What if...then what?

What is one thing you would change is you could?
That said what are the consequences of said change?
Is it all worth it or have you made a mess of things?

I'll start off:

Before the Europeans ever began to explore the rest of the world the rate of birth is lower by half. Thus they are not sqeezed for land for many years. This allowed them to be less agressive, and not as desperate for conquering others. This means they did not cause as much damage to the other peoples of the world during the Age of Discovery. So then the rest of the world was able to maintain nearly an equal step with the people of Europe.

Get the idea? Yeah? Good here is a topic to get you started.

Christianity never became more than a small grassroots cult.

We'd all go to hell, and when the Roman Empire fell, Europe would be in a perpetual state of soulessness and anarchy. Now, I have one.
What if the Arabs won the Battle of Poitiers?

The one thing I would of changed would of been people believing in religion, the result would of probably been the increase study and use of science and more intellectual people. Probably fewer wars as well. This would of been a good thing for humankind..

The Roman Empire might not have fallen so quickly had it not been for Christianity.

Yeah, but the Abbassids would get jealous of the Umayyad's conquests. They'd try to launch some form of an effort to conquer them. After all, it wasn't long before that the Abbasids seized power.
Here's another one. Suppose the entire US was an uninhabitable desert, where no more than a few thousand people could support themselves until modern times. What would happen in the world?

I think that if the U.S. was an uninhabited wasteland, then we would all be either Communist or dead.

What if the Axis had won WWII?

The US would still exist, but just barely. It'd always be militarily and industrially inferior to Japan and Germany, moreso Japan.
Germany would begin a worldwide extermination of all non-Germans, excluding Japanese but including Italians (who Hitler was gonna get rid of after the war). He'd have all of Europe, a big chunk of Russia, most of Africa, and most of the Middle East.
Japan's "Greater East Asia co-prosperity sphere" would be complete, turning the Chinese into slaves, and having the raw resources needed for an empire. It'd also have Australia, India, some of Siberia, and quite a bit of Central Asia.
Eventually, the two would be sick of eachother, and go to war. The US, sick of the two of them and powerless to do anything, would just watch. However, the US economy would stop growing by the sixties because there was no more oil left, and coal was being used rapidly.

We never made the transition from anarchistic hunter-gatherers to civilization.

No state, no capitalism, no transhumanists, sounds good, though computers are hard to live with out.

. . .we'd all be killing each other just because we could get away with it.

What if George W. Bush had been president during the Cold War?

Not unless your goal in life was to have six kids before you died, which would be at twenty.

What if the Aztecs had never been conquered, and had flourished until now?

Theoretically for the Aztecs to flourish they would have to be isolated and would thus fall victim to all the deadly dieses that we harbor. The remaining population would then be assimilated into the current capitalistic society through the need for “proper” housing, food, healthcare, education ect.

I'd change the NS server. This would increase both the number of poster and the posting rate. Not to mention how it would make this world a much better place as the number of greatly frustrated NS posters, frustrated thanks to a server who does indeed deserve capital punishment, would be reduced to zero.

Id go with what Stephistan said and get rid of religion all together. That world would be a much nicer one.

I'd make water just a little bit thicker. You know, give it some body. The fish would get a better workout, and be meatier. Baths would be more fun. It'd be easier to measure.

Maybe water could be whipped into a gel along rocky coastlines. :D

The hideous effects that this would have on human biology would just be a minor side effect?

I'd make the possession of two X chormozones needed for pyschic abilities. Which means that women and some males would be pyschic maybe, but most guys wouldn't even have the chance. Yes!
Oh and by the way if the right hemisphere of the brain was dominate instead of the left than there would be no humanity because it would be so self-destructive.
