient Jewish god.

You must mean Yaweh. But in the DaVinci Code they talk about the possibllity of Yaweh having a female counterpart known as Shekinah

Astarte, a.k.a. Ashtoreth, was a Canaanite goddess that many Israelites worshipped during the years of apostacy that inspired the anger found in so many of the prophetic books, along with Baal and Chemosh (Moloch) et al.

The Jews per se, unless disregarding their stated faith, have only worshipped Yhwh. "Jew" is a Babylonian corruption of "Judean", which was both a tribe of Hebrews and one of the two Hebrew nations extant at that time. Eventually the word came to refer to all Hebrews, as the ten "lost tribes" of the nation of Israel eventually lost their seperate identities as Babylonian slaves.

The first Hebrews were the family of Abram/Abraham who followed his father Terah in an exodus from Yr, a Chaldean city of the Sumarian empire. Terah had been a professional idol maker in Ur and this, prior to Abram's revelation from Yhwh the family worshipped many gods and godesses, as all Sumarians did.

Solomon wrote of Sophia, or Wisdom, as a woman, and thus she could be seen as a female counterpart to Yhwh. However Sophia was never worshipped, except perhaps during the time when Solomon fell into the apostacy of worshipping "strange gods". Shikana is more accurately refered to as the Shikana Glory, the halo that eminated from the Arc of the Covenent. If this was ever worshipped it was either as the presence of Yhwh or as a holdover of pagan beliefs, either from their Sumarian roots or from their time as Egyptian slaves.

To the extent that the ancient Israelites worshipped anyone or anything aside from Yhwh, they were breaking His laws and synchrotizing Judaism with the faiths of neighbouring peoples. To call them Jews is equivalent to calling Santarians Catholic.

Incubi and succubi both seduce mortals and succubi definitely steal the breath of children, so it would not surprise me if incubi do too. Basically they are the children of Lilith, who hates families due to her messy divorce from Adam. So the cause adulterous dreams and SIDS.

The worship of the brazen speaking head Baphomet was one of the charges of heresy raised against the Knights Templar.

Baphomet/Behemoth (also the King of Good Dragons to us AD&D nerds) was one half of a primordial Chaos god that was split in two by Enkil or Marduck in the great celestial war that took place at the foundation of the world. The other half was Tiamat/Laviathan.

In the Book of Enoch (I or II, I cannot recall for sure) it is said that God seperated the Behemoth from the Laviathan for food. Does this mean that they were to be eaten, or does this mean that the precedent creature was eating everything and causing famine? Behemoth is another name for the Nile Hippopotomus and Laviathan is another name for the whale ... which kind I am not sure, if it was specific at all... and it's doubtful, as a side note, that many pre-Phoenecian people had any idea what a whale was. But now we know that both the hippo (mastadon, etc.) and the whale (porpoise, etc.) evolved from a lineage of previously extant land dwelling mammels that included the brachiatherm, a great camelesque beast that ate whole trees and consequently did not last long upon the evolutionary stage. Evolutionary law caused that great beast to be "seperated for food".

Just rambling... carry on.

How about Malbolgia? This is for those of you familiar with "Spawn."

Origins in The Divine Comedy, unless I am very much mistaken.

Is that the Malebolge (or Malbowges as I have sometimes seen it written)? That was a region of Hell rather than a demon wasn't it. Although it does offer up a new range of possibilities (Dis, Caïna, Antenora etc.)

And of course the dreaded Moogle Mog

What in Hell??!

And just as a point of reference I read somewhere that demons are typically any super natural beings below the level of a god. So any mythic creature could be classified as being a demon. Minotaur,

They don’t need to be malevolent but they do need to be supernatural. Which I have always interpreted as coming from another plane of existence. My definition (which I am not saying is right), would mean that the Minotaur would not be a demon, as bizarre as it is it is terrestrial, although depending on what you think fairies are, are demons.

I don't think you really want to go this route for a couple of reasons:

1. Everybody else has pretty much done it to death.

2. Think about which would have a greater negative effect on enemy morale -

"Admiral, we have lost two of our escorts and a destroyer to the Battlecruiser SS Bloodsplitter. Intelligence reports tell us that during the conflict the enemy was blasting out satanic hymns through loudspeakers and when they boarded one of our vessels their marines were described as being dressed in spiked black leather uniforms. Our captains were taken prisoner and executed and at this very moment their heads stick upon spikes at the prow of the enemy vessel."

-or-

"Admiral, we have lost two of our escorts and a destroyer to the Battlecruiser SS Laughing Child Folding Paper Cranes Amongst The Falling Cherry Blossoms. Intelligence reports tells us that during the conflict the enemy were playing selections from the light operatic works of Gilbert and Sullivan, and when they boarded our vessels their marines were described as being dressed in Pierrot costumes. Our captains were taken prisoner and executed and then Punch and Judy shows were performed with their severed heads in front of other captives."

Which one of the above sound like a hard-as-feck bunch of bastids that really don't care if they live or die? Those pretending it is Halloween or those pretending it is Summer Season at the pier?

I still say Ayn Rand is a good name for a demonic ship.
