What era would you choose to live in?

Imagine that you have the timemachine (HG. Wells thing) and can go anywhere...

Early Roman empire?
Middle ages (and at 30 from appendix after a life in a cold castle :? )
Pre civilasation period?
19th century?
Za future (the year 5000?)

I think I would like to see Europe in the time of Roman emperor August in the 1st century. The pax Romana is there and most wars are fought at the bounderies of the empire. Agruculture production is high and Europe was still covered almost completely with the original forrests.

I would also jump to the Americas to watch the pre colombian society there.

What would you take with you?
I thinkI would take some modern weapons with me, in case that August is not friendly at me, I would give them a warning shot with a machine gun, that 'll teach them and they would see me as a god. I am a peacefull men, but when you go back in time, I think it would be safe to have some stuf like that with you. Imagine yourself walking in blue jeans in that society. Imagine what they will think when they see that your pants have pockets (pockets where only invented after the middleages...)

I would like to go back to pre-Imperial/Republican Rome around a century before Ceasar(or rather, Augustus) crosses the Rubicon. The reason I say this is because it was generally peaceful at that time although Rome was nearing a civil war. Maybe I could meet Cicero there and I could get there just in time to see Scipio the Younger in action.

Life would have been a bit different from today but it was simple. All I'll need are some history books, a survival handbook and maybe a truckload of MRE's(it could be awhile before I could settle in). Oh, I could also need a gun. A Beretta 92F will fit in the place(albeit anachronistically, lol).

You are wright, first pf all some good history books are needed.
BTW, what are MRE'S (My mothertongue is not English)? I guess weapons.

Meals Ready-to-Eat(MRE), rations issued to troops while in the field. Has an indefinite shelf life, durable, provides a balanced diet, and flameless heating for the food. A very useful item provided one can get their hands on one of them.

Yeh I know them, i use them on climbing expeditions (Reiter, Lyofal aso). But taste of most is monotone, specially when you eat them a complete week.

Renaissance Italy! That would be amazing.
Or... in Rome at the height of their golden age...
Or... in Feudal Japan...
Or... in early 20th century Canada...
or... in Germany in the 1930s.... it would be interesting to see history happen...

I probably wouldn't live long to see history happen. Pretty sure after I put 2 .45 rounds in Hilter's head and then shoot 5 more of his thugs, his brownshirts would pretty much beat me down and kill me. But it would be worth it.

But, I would want to because I've always wanted to understand how such people come into power and why people can be so tolerant for so long...

Early Roman Empire....the Indian nation known as Cahokia, a fairly advanced culture that arose in present-day Illinois around the 7th century A.D. at one point their capital city measured 6 sq miles. Quartered neighborhoods with wide plazas and with agricultural fields along it's city limts

Precivilisation. I want to see what the world was like before the Agricultural Revolution.
The Roman Empire around its height.
Roman Britain. I've always been interested in Roman Britain. I like the place names and how they evolved over time.
The Renaissance: Fascinating.
The 18th century. One of my favourite eras as many advances in the sciences, humanities were made during that time. I'd also like to see the American and French Revolutions.

Was it ever a true city? Did it control much outside of its city walls a few nearby villages? I'm not doubting its greatness. I'm doubting whether it's justly glorified on this thread. Otherwise, it'd be in all the history books, being as great as the Mayans and Aztecs.

i want to see the human race move to the next phase

I want to see advancment but not so much as to be incomprehensible...
like going 5,000 yrs into the future would be stupid because you wouldnt understand it.
so i guess time travel is like fine wine...you have to know what your drinking in order to fully appreciate it.

I would go there and (hopefully) see the human expansion into the solar system and the terraformation of Mars and Venus as well as the intro of wide-spread gene therapy to increase lifespans to 150+yrs

no not at all. The Tech exsists right now for the early stages of colinization. and with the huge areospace industry in the US of A doing nothing but bidding on jets that the USAF do'snt need, the time is very ripe. the power of the industry has to be harnesed before it falls into decadence and decline.

they were the hub of a trade network that extended from around lake superior to the gulf of mexico, and from the rockies to the appalachians - as evidenced by the copper artifacts and sea shells and mica found there. it had a peak population of around 20,000. it had monumental architecture. and according to bill gartner (the guy who taught my archeaology class) a dig he did fairly conclusively showed that they ruled over a large number of other population centers - something about some items they found associated with a ruler's burial mound that i don't quite remember. it hasn't made it into basic texts yet, but neither has catal huyuk.

America during the War of 1812, just to kill a few Brits at D.C. to attempt to save the White House SO NO MORE CANADIANS CAN TAKE THE BLAME AND WE CAN PUT THE DAMN THING TO REST.

I'd take some modern weapons with me of course. A machine gun is handy when you face a couple thousand troops.

Pre-Columbian North American era for me, personally. Yes, I'm one of those history-fan, primitive technology guys. I can make everything from simple spears, to atlatls and primitive bow and arrow systems. Besides, I love being outdoors, and I feel too out of place in this society; and there was so much more to explore and make of yourself in those days. People always used to tell me I was born a few hundred years too late...
