Hey World! How Does YOUR Country Fare If USA Is Republican?
Garaj Mahal

Living right next door to the USA, we in Canada often feel a distinct chill in the relationship with our beloved cousins to the south when they go and elect a Republican administration.
Canada is the largest trading-partner the USA has, but Republicans seem to habitually forget that more easily than Democrats do. In decades past we had our squabbles with Democrat administrations too, but ever since Nixon it's nearly always under Republicans that Canada gets the shabbiest treatment.
I'd be happy to mention a few examples should anyone be curious, but first, lets hear opinions on this from NS folks in various parts of the world.
Also, I wonder this: When choosing a President, are Americans obliged to consider what the rest of the world might prefer rather than ONLY their own domestic populace? I think they are. Whomever is elected President of the U.S. affects everybody, so it's a more serious decision than merely a domestic one.
I mean no offence, but when a Republican government is elected it seems to send a loud message of "fuck you" to the rest of the planet. I'm *not* saying that's what Americans intend, but I honestly feel that's what much of the rest of the world hears.
All I'd ask is that the American people - who really *are* mostly good hearted and intelligent people - think of the rest of us during their next presidential election.
woah, like, double topic.

Not to be hostile, but...
When you elect your Prime Minister (or pick the party that picks the PM, I forget how it works at this hour) do you consider what Americans might think?
For that matter, does any country consider what America (or any other nation) thinks, or do they primarily focus on their own internal best interests?
I'm pretty sure that most people are voting based on domestic concerns over what other countries might think. And I don't really see anything wrong with that. I'm voting for the President of the USA; not Canada. Like most people, my primary concern is what will directly affect me, not other countries.
And pretty much anybody who's honest will say the same thing. It's not egoism or Ameri-centrism, it's human nature.

Sorry if it's unclear to you, but it's not meant for Americans anyway, The rest of the world will understand as it's very straightforward.

Hmm...okay, I get it now. I read it as "It'll be better for the US if the US is Democratic/Republican"....

So what you're saying is that if we cut off all of the oil we supply the US, nothing would happen? Oh, by the way, what happened to your democracy? It was pretty good around pre-Bush era.

Your assets? Last time I checked, Canadian oil didn't belong to the US. And if you decide to invade Canada, I think the whole world would have something to say about that. Oh wait, nevermind, Bush would just go ahead and do it anyway.

Do all Americans act this way or is it just this one?
Well, I'm certainly all for some good, wholesome War of 1812 reenactment!
That said, and bearing in mind the fact that I am no military scholar, I am under the impression that it has, for the most part, simply faded away from disuse. Most of the soldiers are under the U.N. as peacekeepers, or off in Bosnia digging up mines, or in Afghanistan being shot by Americans, or other such things. We had some pretty wicked-cool stuff back in the '50s, like the Avro Arrow, which could outperform pretty well anything that was on the market already and could even bring down the coveted U2, but that was cancelled for mysteeeerious reasons, and we went under the U.S. defence umbrella shortly after. Rather odd, that.

i have to aggree with garaj mahal (there's a cool band by that name btw)
if the u.s. doesn't want to be responsible to the rest of the world it shouldn't be trying to be world dictator.
in mundane life i live in the u.s. but in my heart carlemnaria (and the world of lananara) is more "my country" then the u.s. ever has been or ever likely will be, even if both exist only on the net and in my head.
in carlemnaria we define evil as to knowingly cause avoidable harm, and even the lananaran interplanetary federation or the galactic u.n. of which it is a member, has yet to witness any force more harmful or destructive then the aggressiveness of gratuitous conventionality, not that neo-cons are in any ration sense of the word conservative of anything. and please not that i said gratuitious, as not all conventionalities are, and there's nothing wrong with shairing your ancestors defaults in the abscence of more pressing direct and immediate considerations, the problem comes in substituting the one for the other when there are!
