I might find that to be clever if I had any idea what the basis for it is.

Coz they believe it's something they must endeavour to change. :)

no its the democrats who believe its a democracy but yeah alot of republicans do to. which is funny because we are not a full democracy truthfully we're a republic. Of course when both parties try to block third parties they are not in support of democracy

Technically, America is a republic with democratic principles. That doesn't necessarily mean "majority rules", but it can mean "life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness".

Want to know what i fail to understand? How someone who is 19 years old and well educated could possibly be so conservative. I also fail to understand why African-Americans would ever want to participate in Bush's government. Condi must cry herself to sleep every night.

that was a good one. Except both parties are taking away liberty and many liberals believe you should be guranteed by the government your happiness its just pursuit of it!
well to an extent the majority does rule the majority have to be listened to by those who represent them although the minority (gays for instance on the marriage issue) should not be oppressed by the majority for instance. Also the republic is now dead honestly. Look at how large the government is in size! Look at our foreign policies and other ones as well. A study I recently read showed most liberals believe we are a democracy while most conservatives believe we are a republic. The majority can be oppressive on both the liberal and conservative side either way its usaully a bad thing
Democrats try to push for a more "true" democracy while republicans want to make it a little more right wing.

Why do Republicans believe America is a Democracy, while Democrats believe America is a Republic? :)
Because both are some what true.. The United States is a Republic based on democtatic principles. Yet, first and fore most are suppose to be a country based on principle of law...

I've always thought we were a constitutional democratic-republic because the US isn't a complete democracy or complete republic. We're a mix of the two with a constitution.

I believe America is a republic, and I'm a Republican. And I hope it stays a republic.
Republic: A political order whose head of state is not a monarch and in modern times is usually a president.
Democracy: Government by the people, exercised either directly or through elected representatives.

Majority doesn't always rule however, and therein lies the issue. If it did, more problems would come about because you would only need to campaign in 5 states or something (so I hear).
And yes I understand it was one of those 'Why is it if you take something by car its a shipment, but when you take something by boat its cargo?' sort of things.

*ahem* "...and to the republic, for which it stands..."
Remember that little thing most Americans did every day in school? The pledge? Yeah. The pledge agrees with the Dems on this one.
Also, not to bring up old wounds or anything; but that whole 2000 election would've made most Dems in favor of a direct-vote system I'd wager. Food for thought.
