Can you imagine that it was fifteen years ago... That the Chinese government sent tanks into Tiananmen square and set off a massacre? I'm very surprised no one here has harped on about it yet... Anyway... Just thought I'd remind you folks of the importance of the anniversary...

Now this is courage in the face of tyranny and the unending desire of people to be free....Would that the People's Republic of China truly be a "republic of the people"

Anyone know what really happened to that guy, besides the usual urban legends?

I remember reading in General about the fate of this guy, but that thread is long gone...

But I remember it, fifteen years ago seeing that particular guy dancing in front and the tank trying to move past with the world's media watching...

Fifteen years ago...

Cheers for the link Goa Uld.

Imagine sending tanks in to break up a set of students, its not as if they were an army :x . And at least 700 people died (I saw 3000 on one website, but I doubt it).

CHINA ROCKS!

Don't get me wrong, I love my country, but I may not like certain actions by the government.

80,000 people gathered in Victoria Park in Hong Kong to mourn for the massacre. As long as they keep doing it, Beijing is bow in apology one day. The new leaders know it, it's just the old and decaying members of the central government that are stubborn and hard-headed. Now that Chinese tourists are flooding the city, more and more of the Chinese public are exposed to the real atrocities that happened in Tiananmen Square. It's helping the democratisation of China, really.

LOVE LIVE CHINA!

BUT LOVE LIVE MORE FOR JUSTICE! :D :D :D :D

Ahhh...if only we could do that here. Those damn teachers' strikes are a pain in the ass!

And as for those anti-Iraq protestors...

It would be cool to see China as a democracy. It would be the largest, most complex republic in the history of the world!

...and one of the oldest civilizations in history, to boot.

May Gods grace and guidance lead The Middle Kingdom to such a better future.

...and may He shelter those who died in the palm of His hand. Amen.

I support Australia. The fact that I believe Howard does a good job is quite irrelevent here.

My original post was a joke (with a little truth). Why do you have to be so political all the time?

Nah, it was a joke. It'd only be a whinge in the off chance that John Costello wins the election.

Long live the People's Liberation Army! * splat... splat... *

...But I do recommend for anyone who's interested to see "The Gates of Heavenly Peace" (1995) -- a documentary on the subject of the thread (oh, there goes another pun  )

Hey, I love China. I love it's culture, it's history and it's people. But I must admit I hate the Chinese Communist Party. Actually they aren't even communist. I'd call them facist. I really think that China should free Taiwan and Tibet. I think that it's people should live freely without oppresive laws. Now I gotta run... There's a tank outside my door...

Hopefully once the old farts currently in charge finally decide to take the dirt nap, the situation over there will improve....

While criticising some of Beijing's actions, I wish to stress that I'm still a nationalist, i.e.: Tibet and Taiwan belong to China. So does Mongolia, actually, and the Spratlys and Pescadores and Diaoyu Islands all belong to China. Now push off, separatists.
